T-Mobile 3G launches on October 1st, officially…kind of
This one has been rumored for quite a while, but if a small piece of paper taped to the window if a T-Mobile store is to be believed, we now have semi-official confirmation that the carrier will be flipping the switch on its 3G network on October 1st. The high-speed data network should go live in 27 of T-Mobile’s most populated markets, which is good news for anyone that’s growing a bit tired of their lowly EDGE connection (read: everyone). The carrier has been testing its 3G network in New York over the last several months, though we’re not aware of any similar tests in any other markets. Whatever the case, lets hope that they pull this off in conjunction with the release of some hot new handsets, as their current crop of 3G-capable phones is, well, awful.

Ill believe it when I see the 3G pigs flying around Chitown.

Any word on the tariff for this? Will I be able to hop on with my existing $20/month unlimited plan which includes tethering?!?!

Currently atless in the new york market there is no extra cost for using 3g vs edge as modem. Now who’s to say that this will never change.
Its make sence that 3g will be release in the 4th quater. Since the android based google phone is still on schedule to be released later this year.

A whole 27 cities?! The coverage map still looks like a bald man’s head with a few stray hairs here or there. Pathetic. So who is going to be first and try it on their smartphone? Oh, wait. Nobody. Because there aren’t any AWS-enabled smart phones.

this is useless to me until a 3g sk comes out lol

I can see the marketing meeting. Ok we can go with a national campaign with TV / Newspaper / Radio spots or we can go with a piece of paper with blue painters tape. Ok guys get the copier fired up.
Just sad.

it was a sign for a employee meeting not for national advertising, just happens somebody snapped a shot of it and sent it in to tmonews.com

based on my conversations with a tmo rep last week, seems like bold will be available on tmobile.
when i asked about any new smartphones coming soon, i was told “they will but after 3g coz there’s no point in introducing a new smartphone now, like bold with 3g, when 3g hasn’t been launched yet”.

@ BGR,
“…their current crop of 3G-capable phones is, well, awful.”
Awful is quite an understatement. =]
As much as I love T-Mobile and will never give up on it, it needs to step up. Just a bit.
@ Galvatron,
Dude, you had such good spelling that time I didn’t even know it was you! I had to read MrFingers’ post to find out it was you!
Sorry, but it’s true. Mean, but true.

What’s so great about 3G anyway? Folks who are using it on AT&T and their iPhone 3G can only surf that web for like 2 hours before having to recharge. Such a shame, really.
T-Mobile reps are hinting at a Bold release sometime this year. I wonder if AT&T screwed up its exclusivity by delaying their release, thus coinciding with the subsequent North American market releases.

Speaking of firsts…
1) Galvatron with a meaningful, relevant, & coherent post.
2) Galvatron and Dtest54 did not kill each other.
Thems 3G pigs might actually be flying.
