iPhone Device Software 2.0.1 on the way?

Every once in a while, we have a slow enough day at the BGR HQ that we sometimes put on our “nerd glasses” and peruse our web server logs for some nitty gritty information. As we are a fairly popular gadget and technology blog, (no, we’re not declaring war) it seems like a popular ‘first destination’ for many people who have loaded up the latest beta OS for an existing device or even unreleased devices not yet on the market.
Needless to say, over the last few days, we have noticed some interesting build numbers for the iPhone and iPhone 3G. It appears that AT&T and Apple are testing iPhone device software version 2.0.1, builds 5B101 (iPhone) and 5B103 (iPhone 3G). Although we are not certain of much more information than this little bit, we do know that testing began prior to the launch of device software 2.0 and the iPhone 3G on July 11th. We have also narrowed down the known test users to the San Francisco (40 mins from Cupertino) and Atlanta (HQ of AT&T Mobility) areas. Hmm.

Regardless, this shows that Apple has a nice headstart on what will likely be the first major update to the iPhone 3G… and perhaps we’ll even get an official iChat client!
P.S. – Don’t forget our totally awesome iPhone 3G giveaway, ok? You’ll be getting OS 2.0.1 soon enough…

iphone is so hot recently, everyone is talking about this.
I’ll buy one, it’s cool, right?
Wow… What strength are those “nerd glasses?”
Any info on what 2.0.1 will fix?
Keen Eye Boy Genius. So does this mean they come to BGR to keep tabs on their competitors(BB Storm)? I don’t think they were merely testing for safari’s rendering or speed. But it’d be sweet if they would add A2DP with this 2.0.1/5B103 update.
I think we’ll get an official iChat client sometime, but not with 2.0.1, I think 2.0.1 will be bug fixes only, like 1.1.4. Maybe in a 2.1 or 2.0.2 update though.
thats y i love my BB 8320 curve. it already have A2DP. The iphone is finally getting features blackberry already have.
iPhone doesn’t ALREADY have A2DP? For a music device that’s been out for a year that is just sad. And here I thought it was just RIM that didn’t care about consumers….
Let’s not get our hopes up. Not all of the point updates for 1.0 included new features.
Well at least if it fixes the bugs i haven’t encountered yet I will be happy to know that I won’t see them in the future. Does that even make sense?
That hansel, he’s so hot right now!
You should probably spend more time investigating the problems that your own server has instead of snooping around Apple’s.
Yeah.. site has been laggin last for the last day or two..

Now you just have wait for Blackberry to get the functionality that the iPhone already has. They have had years to sort it out and now they have to play catchup with the iPhone. I must be galling to you.

“thats y i love my BB 8320 curve. it already have A2DP. The iphone is finally getting features blackberry already have.”
BlackBerry is still behind in features the iPhone already has … features that are in all high end phones that leave BB in the 90’s. No Desktop-like web browsing experience on BB wha? No HTML email until September (officially) wha? No modern applications (all look like Apple Newton era throwbacks) wha? BlackBerry is an extremely aged unit and you can tell. The ONLY thing it does better than anyone else is push email.
Whatever they do better fix the battery use life or (sadly) this is going back on day 29.
Battery life of iPhone 3G is better than other 3G devices.

no bugs – you are lucky. This 2.0 code is really straining itself on my EDGE iPhone. Listening to music and doing anything else (calendar, email, omnifocus) will often result in the “beach ball” effect cause the music playback to stutter and the app I am working on to freeze for up to 30 seconds
Me and my friends have been having a problem with apps crashing on the iPhone after synching to iTunes.
Every time you synch to iTunes, whether you downloaded the app there or on the phone, the app either gets corrupted or the OS can’t handle it. At first, the app just quits. Then, after you try and restart it a couple of times iPhone gives up and crashes.
I hope 2.1 fixes this. Only solution I know is to delete your apps from both the phone and iTunes, download them again on your phone, and then set your iTunes NOT to synch apps until the bug fix happens.
Pretty sloppy, Steve. If I wanted this kind of crap, I would have bought a Microsoft product.
hope it is an update. 2.0 is ehhhhh. noticable lag. random backups in itunes 7.7 (which is slow as hell as well)…and the backups take forever too.
I hope it incorporates the bluetooth echo fix!!!
In Safari, on certain web pages, when entering text in input fields, after each character the browser jumps to the top of the page the quickly jumps back to the input field. for example at wikipedia.com it will do this. in 1.1.4 it did not do that, when entering data it just stayed focused on that text field.
slightly off topic Itunes is 7.7 buggy under windows. On my work XP computer, Itunes will load (seen in task manager but does not appear beyond that, no program windows or in task bar) if “networks are enabled” I assume its trying to access web through blocked port. But if I disable both network cards before I start Itunes, Itunes sees this immediately, appears as it should, but compains it cannot access itunes store.
I don’t understand. Apple said repeatedly that the reason the iPhone originally had EDGE was for the battery life. People whined and cried about the lack of 3G. They give people a 3G iPhone and then people whine and cry about battery life. You get one or the other. Don’t like the battery life? Turn off 3G. 3G chips are battery hogs. I think Apple has done well implementing 3G without decreasing battery life all that much. Would I like it to last longer? Of course, but it makes it through a day.
My volume keeps lowering by it’s self…. is there anyone else experiencing this problem
My volume also keeps lowering, apps also going down on startup.
Maybe with 2.0.1 apps will launch faster!!
