iPhone 2.0 Firmware Now Available!
The iPhone 3G will not go on sale until tomorrow and version 2.0 software isn’t yet available for “old school” iPhones either. Apple has still decided to move forward and release iTunes 7.7 complete with a live AppStore. Look but don’t touch! Wait a minute? What’s that? Uh oh, it looks like original iPhone owners are in for a treat as we’ve just received word the the 2.0 firmware is now live and available for download. Well we received word and a download link, that is. If you’ve decided to hold on to your OG iPhone, for nostalgia’s sake perhaps, it’s your lucky day. Hit the read link before Apple’s servers get hosed and start enjoying all of that exchange-rocking, legal app-supporting goodness right away.

Thanks Bill. No Worries no offense takin…Im not very computer literate at least with this kinda of stuff. I will try it when I get home.
Jim, anytime – same answer as all the other firmware releases.
Kevin – according to other sites they say it will not work for ipod touch.
Does anyone know if there will be a app made so that we can send and receive picture messages at last? I swear that is the only thing that bugs me about iphone
OK, I am just a moron but I can’t figure out how to install this thing. I have 7.7 and I’ve tried holding down “option” and clicking “check for updates”. I can browse the folder it downloaded but everything is grayed out and I can’t click on anything. What am I doing wrong?
Toni, i’m having the same problem, how’d you figure it out? i keep getting the iPhone1,2_2 folder after the download completes. simply adding .ipsw to the end of the folder doesn’t seem to solve the problem. ideas?
How did you get the ipsw after the download? i also see only a folder.
i loaded it, it said it loaded and i restored it. but everything looks the same. no search for contacts, no new calculator. what the hell…..
i also just purchased the monkeyball game but how the heck to you get onto the phone. and it still says my version is 1.1.4! IM FRUSTRATED.
Me too, how do you get past the grey area’s? someone explain please!!!
i have an unlocked/jailbroken phone and im afaraid to try it. seems pretty cool though.
Can any body confirm if synching to the exchange contacts wipes out personal contacts? This was reported by one of the early reviewers.
MSTR,
If you sync your iPhone before you update, you can do a restore right after the update and get all of your info back.
Also, everyone having problems getting the ipsw file. USE FIREFOX #1, click on the read link and Ctrl-Click (Mac) or Alt-Click (Winblows) the read link and “save link as”. Make sure the extension is .ipsw
That’s it.
Also, BACKUP YOUR PHONE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO UPGRADE OR WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW WHEN THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE COMES TO iTUNES. You are taking a risk, doing the upgrade this way. If you are not comfortable with what you are doing, please do not attempt it.
I just synced my iphone with itunes (I had a jailbroken phone) and I did the 2.0 RESTORE, not UPDATE (I wanted it clean for the 2.0 so I could test it fully with what Apple has to offer). I then synced the phone with itunes, and everything is back (contacts, emails, etc). You will lose your SMS messages and your photos you have taken. You can sync your photos beforehand using Picasa or just copy them over to the computer if you like. Not sure if there is a way to back up the SMS messages. Anyway, all is well. Testing out some of the new appstore stuff now. As for those of you having problems finding the ipsw on your Mac… well… it’s a Mac…
HAD to say it!
I spoke too soon. If you sync your iphone to itunes, then RESTORE the 2.0 ipsw, then when it asks you if it’s a new phone or if you want to restore from your previous version, RESTORE, even if it was jailbroken. ALL of your information returns, INCLUDING photos, SMS, email, contacts, etc. Obviously none of your jailbreak stuff returns, but you have all of you true Apple approved stuff in 2.0. YAY!
Hey Ron, Did this upgrade work for your iTouch? I just tried this process and see nothing different. Still no way to move my downloaded apps into my iTouch.
just delete the .zip from the file name and it will work. It takes awhile but it works fine. 2.0 here with apps installed, no problems.
change the file extension and it will not be grayed out.
I’m guessing the people with the folder are getting that because you / your computer is trying to unzip the file. cant do that -
Tried loading it on my touch. Totally botched it. Lost the software update from last year. Restoring as we speak. BLAH!!!
2.0 rules! Exchange is working and my Blackberry is now officially a paper weight
What the hell. Is MMS really THAT hard to do? I mean, it’s on freakin’ $50 phones… why the hell is it not on a freakin’ iPhone????!!!! BAH!!!! Not cut and paste, either, so if anyone has ever received an MMS on their iphone, and tried to log into viewmymessage.com and tried to bounce back and forth from SMS to Safari, it’s RIDICULOUS!!!! Come on, Cupertino, this is just getting silly at this point.
Tima its not for the touch….
not this download atleast.
and other sites are reporting they have already jailbroken / unlicked with 2.0 so it did not take them long.
Bill Grove, why all the anger? you should have known for the last few months that MMS was not a part of this.
unlocked – sp.
question…i downloaded the file from the read link and it gave me a folder…i opened the folder and dragged the dmg file onto my desktop but if i cant use the file without a password?
what am i doing wrong ?
got it!!!
