Nokia N810: Twice as Fast, Half the Price*

Oh sorry, we thought it was ok for anyone to make that false statement as long as there was an asterisk at the end. Hey, at least you won’t be paying added charges totaling more than the initial purchase price of the N810 over the course of a two-year contract! CompUSA (you remember them, right?) just dropped the price of Nokia’s latest Internet Tablet to a very reasonable $299. Wow! 4.2″ touchscreen display, nice big slide-out qwerty keyboard, open Linux OS, the ability to fire up Android on it; there’s plenty to love about the N810. Considering Nokia’s Internet tablet is still up at $430 on Nokia’s site and as high as $480 on Best Buy, this is definitely a pretty solid price point. Shipping starts around $8 and the tablet is listed as being in stock and ready to go. If you’ve been procrastinating, now is a good time to stop.

    Also on Amazon:

VERY nice price! And as far as I remember, the N800 also dropped to a much cheaper price a bit before the N810 was presented – hopefully the successor to the N810 will be shown soon as well.

Don Louie, yeah, basically the same thing, but with WiMAX radio inside = the N810 WiMAX Edition.

I guess that one will become available when there is actually a WiMAX network up and running…

You have to distinguish “Total cost of ownership” from “Purchase Price” before you assert a company is making “false statements” and even if you are to compare TCA with Purchase Price you gotta calculate freaking Present Value.

Also, If I were to buy a Sony HD TV to update my WalMart non-descript cheapo TV and that required that I pay more for digital HD cable so that I can enjoy the TV I paid for, I would not go about bashing Sony for being more expensive to run.

I might just not be in the know, but why would anyone want a device like this but doesnt have a cell phone or calling component or even SIM-card based internet access? Is there some alternative use it fills that I’m not seeing?

I see plenty of use for this sort of device. Like a web/email device around the house and office, when you don’t want to carry a computer. When you travel it’s great, at the health club, etc. I currently use an iPod Touch for most these things, but this is a really attractive alternative.

    @ Abid

I had the N800 until recently and these devices change the the very idea of what you considered possible in a handheld device. You’ll have to research that one on your own.

A recent poll of N8*0 series user’s showed that the vast majority of us DON’T want a built-in cell phone capability. we’re fine tethering our N8*0’s to our cell phones for mobile connectivity as it is.

Abid: You can use bluetooth DUN on this device for pairing with a cell phone. Some phones can be hacked to not force you to pay extra fees to the phone company for doing this. I plan to pair this bad boy with my 755P. I’ll need parachute pants or a man-purse.
