iPhone tethering at long last
We’ll state this from the jump: the method described in this post is not for the faint of heart, and may lead to AT&T charging you for excessive data usage and/or terminating your account due to unauthorized usage. Still interested? Read on. iPhone warrior Nate True has devised a way to tether your iPhone 3G to your Apple laptop. The process involves a homebrew collection of software and hardware hacks, and ultimately allows your computer to see your iPhone as a modem thanks to a combination of 3proxy, Terminal, and Wi-Fi. This is an imperfect solution, and involves a conscious rebellion against AT&T’s terms of service, but while we wait for an official solution from AT&T and Apple this is, for the time being, the next best thing.

Man this sounds so good but I’m not sure if it’s gonna be worth it if AT&T actually decides to terminate your service. Still, I’m interested and I’m gonna chck this out cause I want to tether! I wonder if this is compatible for windows and macs or just macs…
Just macs for the moment…
I want 1 …
all I want is A2DP … someone, anyone? please?
Someone’s got a case of stick-it-to-the-man-neosis….
Yes, I just quoted school of rock…. wow… just wow….
the hardware for A2DP is already in the phone…hopefully they’ll activate it with the next software update!
I dont think it would be THAT hard for someone to release a jailbreak app to do this for us would it? I know that apple and ATT wont be putting one in the app store, so that would be a HUGE reason for me to jailbreak my phone
I’m sure apple would want to allow tethering, but I’m willing to lay odds that at&t had apple remove it b/c they couldn’t figure out a way charge you for it.
I hope that everything I’ve said above is wrong and tethering will be possible in a future firmware update.
Thanks Ryan. Apple likes to keep a few bargain chips at hand, that is okay. But such a basic functionality like A2DP in what is an ipod at heart is really an idiocy on their part, it should have been included since day one (same goes for copy and paste).
Someone already did a much better job tethering a BlackBerry and a PC!
Well, that’s what I was told…. ;P
Cool, if you want to terminate your contract…
Is there a hack for PC users? Sorry I don’t have a Mac.
tsk tsk tsk theyd want to cahrg you a tethering geen man appl you picked the wrong GSMcarrier
sorry i menat to sayy if consumers want to tether they went with the wrong gsm carrier as well as did apple. when your caught tethering half the tim they smack you with a $100 tethering fee then they terminate youre service hower tmo USA dose not charge you for tethering nor did sprint when i had them in the late 90’s amazing huh?
the only people who seem to care about wther or not they carch you for tethering is Att and Verizon
You can get stereo bluetooth adapters made for iPod and the original iPhone which work fine on the 3G… I found the quality of the one I bought to be subpar compared to my old TILT phone, but I will buy another once I get my money back for this one. Needless to say – it IS possible.

Those are just two… I bought the Sony so I know that works, but I’m a audiophile and pretty picky.
So happy for this! Now, I’m just waiting for a more powerful camera and a removable or changeable battery.

I am sick and tired of Apple and AT&T restricting things with the iPhone. First it’s the ’special’ rate plan, then they say you can’t unlock it, or we will brick your phone with an update. Now is you cant use it as a modem. For the price of the thing (including the slavery of 2 years), I should be able to to do whatever I want with it. It is less hassle to buy the Touch Diamond on ebay. It is cheaper too in the long run. Granted its WinMo phone. At least I am free to do whatever I want with it.
Wow, even in Canada it’s $30 for 6 GB of data, tethered or not. I think Apple is finding it hard to penetrate the Enterprise market with a phone that is crippled to the point where it can’t be used as a modem and it can’t accept a foldable keyboard through USB or Bluetooth. Fix this Apple!
theres been so many probs with a the iphone as well. Ive been working for att for a year and so many activation and phone shutting down randomly etc. Buggy first batch of phones. You’d think apple would learn from their first go around.
