i8510: Samsung Cooking up an 8 Megapixel S60 Beast?
All we can say is… Wow. Ok, obviously that’s not all we’re going to say but the latest Samsung handset making its way through the rumor mill seems way too good to be true. Apparently Samsung is working on a new S60 slider that, if it lives up to the specs, might make the Nokia N95 look like a kid’s toy. In fact forget the N95, this thing might just stomp all over the N96 as well. Seriously, look at these specs:
- 2.8-inch QVGA (240×320 pixels), 16m colors
- 8 megapixel camera with auto-focus, xenon flash (though it looks like LED in the image above) and 120 fps video recording
- UMTS with HSDPA support, WiFi, GPS, TV out, DivX support, dedicated 3D graphics chip
- Optical mouse (same as i780 and i900 Omnia)
- 1200 mAh battery
- 106.5×53.9×16.9 mm metal case
- 16 GB internal memory (possibly an 8 GB version as well)
Some people are reporting that the i8510 will run Feature Pack 1 while we’ve also read a few claims of FP2. Obviously we’re hoping for the latter but then again, if Samsung stays true to form none of this will matter for us here in the US. It seems like every time we see sweet high-end handset come out of Samsung it has a tri-band GSM antenna stuffed inside. Samsung! Please! Say it with us; “quaaaaaad-band”…

Nokia is also preparing an 8MP flagship for October-ish, so I wouldn’t get too excited yet.

120fps isn’t bad either. If it is tri-band and costs $800 though, it’s nothing anyone in the US needs to worry about.

120 fps video recording? How about a serious WTF or bullshit on that one?

i got a great idea to make samsung (and LG) for that matter make all their phones quad band for america. I’ve been doing it all along but i need all of ur help. it’s called BOYCOTTING every single samsung and lg phone no matter how cool. i LOOOOOOOOVE cellphones. in fact i came close to getting either the armani or one of the new ultrathin LG phones but i’ve fought the temptation because this is something bigger. its about respecting ALL AMERICANS AND OUR OPINIONS AND BUSINESS! i cant do it alone so come on guys and girls, help me out. and while ur at it, email them and let them know ur opinion. i’ve done it soooo many times they probably have a file on me, lol.

Trent: 120 fps @ QVGA is the same as 30 fps @ VGA, so nothing special nor new.

The standby screen on the phone is clearly FP2

And if the history will prove to repeat itself..this will be a triband with WCDMA 2100 only. If so - I will officialy puke at Samsung’s phones whenever I’ll see them. Sammy - make a splash by releasing a TRUE world phone - Quad GSM / Tri or Quad UMTS (and by Tri band UMTS I mean T-Mobile…not both of at&t’s )

Question remains, if samsung were to make this beast Quadband, Who would buy it outside this circle that follow websites like Engadget Mobile or BGR? Certainly, not the $199 iPhone crowd.
Samsung’s high end devices seem to have the same PR problem in the US that Nokia N-series has.

Isn’t it funny. All those suckers rushing out to get an iPhone, which has basic features (bar the touch screen interface). What would one rather have? A) a nice pretty looking phone with basic features and a 2MP camera or B) a Nokia or Samsung with cutting edge technology, 8MP camera, large drive space, super fast Internet, “cut and paste”, bluetooth support, MMS, etc.
