Blackberry KickStart in the concrete jungle

Yeah, we’re not sure if Canada can be categorized as a part of the “concrete jungle” either, but semantics aside we’re looking at the first full review of the upcoming BlackBerry Kick Start 8220. The first ever flip ‘Berry has been an item of significant interest ever since we leaked the pictures back in April. Not much has changed, with the device still sporting the same clunky styling, large LCD, and Pearl-esque control layout. As far as we know, we’re still on for an early Fall release, so you won’t have to wait too long to get your grubby hands on one. For the time being, however, these shots and review will have to suffice as the next best thing.

*sigh* and there I was all excitedly waiting form another b*tch-slapping he-said, she-said fest between Kevin and BG. The civility is disappointing! ;)

    no 3G and tooo thick.
but good price though, this will sell but people will not want to pay $30/month for data on a $49 phone.

I don’t see the advantage of this phone over the Pearl.

The keyboard is ripped right off the Pearl. Nothing new there and therefore boring. But it can bring those who insist on the clam shell form to the BB family. Which shows something. BB offers candy bar, touchscreen (Thunder), and clam shell. I would LOVE to see Apple come out with a device that features a physical keyboard. But no, they’re a one-trick pony. (Good thing that one trick is pretty damned impressive.)

Eh, the styling was not bad but from this picture it is rather ugly but maybe it’s one of those you gotta see it in person things.

Correction. Keypad not boring. The keys are significantly larger than those on the pearl I like that a LOT. I never cared for those tiny pearl keys although I do like the sure-type quite a bit. Looks like this lacks the raw horsepower of the Bold, though.

It looks like the Krzr, but the pearl’s keypad jammed in it. It might be cool, but with the Bold already out in Asia, and the Thunder on its way, this might be an after-thought. If the price tag is right, it could be the successor of the pearl.

My clients are major Corporations - nobody has an iPhone at their work - all Blackberries all because of the business / productivity software like CRM, SAP, etc and the ‘IT’ backroom through process… and most are waiting for the ‘ThunderStorm’ to check it out… this Kickstart is just what it is called - a kickstart for those at the lower price range… based on some new research ‘Asian’ continents like ‘light and thin’ so IMO this one will not work well there… not sure why Rim brought this out ahead of ‘ThunderStorm’… ??

Not a bad looking device at all and it has OS 4.6 That is pretty impressive in itself, but it’s really thick and I’m pretty sure this device is going to appeal to more females only wanting a BB because it’s the new trend other than buying an iPhone. Either way, I like it, I just wish it had 3G. Why won’t manufacturers just build all their devices with 3G radios in them…? We are heading up on 2010 and 4G soon enough people! Get back into the lab and put 3G in everything you make from now on.

    I don’t get it…
closed its the about the same size as the pearl (other than being twice as thick) and so what do they do with all that real estate gained by making it a flip?
bigger keys and a bunch of wasted space.

and ugly. the bottom and top parts don’t even look like they belong together.

Though lots of people hate flips, I’ve always preferred them since the form factor protects the screen from scratches and prevents accidental dialing. I don’t understand why no one ever bothered making one with a full QWERTY keyboard - it wouldn’t be *that* much bigger than this…

Data is $20 and you don’t have to get it. Well that’s how it is for my BB Curve 8320 on T-Mobile, they said I could pay for data if I want.

RIM mandates its carriers to force customer to have data, although some carriers do not follow RIM’s rules.

And to have a blackberry with no data? thats a waste imo.

    Patrick its “Thunder” not Thunderstorm.
Gabriel, its not been officially released anywhere, just select people have them.
