iPhone 3G to Get Red for the Holidays?
Apple’s second entry into the mobile space is an undeniable success; it’s selling like hotcakes. If one steps back for a moment however, what Apple is doing is quite interesting. They’ve built an awesome handset, no question. The UI is spectacular, the form factor is beautiful and the functionality is fair enough. The iPhone 3G is probably the most desired handset in the world. In the alternate universe that Apple creates with its products however, what’s particularly interesting is the fact that it even manages to build hype by slowly re-introducing the most basic concepts in the mobile world to its offering. Let us elaborate… Think about all of the hype surrounding the App Store and the fact the iPhone would be “open” to third-party development. The world erupted when we first learned about this, and again when the App Store launched, but was it really a big deal? What other smarthphone platform out there doesn’t support third-party development? It’s just the way that Apple rolls. It has happened before and it’ll happen all over again when Apple does things like introduce MMS and copy / paste into existing models or a decent camera into future models. No these aren’t new features by any stretch of the imagination but the world will still go gaga when they come to the iPhone. Sure, there will already be plenty of 8 and 10 megapixel camera phones out there once Apple finally introduces an iPhone with a 3.2 or 5 megapixel cam, but it will still be huge and exciting news for most of the world. Mmm. So with all that out of the way, it looks like Apple may be paving the road once again with its latest innovation; colored plastic cases. First black and white, and now red? Craziness! Quick, run and blog about it! Apple already has (Product) RED ties so it’s perfectly feasible. It’ll also sell like hotcakes because, well, it’s an iPhone. Just wait a year or two until Apple really spices things up by introducing the world to little plastic buttons that can be used to simplify phone operation! It will make typing faster and more accurate and when coupled with a touchscreen, the user will have a complete and versatile interface experience. Can you imagine such a thing?

First.
Yes this is so true. I’m calling it now, just like the BG is…
But I will also call out a 32GB model. BG, if I guess a date, will you give me a free one?
ghey.
Looks nice, but I’ll use a cover, so it doesn’t really matter to me.
This is typical AT&T strategy. They always introduce holiday colors for their phones. Valentine’s day was Red Shine, Blackjack II and Curve. It is nothing new. It will give the ladies a choice between Red and White though. As usual, it will sell like the rest of them. Thanks for the info though. I wonder if they will have it overseas.
That post just about sums up the iPhone and how people buy into it just because of the hype.
You know I hate how the hype as blinded people but I will say that if Apple can do it then good for them. Its similiar to the sidekick. They keep putting out a sidekick that improves over the previous one but its not that great. But people still go ahead and buy it.
I have a sidekick (LX, first sidekick) and my friend has an iphone (first gen) and we were saying were fine with our phones that we can wait till the next one model comes out. Were not gonna run out and buy a new phone because everyone has one. I rather wait till they improve them more and then buy the real next gen model.
gross
Zach is right about the iphone, it easily be the most feature-packed thing on the market, like the samsung croix or the eten glofish, but it’s just a watered down smartphone with limitless potential that’s easy to hype, as long as it’s done slowly.
This mock up doesn’t look so great, but I believe the actual model will so I’ll definitely be interested in seeing how it looks in person. I wonder if Apple will let you swap out colors if you have the 16GB white or black…
Hype Hype Hype.
Now that I got that out of the way, Do any of you guys ever look past the hype? Or look at it from a money making business perspective? Hype is what you would want if you sold a product so what’s so bad about it?
DON’T BUY ONE IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT!
It’s a cool phone and doesn’t do everything but it does pretty well. Stop acting like you know what you’re talking about because you don’t.
I like mine but I miss my BB pearl
It sucks to type on it why they can’t have lendscape keyboard for sms and emails? you can use it when your one the web WTF
meh
i guess this was legit!

The people on this board post as if it matters why a product sells. Newsflash: it doesn’t. I mean, who cares whether it’s a “real” or “watered down” smartphone, or whether it’s “all hype.” Simply stated, it sells. Let’s face it, they could give BlackBerrys away for free, and there still wouldn’t be a line.
I’m realizing that “iPhone is not a real smartphone” guy is the same one that says the Mac isn’t a real computer because there aren’t any games. In other words, the posts come from mom’s basement in between sessions of WoW. As I said before, in the real world, what matters is revenue, not whether the 5% of computer users that post on sites such as these believe your device is “real” or not. Until you graps this, you will remain in your mom’s basement, figuratively if not literally, for the rest of your life.
FYI. . .if you see the phone market as representative of many great companies selling many great products, and acknowledge that even if you like the iPhone that doesn’t mean you have to hate the BlackBerry or vice versa, this post isn’t directed at you. If you can appreciate a product for its advantages and disadvantages even if that product is not for you, then this post isn’t aimed at you. But if you got pissed when I mentioned the “mom’s basement” part, well, say hello to her for me.
Cheers.
*yawn*
The problem I have with the iPhone 3G, and why I’m contemplating returning it in favor of a Bold, is that it *sounds* really good but it just doesn’t work well. It’s laggy, the screens tend to freeze up now where as before they were fluid. The App Store, that was supposed to be so revolutionary, really isn’t offering anything that profound. The fact that you still can’t have applications running in the background means no real IM clients will be coming out for the device any time soon.
I’m not a Blackbery fanboy either, but other than the media, it really does do everything an iPhone does better.
nice, multicolored.
Apple plans to have a push notifications instead of background processes in Sept…. It’s only a matter of time…
I like my red N95 thank you 83
I want 32GB, but Yuk! The only person in the world that needs a Red phone is the President of the United States!
I don’t know about the holidays but maybe at Macworld. With the colored back its not much of a stretch.
As for 32GB, I wouldn’t expect that until the 3rd generation iPhone is released.
As far as copy/paste, Aplle doesn’t hold that a high priority. MMS is most likely even lower or they are actually against MMS altogether.
ehh, i dont care what color they come out with.. im not an iphone fan.
I have noticed that the 3g is not as smooth as the original I played with one at the att store and it keep lagging it even froze up a couple of times. I’m not sure 2.0 was ready for prime time
I do not see why people like red phones. It looks terrible.
It seems like every popular phone reintroduces itself a few months later as…”NOW IN RED!!!”
I guess the kids out there want their phones seen.
Why do we have to keep talking about the iPhone when we are all waiting for the release date of The BOLD!?
