BlackBerry Bold browser video walk through
Apparently the BlackBerry Bold browser walk through wasn’t enough to hold you guys over… we’ve been getting a flood of emails from y’all wanting some video hotness, and who are we to disappoint? We have to warn you though, it’s not organized that well, but you should get the jist of it. Something we should point out as well is that when using Internet Explorer or Firefox browser emulation, a lot of sites don’t load and it gives an error, even over 3G or Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi was turned off for the first part of the video, and then later turned on. What do you think of the browser now that you’ve seen it in action?

where is the 3g on this phone? It looks to me like your running this review on edge

Wow. Just….wow. That was underwhelming. And I’m one step closer to buying an iPhone.

It’s the same as you get with the 4.5 OS update. Better than before, but basically you can get this now.

Yes it was on EDGE like I said for the first part, then I switched to Wi-Fi. The reason it was on EDGE is because of the poor 3G handover and switching. No, I couldn’t set it to 3G only because even in the heart of NYC, it would be stuck at “Searching for Network…” so I used Wi-Fi. The latest build is actually worse than many of the ones before it in terms of wireless connectivity.

Man I cant believe 3g is soo bad in NYC. I feel like whatever 3g phone I get I am going to get ripped cause slow 3g in NYC

You’ve got to be kidding.
My Curve on VZW is faster than that. Even when I run the fat lady browser.
Here’s to hoping the Thunder doesn’t suck.

Wow, this looks god-awful. iPhone win. Perhaps the Thunder will be better.

why not just use Opera mini?

You people are forgetting one big thing. If 3g is not available in your area, you get edge service. Hence the slow download speeds. It doesn’t matter what phone you have if you are expecting fast download speeds and there is no 3g in your area, you are going to be disappointed. That is what you saw in the first half of this demo. No 3g available so he was using edge.

In a word: Dissapointing
But I didn’t expect much else from BB

urallmorons, no one misunderstood that fact. the question was why was he using EDGE, he answered that. your comment only makes you look like the moron.

So, you have poor 3G in your area yet those who cannot read that fact are spouting off how this phones sucks at browsing. You cannot realistically compare a 3G iPhone and EDGE speed BlackBerry Bold and say see, the BB Bold sucks at web browsing.
Do you have a product that is released and shipping in your hands with a final firmware? The answer is no. If you choose to play with a phone that isn’t supported don’t complain about it.
I keep hearing about iPhone issues left and right yet the fanboy sites keep mum, interesting.

This is a Nice phone but the browser looks painful

That browser makes me want to vomit. Let’s hope that Thunder-storm’s browser is way better.

ppcmd wow, must have hit a nerve.
I seem to have read people in here saying that their 8700 is faster on EDGE than this video shows.
just to antagonize even more.
I agree with keymaker all the way.

Are you kidding me BG? This is a horrible video. Try going to a real graphic intensive site. How about some streaming video while your at it. You’ve been downgraded to little boy status.

BG —- When Wifi was turned on was a connection made?
If so, it was still amazingly slow. If its all EDGE it look about right.
Browser looks ok (obviously huge jump over my 8700) but hard to compare to iPhone without hands on.

@moosebump
Yes, when you see the browser close, and the connection screen popup and Wi-Fi turned, a connection was made.
@ppcmd
The iPhone definitely has some glitches and problems, but honestly, the iPhone 3G does a better job in my opinion of switching to 3G and then back to EDGE. It’s not perfect, but it’s fine for the time being. If you didn’t read my earlier comment, I was in mid-town NYC, a perfectly covered 3G area, yet couldn’t get a 3G signal on the Bold, but could on the iPhone.

It was edge. The tester obviously didn’t have 3g in his area so the blackberry automatically switched to edge.

Just out of curiosity, Boy Genius, but do you think the reason you couldn’t get 3G on the Bold is due to it not being officially “out” for AT&T?

@Jim
No.

Obviously some people did misunderstand because they were all saying that this is like edge all over again. That was because the test was on edge it even showed up on the display during the test.

Thanks for the answer!

Is it just me or is RIMs complacency on TRUELY improving the OS remind them of Palm about 5-6 years ago? Palm dominated the market, then others came along with great new features, and Palm just sat there. Eventually they lost their dominance, and now where are they?
RIM dominates the business world today, but their OS is getting stagnant. Even their bread and butter, email, is getting left behind. Have you looked at a html email or a pdf attachment on a BB? It’s horrible. I have to zoom in and enhance to be able to read a pdf at all. Even a Word doc. Try doing the same thing on a iphone. So clean and easy to read. Even the original colors and fonts, just like viewing it in Outlook on a PC. Night and Day from RIM.
I really hope RIM blows their browser and email viewers out and create a true WebKit version soon.
As someone who has a company issued 8800, and a iphone 3G for personal use, I have been doing a lot of comparisons between the two lately. I had high hopes that the Bold would bridge some of the gaps, but clearly I’ll be waiting longer.
I love my BB, and the Bold does look to be the best one yet, but it’s severly falling behind in some key categories.
There are 4 main items I use my phones for: making calls, PIM (calendar / contact mangement), email and internet. The other stuff is nice, but not essentials.
With internet, it’s obvious from this video that iphone still wins hands down.
For phone calls, the interface is much nicer with the iphone, but I do like the pihysical keyboard for speed dials on the BB.
For PIM, both sync with Outlook and do all the basics. The iphone’s screens look nicer, but we’ll call this one a draw.
Where I am most disappointed though is emails. I had my IT mgr at work let me access work email on my iphone with the new Enterprise push services. So now I get work emails on both phones, and I have to say, I get the iphone push emails every bit as fast as on my BB.
Plus, as I mentioned before, the biggest difference is displaying html emails and pdf or Word documents. The iphone blows the BB email viewer away.
And typing emails is even faster now on the iphone for me. It took some getting used to, but now with the auto correct feature, I just type away as fast as I can and it usually catches most of my mistakes. On the BB, I have to make the corrections, or hope spell check catches them. The editing is what takes longer.
In a side by side comparison typing the same pargraph on both phones and sending, I was 15 seconds faster on the iphone. If BB could implement a auto correct feature like the iphone, I think it would be faster, but I don’t see that coming anytime soon.
Bottom line is I find myself reaching for my iphone more, even for work, and leaving my BB in it’s holster. Honestly, if it wasn’t for BB Messenger I doubt I would ever use my 8800 at all.
Time for a major overhaul RIM, not just cosmetics. Otherwise in 4-5 years we may be saying the same thing about you that people are saying about Palm today.
