HTC Diamond loses angled back, renamed Victor
Yeah, the HTC Touch Diamond is a fine phone, but if you’ve ever handled one you’ll notice that the angled back is a bit of a polarizing force. It looks sharp, but causes some problems when you attempt lay the device firmly on a flat surface. Ever the masters of 1000 variations on a similar theme, HTC looks poised to release another version of the Touch Diamond that sports a flat back to replace the angled edges on the current version. Codenamed the HTC Victor, this new handset looks to be functionally identical to the Touch Diamond, save for a new casing on the rear of the phone. It is certainly not the most aesthetically pleasing thing we’ve ever seen, but as far as function goes, we’re happy to see carriers provided with a set of choices. What do you think? Love it or hate it? Couldn’t care less?

Unless it has a memory card slot, this phone is as pointless to me as the Diamond. To only offer 4GB in these days at that price is ridiculous.

As long as the phone is offered is GSM-flavor for AT&T, I’m happy. I could care less about what the back of the phone looks like…just get me that phone!

I can’t believe that HTC didn’t design the Diamond to have 3 or 4 ‘facets’ come out to the same depth to act as feet for the device. Seems obvious to me.

This has been released in the UK as the T-Mobile Compact IV. Specs seem to be slightly different, weight is down to 98g and it gains about 1mm in width and depth. ROM is less as well, but presumably thats because of the T-Mobile software running on it that replaces the Touch-Flo interface!?

Hey!! Are you sure that this phone is the GSM version? Because I think that this one is exactly the -soon to release- CDMA version announced on the TELUS site.
Could it be that HTC is looking for the market to clearly differetiate between both versions?

We know that yet!, but I think that theirs correspondence is
CDMA models- Victor and Raphael (w/keyboard)

We have a HTC Diamond - I must say before redesigning the back, they could have tried to fit a microSD slot somewhere and maybe do some tweaking and cleaning up in TouchFLO3D.
I like the back and have not seen it to be a problem. Although it’s more “plasticy” than in the promo photos.

@Edgar: You realize this same phone is going to be offered by a LOT of different carriers, right? The Victor is already being sold as the MDA Compact IV in Europe, and now as itself through HTC. Chances are it (or the Diamond) will be sold in CDMA and GSM flavors in a lot of other places, as well

What no one will tell you is the Diamond blows. Horrible buttons, poor performance, bad battery life, bad ui. Treo or Smartphone should be your only winmo choices.

You guys should also take into consideration that the P3700 (original Diamond) has 192MB of DDR RAM where as the P3702 (Victor) only has 128MB of DDR RAM. It’s said that the extra 64MB of RAM in the P3700 is dedicated to the graphics accelerator in the Qualcomm chip.

I suppose it’d be too much to ask for the screen to have 262,000 colors like the smaller flip phones have. Yes, I want all that glorious color on my new state of the art phone.
