The Bold on the clip is running on EDGE and not 3G. This explain the slowliness of the browsing. The reason is because the person doing the the DEMO may not have 3G coverage.

I think it pales in comparison to the iphone. the page loads are slow, navigation is not fluid and worst of all you cant load most of the pages on the internet that arent already resized for the tiny BB screen.

i dont understand why its so hard for RIM to get the internet to the user in mid 2008?

I have been playing with the latest pre-release of the browser loaded on a Pearl using Edge. The speed is actually ok but even on the Pearl’s small screen, one gets a soar thumb from scrolling very quickly. I’m also using Safari on my iPod Touch. There is no comparison. The latter is useful and a pleasure to use. Browsing on a BlackBerry is ok for some sites but certainly not enjoyable. The new graphics pointer is a slow and painful way to navigate. I hope BlackBerry don’t become the Palm of the 2010s.

Last year a decent browser wasn’t necessary since RIM sold “business phones.” This year, the concern is whether the Bold has been fairly depicted (EDGE/3G/Wi-Fi, etc). If anyone honestly expected that Bold (or the Thunder) to have a great browser, I’d have to ask what you were basing that belief on. Is it RIM’s many years of browser design and implementation? Or is it their many years of experience with tiny plastic keyboards?

I read that it was unfair to test a Blackberry browser running EDGE to the iPhone 3G. I am sorry to tell you but Safari on my old EDGE only iPhone is faster than the EVDO and WIFI versions of the Blackberrys. I have colleagues in my office with both. The main reason is that even though the BB’s have EVDO or WIFI, their processors cannot handle 3G or WIFE browsing speed. My 1st gen iPhone also beats out WM on 3G. Safari was designed to run on mobile devices and it does it very well.

The Bold supposedly has a faster processor so the web browser should have run much better than this even on EDGE. I can’t wait for this device to come out and listen to the crying. With a faster processor, WIFI, 3G, and GPS, people are going to clog these forums bitching about the shitty battery life..

Here is little topic-off, james and Dtest54: Ahh Interesting! please forgive me, I acknowledge that my english grammar is some poor constructs, all due I am PROFOUNDLY deaf and using the fluent ASL fully ( stand for American Sign Language) since I was born. ASL is consider my first language, not Second language. the basic concept of ASL IS ALMOST SIMILAR EBONIC LANGUAGE. American black people who speaking ebonic as would you consider them as class second language?

I’ve waited long enough for the Bold. I’ll be buying a 3G iPhone tomorrow and give it a test run until the Bold comes out. At that time, I will have had a good two weeks with the iPhone and will be able to tell which phone I really want. The Bold should be out before the 30 day return policy on the iPhone expires.

Frankly, the iPhone is pretty crappy. Within 48 hours of me getting one, I’d given it to someone else to avoid the awful ActiveSync implementation, the possibilty that I might destroy the phone by connecting it to a media player that isn’t iTunes, and the fact that it had already once needed a power cycle because it would not connect to a data network! If I’d paid for it (thankfully it was a work device) I’d have been very upset. I’m back to my 8310 now and so much more productive.

I totally agree.. Although the iPhone doesn’t have java yet so I can’t actually see this video on my phone.(yet that is) these comments are making me feelmore and more comfortable with my iPhone purchase and less and less confident about getting the bold and just having both phones. If these developers make iberry, something that gives instant push email (which isn’t that big a deal) get it emails when u wanna check em like regular people. Or like the other guy said something that reads the pin it’s over. I just don’t see what more blackberry can offer if everyones PROs are only the ease of the keyboard and push email. iPhone will have a updte and shut everyone up. I haven’t lost faith in RIM (still hbe 8800) but day by day it gets less use. Plus RIM doesn’t make great computers..LOL

Is it just me or is RIMs complacency on TRUELY improving the OS remind them of Palm about 5-6 years ago? Palm dominated the market, then others came along with great new features, and Palm just sat there. Eventually they lost their dominance, and now where are they?

RIM dominates the business world today, but their OS is getting stagnant. Even their bread and butter, email, is getting left behind. Have you looked at a html email or a pdf attachment on a BB? It’s horrible. I have to zoom in and enhance to be able to read a pdf at all. Even a Word doc. Try doing the same thing on a iphone. So clean and easy to read. Even the original colors and fonts, just like viewing it in Outlook on a PC. Night and Day from RIM.

I really hope RIM blows their browser and email viewers out and create a true WebKit version soon.

As someone who has a company issued 8800, and a iphone 3G for personal use, I have been doing a lot of comparisons between the two lately. I had high hopes that the Bold would bridge some of the gaps, but clearly I’ll be waiting longer.

I love my BB, and the Bold does look to be the best one yet, but it’s severly falling behind in some key categories.

There are 4 main items I use my phones for: making calls, PIM (calendar / contact mangement), email and internet. The other stuff is nice, but not essentials.

With internet, it’s obvious from this video that iphone still wins hands down.

For phone calls, the interface is much nicer with the iphone, but I do like the pihysical keyboard for speed dials on the BB.

For PIM, both sync with Outlook and do all the basics. The iphone’s screens look nicer, but we’ll call this one a draw.

Where I am most disappointed though is emails. I had my IT mgr at work let me access work email on my iphone with the new Enterprise push services. So now I get work emails on both phones, and I have to say, I get the iphone push emails every bit as fast as on my BB.

Plus, as I mentioned before, the biggest difference is displaying html emails and pdf or Word documents. The iphone blows the BB email viewer away.

And typing emails is even faster now on the iphone for me. It took some getting used to, but now with the auto correct feature, I just type away as fast as I can and it usually catches most of my mistakes. On the BB, I have to make the corrections, or hope spell check catches them. The editing is what takes longer.

In a side by side comparison typing the same pargraph on both phones and sending, I was 15 seconds faster on the iphone. If BB could implement a auto correct feature like the iphone, I think it would be faster, but I don’t see that coming anytime soon.

Bottom line is I find myself reaching for my iphone more, even for work, and leaving my BB in it’s holster. Honestly, if it wasn’t for BB Messenger I doubt I would ever use my 8800 at all.

Time for a major overhaul RIM, not just cosmetics. Otherwise in 4-5 years we may be saying the same thing about you that people are saying about Palm today.
