iPhone 3G to Get Red for the Holidays?
Apple’s second entry into the mobile space is an undeniable success; it’s selling like hotcakes. If one steps back for a moment however, what Apple is doing is quite interesting. They’ve built an awesome handset, no question. The UI is spectacular, the form factor is beautiful and the functionality is fair enough. The iPhone 3G is probably the most desired handset in the world. In the alternate universe that Apple creates with its products however, what’s particularly interesting is the fact that it even manages to build hype by slowly re-introducing the most basic concepts in the mobile world to its offering. Let us elaborate… Think about all of the hype surrounding the App Store and the fact the iPhone would be “open” to third-party development. The world erupted when we first learned about this, and again when the App Store launched, but was it really a big deal? What other smarthphone platform out there doesn’t support third-party development? It’s just the way that Apple rolls. It has happened before and it’ll happen all over again when Apple does things like introduce MMS and copy / paste into existing models or a decent camera into future models. No these aren’t new features by any stretch of the imagination but the world will still go gaga when they come to the iPhone. Sure, there will already be plenty of 8 and 10 megapixel camera phones out there once Apple finally introduces an iPhone with a 3.2 or 5 megapixel cam, but it will still be huge and exciting news for most of the world. Mmm. So with all that out of the way, it looks like Apple may be paving the road once again with its latest innovation; colored plastic cases. First black and white, and now red? Craziness! Quick, run and blog about it! Apple already has (Product) RED ties so it’s perfectly feasible. It’ll also sell like hotcakes because, well, it’s an iPhone. Just wait a year or two until Apple really spices things up by introducing the world to little plastic buttons that can be used to simplify phone operation! It will make typing faster and more accurate and when coupled with a touchscreen, the user will have a complete and versatile interface experience. Can you imagine such a thing?

BG, your a Smart Ass! And i respect you for it!
A IPHONE with buttons, shit ain’t happen’n!
Apple is respected and wanted so much because of one reason… they listen to the customer and give them what they want in very impressive style.
If MS had taken the same or similar approach to all or most of their projects (i.e.: Vista is only the latest fuck up), the world would love them all the same!
And just so you don’t get the wrong idea, BlackBerry is the best thing out there right along with the iphone.

What apple does is create a user experience that is actually enjoyable. Certainly 3rd party apps have existed for some time, but I can’t say I’ve ever owned a phone (smart phone or otherwise) which made installing and removing apps so convenient.
I’ve owned phones capable of playing media, but never one that made viewing media on it worthwhile.
Until Apple came out with the iPhone, browsing the internet via a phone was at best a chore, squinting at miniscule screens. Now (thanks to Apple) were starting to see new phones in which this is no longer the case (i.e. the Instinct and god willing the Thunder).
Naysayers will shout they’re general disdain until they’re blue in the face, but the fact is that the iPhone IS a novel product, not because it offers unique features, but because it offers a unique experience.

I agree with BG’s post but lets not forget how long RIM has stretched out the current models by offering one with no wifi and another with wifi and one without this and another without that, so nothing new here. Apple has been doing this with capacity and now color where as RIM has been doing this with features, stretching out the sales cycle of a products by reintroducing it with some differences.
This is annoying to customers but good for business.

@detest: agreed whats next navy blue or pink? weres the inovation?

Apple has a history of adding Red, just look at their ipods. They will sell whatever colors they think customers will buy.
RIM has a history of withholding features to sell more units.
Thats the difference.

Big mobile touchscreens existed few years before iPhone, but Apple were able to create “the hype”, as always. To me iPhone is way too over-rated, but it’s an interesting phone for sure. The worst thing about it is the way they sell it, with expensive monthly plans which most people dont need. But for those who need expensive plans, the phone is almost perfect. I say almost because of the “minor” lacks: SIM-locked, poor third party software compared to others, no modem function, no user replaceble battery, no radio, no MMS, bad camera. My “perfect” phone is a E or N series Nokia with a bigger screen (more than 3″) and resolution (about 640×480), so I guess I will wait a few more months (I heard Nokia Tube will have 640×360, which would be quite great for me).

after add ons how much is a blackberry plan currently?
in 2001 my first blackberry plan was close to $400 monthly.
You guys seem to be forgetting one huge thing.
This is effectively year one product two,for a company that never made a phone before. Are you kidding me with the bashing…
Try and find an iphone on overstock.com…grow up.
its a success.
mms-softare update,copy and paste-software update.
camera.Come on. If you know anything about photography you know that the sensor size is more important than megapixels. My d70 nikon only has 6.1 mpixels.
photo quality is about the glass.end of story.
Dont hate the player.
Nice article.Fair.

Let you swap out a used phone for a new one just because you’d rather have a different color now? I don’t think so.

The “RED” one is nice but it will probably still be lacking incredibly simple apps such as mms and of course video. (Not that anyone uses the video) but its nice to have when wondering what a huge part of your paycheck is going to and your old phone that you paid 30 dollars for is sitting there in the corner and you cant even sale it. Im mad all over again…
