T-Mobile Sidekick launching July 30th, no, it’s called the Sidekick 2008

We just got a hold of some internal T-Mobile snap shots, and any Sidekick will truly appreciate them. They detail the much-rumored Sidekick Gekko, from here on out known as the… wait for it… almost there… T-Mobile Sidekick 2008! That’s it, guys. Creative name right? In all seriousness, it looks like the word about customizing the shells on the device look to be true. It’s an “entry-level” device, and as such, we reckon it won’t break the bank. Here are the official specs on the T-Mobile Sidekick 2008:
- Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
- 2 megapixel camera
- 2.6″ WQVGA screen
- Video recording
- Stereo A2DP Bluetooth
- Standard Sidekick features
Couple more shots after the jump along with some more info!

whoa whoa wait. the lx records up to 20 seconds? that blows. but if the screen would have been 3 inches the phone would have been A LOT bigger

Thank you BGR for correctly saying the phrase “couldn’t care less”. 9 times out of 10 I hear “Could care less”, when they really mean could NOT care less. Thanks.

Oops! You said that in the HTC Diamond thread. Oh well.

@ The Outside well i have no problem with it being bigger its already bigger than the slide u feel me and the way the shells look wrapped around the slide makes it look dumb neway and they took out the mood lights thats gay they should have kept those and made it so u can change the settings to have the lights whatever color u want…..Baq on the shell issue i say if u gon make a phone customizable it should b able to b fully customizable not just the shell but the keypad and around the screen kuz ne1 can have the same shell as u but if u have the keypad different u have somethin 2 brag about

Nope…they couldn’t have made the screen bigger. What you’re forgetting is the price point. Cheaper device to manufacture = cheaper sale price (usually). In all honestly this thing will sell like hotcakes. Why? It will be cheap enough and people don’t know better. But it is totally a 2003 device, and whoever said this is basically the same Sidekick as the original, is right for the most part. For the educated among us, it’s hard to recommend a Sidekick device for someone we know as there are 100 better devices that do the same things just as good or better. T-Mo is trying to not lose their core audience which is understandable. But, they should have at least spun off the Sidekick brand into a professional line. Ah, they did! Yet they failed miserably with the Shadow line, and from what I’ve seen and heard, the Shadow II is worse than the first one.

This phone is nice for people who want to be creative, but the sidekick is still so limited compared to so many other phones being rolled out in 2008.
I love sidekicks but i’m growing up, would hate to drop them but T Mobile refuses to make a sidekick that is “Grown Up.”

Ok buy an iPhone, but here’s the cost breakdown. Unlimited internet AND texts with the iPhone will cost you an extra $50/month. With the Sidekick, unlimited data and texts will cost you $20/month. That’s a difference of $720 over the life of your contract. If you’re just wanting to text, use AIM, myspace, and the internet, you’re crazy not to go for the Sidekick. Admittedly, the iPhone is a better phone, but not a better deal.

lol this 2008 deal is a joke….we’re not their target audience it’s for kids, really… when a 3g sidekick rolls out mark my words iphone killer… i wont buy one but i know these things are still wildly popular…implement 3g functionality and services and even the least tech savvy teens will spray their shorts… tmobz ain’t worried i bet, neither is danger… they’ve got a huge ace up their sleeves and when it drops tmobz will finally compete in the 3g game…kids love this sh*t as do those rap guyz…

Sooooooo… what the hell’s the difference between this and the LX????????

Well, I honestly still think T-mobile knows exactly what they’re doing when the continue with the Sidekick.. I think they really don’t care abouit 3-G at the moment.. Because they know most Teenagers don’t.. Todays teenagers thrive on Text messaging, Instant messages on all clients, and above all…… MYSPACE. Any type of Sidekick is clearly a winner in all aspects when those are the only things being considered.. Not to mention, that the sidekick is an AWESOME multitasking phone. -If you wanted to send and email, text message, Instant message on AIM, and use the internet on a Windows Mobile phone.. I GUARANTEE you that you’re phone would freeze.. I know this, because I had The Wing and HATED it.. Big clunky freezing brick. This new phone just gives new options… as well as a couple added Specs. I agree with people on here that say “todays youth is going to EAT THIS UP”. Keep at it T-Mobile, you know EXACTLY what you’re doing.. Now call me when the Vario IV reaches the U.S. (Its Tmobiles version of the HTC Touch Diamond) I guarantee that will be a 3G phone that will KILL the I-Phone.

@ Boy Genius
True true but sidekicks are gonna sell no matter what but u do have a valid point and as i read someone sayin about 3G ppl with sidekicks are not worried about 3G its not really that serious to us ppl in the sidekick community it is for them At&t suckers which i would like 2 state AT&t sucks ass i heard ya don’t even have insurance so f the iphone also i have a itouch and even that freezes up occsionaly ppl want a phone thats going to move fast without and hesitations or freezing and the sidekick is good for that unless u have alot of songs on ur memory card then it slows up and with the video feature don’t try putting any music videos on there they freeze up but i will b sending baq my tony hawk i thinnk because i am still in the buyers remorse and get this 1 probably…..
@ Boy Genius is July 30th the official release date?

IS THE NEW SIDEKICK FINALLY GONNA HAVE CUSTOM RING TONES SO THAT U CAN MAKE UR OWN AND STOP BUYIN EM DOES N E 1 KNO?????????

lol, Thank You Orlando for speaking the truth. I’ve been with T-mobile for 7 years and I still think the Sidekicks are a great phone (granted), I do feel like i am getting little too old for them at 24 now. Hence I went for the Wing, and let me officially say I kicked the phone to the curb and wnt back to a real “keyboard” and better interface.
Freezing was an understatement. The general fact is if you do not live in a metro, then you are quite fine with Edge. Secondly, as someone else mentioned, it is very hard to beat a phone that offers unlimited email, text/picture messaging, internet, and Im’s for $20. I feel very content paying $70 a month for 1000 anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, and unlimited data and text messaging with gr8 customer service and hardly ever any service outages or drop calls …
Keep trucking a long T-mobile, but seriously, WE DO NEED A 3G Sidekick and PLS design one for teenagers AND ALSO a Professional crowd. I cannot be in a business meeting with my phone blinking like a strobe light ….

seriously can sume1 plz anwser that question i wanna know 2 so i can buy it wen it come out

@Fujitsujeff
the blinking lights can be turned off. in phone settings -> battery & display you can turn off the blinking lights during sleep. in sound profiles you can edit each profile to not blink when receiving a message, loading a web page, etc.
@cottylord
not sure about this new sidekick model, but the tony hawk edition and ota upgrade for lx have bluetooth file sharing capabilities so they should be able to receive non-tmobile ringtones.
