iPhone 2.1 Firmware May Reveal New iPod Touch in the Works

According to a recent find, the latest beta firmware release for the iPhone may reveal a new iPod Touch in the works, presumably nearing completion. Deduced from an extremely brief text string found by someone with entirely too much time on his or her hands, a new iPod Touch would make sense in light of the fact that Apple is currently doing everything it can to unload the current model. According to reports, Apple had been denoting the current iPod Touch model with “iPod 1,1″ while the iPhone had previously been referred to as “iPhone 1,1″. In the current firmware references to the current iPhone are shown as “iPhone 1,2″, illustrating the minor internal differentiation between iPhone and iPhone 3G. The iPod Touch on the other hand is denoted as “iPod 2,1″ which may in fact indicate that a rather major overhaul is in the works. Perhaps Apple will attempt to mix up the pot a bit by building a new iPod Touch that is more than merely an iPhone minus the phone. As we near September 15th, the date that the current free iPod Touch offer will come to an end, the timing might be just right for something new to come our way.

UPDATE: While there are probably updated iPod Touchs coming soon, one of our Apple informants hit us up to let us know the following: “There have been references to iPod2,1 since the first firmware 2.0 beta. In the lockdownd file there is a method to check if the device is A) an iPod Touch 2 (iPod2,1), or B) an iPhone 3G (iPhone1,2), so they aren’t new. The guy that keeps ‘discovering’ this stuff is a n00b, most have been around since the 2.0 betas.”

    Verizon Guy says:

Hey Kiddies! Are y’all in the mood for a totally brand-new, completely unsubstantiated rumor!!?? OK!!

So it goes like this. Apple tv is dead. iPod touch with flash memory will stick around, but it will get a “bigger brother”. This new device will also be a replacement for Apple tv. Basically, we’re talking about an iPod touch with a slightly larger case and 160gb hard drive on board. However, the chips inside are a little different, as this one supports HD video, 5.1 surround sound and HDMI out.

Why would Apple add this capability? Well, there will be a dock option for this iPod. This dock will have HDMI and SPDIF out, for connecting to your TV/AV system. It will have ethernet and Firewire ports (more on that later). It will also have it’s own brand-new Apple remote, with accelerometer and multitouch (no display, just a touchpad like on the Macbook). So basically, you dock your iPod, and you can watch videos (native HD or upconverted to 1080p) on your TV.

But wait, there’s more! You slide your finger over the remote touchpad, and you get an on-screen cursor. This is helpful when browsing Coverflow, iTunes Store, etc. You can even play your favorite AppStore games on the bigscreen, using the touchpad and accelerometer on the remote.

Why ethernet and Firewire? Well, because Apple is working with STB makers (Motorola, Tivo) to allow you to sync content recorded on your DVR to your new iPod touch, so you can take it with you! You can also hook up a camcorder and transfer videos to your new iPod without a computer. Yeah, ok, wishful thinking, but it could happen.

So to sum it all up, Apple wants to create an iPod touch that bridges the gap between content on the TV and content on the mobile screen. With something like this, Apple tv becomes unnecessary and obsolete. Furthermore, it allows Apple to dip their toes into the fiercely competitive gaming console market without creating a new console.

    AJ says:

This is literally what I want. I want an iPod Touch with 3G data capabilities. I already have a perfectly good Blackberry that handles e-mails amd texts WORLDS better than an iPhone. I want the iPod with the best mobile web experience going. Give me a 32 GB iPod Touch 3G and I’ll gladly pay $40 per month for the data service.

    me not you says:

most likely they wont mix 3g services with the touch. if you really want the 3g, just get an iphone 3G, the money that you save can pay for the service plan.
the most i think they will update the touch is just to change the back to a plastic just like the iphone, lower the price, and possibly add gps.
apple really wants to make the iphone and ipod touch two distintly seperate devices, and by adding 3g to the touch, who needs it?

    N3VURMYND says:

    I don’t need it, I want it!

What makes the iPhone so special are the things that come with the Phone. It’s what’s driving all these people Crazy! Not the fact that it’s a “Phone”.

Imagine, all the capabilities from the iPhone 3G minus the “phone”, added to the iPod Touch. I would gladly pay 35-40 Dollars a month for data. I just don’t want at&t’s voice services and I think, almost Half the people who own an iPhone would agree.

Which is why I don’t think such a thing would exist so I guess it’s just Wishful Thinking. Would be nice though no?
