MobileMe to go live between 6PM-12AM tomorrow

Those of you that have been patiently waiting for Apple’s new hosted PIM service to go online can begin rejoicing. The company has updated their .Mac status page, indicating that MobileMe will go live for new and current subscribers sometime between 6PM and 12AM on July 9th. During that maintenance window, Apple will be taking down their .Mac service, bringing to a close an era of mediocre service that will hopefully be replaced by the company’s “exchange for the rest of us” MobileMe. While we here at BGR are a bit more excited about iPhone 2.0’s legitimate Exchange implementation, we know more than a few of you are ready to jump on board with MobileMe’s push email, contact and calendar syncing. Let us know how your first encounter with the new service goes, but for our money, you’d be better off with a hosted exchange solution of your choosing. Just sayin’…

If you have the ability to host your own exchange service, by all means it would be superior because you have more control over it; however you have to be more responsible for it. For the average user, setting up their own service, getting the licenses, and constantly maintaining it would be too much work, time, and money. I am technically able and competent to run my own exchange service if I desire, but I have better things to do with my limited free time. I did signed up for it because it meets my needs. Google services has for the most part allow me to do what I want, but being able to sync between my work computer (PC), home computer, and still have access to a web interface when I am at neither. Having my parents on another family account will allow me to fix their technical issues remotely (they are 3000 miles away). Etc. I’m happy Apple has decided to step up their services.

    @ Mel

Totally agree. No hassle to manage any of MobileMe’s services remotely unlike Exchange, and god forbid dedicated Exchange and dedicated BES like me. Ugh.

Please don’t make me list all our exclusives. Please. It would take around 4 months to do so.

I wonder if someone will make an App for WinMo so MobileMe users with a WinMo device can utilize the push functions.

Seriously, I am not kidding. I use WinMo because I can’t use the iPhone day-to-day. The “virtual” keyboard is virtually useless. I can type email and tests at blistering speeds on my Q9…

Well on a cost basis Mobile Me is cheaper/better. AT&T wants an extra $15mo. for Exchange support in addition to the $10 data hike? bad idea money grubbers. Mobile Me will only run you $8.25 mo. plus 20GB storage.

AT&T wants $15/month more for BUSINESS customers, not for Exchange support. You can do Exchange with the $30/month plan. They charge extra for business customers because business customers generally use more data than regular customers. The only way you have to pay the extra $15/month is if your AT&T account is a business account that your company pays for.

I’m not going to dump my hosted exchange just yet (4Smartphone) but I am going to try the 60 day trial of MobileMe.

First off, when 4Smartphone went to Exchange 2007, they raised their price to $10.95/month. So MobileMe is over $30 cheaper. Second, my I now use a Mac most of the time, and Entourage is terrible, and Exchange support in Mail.app is lackluster at best.

Of course, MobileMe isn’t exactly getting off to the best start, since it was supposed to be up and ready to go 2 hours ago.

Well Mobile me is not working yet. Can’t even use the old mac.com. Do you have an update on when this thing might really be up and working?
