Samsung i760 to benefit from Windows Mobile 6.1, YouTube client

Sure, the Samsung i760 may be getting a bit long in the tooth, but there’s nothing like a little OS refresh and added functionality to breathe new life into an aging dinosaur. Originally scheduled for a June launch, Verizon has officially released the Windows Mobile 6.1 update for is i760 handset. There’s nothing as sexy as EV-DO Rev. A support in there, but if the following list of improvements don’t get you excited about your oddly-shaped slide out QWERTY mobile companion, then we’re pretty sure there’s no hope left for you:

  • Applied, several Bluetooth improvements (updated BT DUN profile, improved scanning)
  • Applied, support for YouTube videos
  • Applied, Qualcomm patch
  • Fixed, memory leakage by replacing POOM API
  • Fixed, notification malfunction under certain conditions
  • Fixed, certain conditions prevented delivery of MMS
  • Added, MEID support (included in BC04 MR)
  • Added, WLAN chipset enhancement (included in BC04 MR)
You can catch the update by hitting the link below. There are separate installers for Vista and XP, so make sure you grab the correct one.

You too can have WM6.1 on your BJI. I did, right before I upgraded. It worked great, but I wanted a larger screen.

I tried doing the update to 6.1 last night using the vista tool kit package. I backed up, and started the process, then my phone turned to a brick. Fail, fail, fail, download again. I uninstalled the tool kit and then re-installed. It started and then it said the vista package tool kit was not compatible with the Vista OS! Dead phone. I called Verizon and told them i did a hard reset because i was having problems with the phone, and it never came back to it’s normal working mode. They are sending me a new one overnight. Thank god for verizon.

In the event that anyone else experiences bricking action with the i760 after a faulty update, please consider the following: Failures and “download again” error messagaes are a clear indication of an interruption of the downloading process. Upon no response of the Samsung i760, Hold the Left Soft Key down (next to the CRL key) while resetting the device which will cause the device to by-pass any software integration. After which the device will revert back to default factory settings. You will lose any and all programs and settings that were installed. Lucky for you that you have a backup of the ROM – right? Don’t worry, whether you use Resco backup, Sprite backup, etc., the backup file while restore all of the programs and settings in 6.1 without any hiccups. The trick is to re-try to update the ROM before running to the nearest Verizon store.

I was excited to update to 6.1 until two days after I did. I also have problems accessing the memory card (especially if you have installed programs on it.) It also looses bluetooth settings after doing a soft reset (which most of us have to do daily.) Oh goodie, I can now see youtube on my device, I’d rather my memory card work and bluetooth remain stable!!!

samething happened to me., you took the story right out of my mouth. but i did some research and what happened to me, that wasnt clear, was a lot of ajustments you have to make to your phone and computer before starting update.
    1 turn off firewall
2 change data connections to through usb
3 it cant be a laptop and you have to plug it in through the back of the modem not the easy front ones…

try these steps and do it again

I did the 6.1 32 bit upgrade on vista home premium. Now I can’t sync my outlook ver 2002. After a long time talking to samsung I find that there is no rollback to older operating s/w. Additonally, in my case I just bought 2 760s and can’t sync but one phone to outlook on the same computer even if get it working on the upgraded one. By the way it works fine syncing with the phone that still has the original version of windows on it. It would be nice if they mentioned that stuff before you make the change.

now I have one un sync able phone and one that could work but it’s my wifes phone and does me no good.

my dell axim had a similar problem upgrading to windows 5.0 but they offered a utility to roll back the update.

    cuss, cuss, cuss…sorry
