Official referee with the whistle AT&T iPhone pricing, there will be a no contract price!

caption here

There’s been a ton of confusion over the handset pricing on Apple’s iPhone 3G on AT&T. Stevie announced they’d go for $199 and $299 for the 8GB and 16GB models, but obviously that’s a subsidized price. We just got a hold of the final pricing for the iPhone 3G, and we even have a no-contract price for you! Boy, you’re not going to be happy, though. Here’s the breakdown:

  • iPhone 3G will be available for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. These prices require two-year contracts and are available to the following customers:
  • iPhone customers who purchased before July 11
  • Customers activating a new line with AT&T
  • Current AT&T customers who are eligible, at the time of purchase, for an upgrade discount
  • Existing AT&T customers who are not currently eligible for an upgrade discount can purchase iPhone 3G for $399 for the 8GB model or $499 for the 16GB model. Both options require a new two-year service agreement.
  • Here’s the interesting part… “ In the future, AT&T will offer a no-contract-required option for $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB).”

Looks like after the initial launch period, you will indeed be able to mosey on in and pay for an iPhone without dealing with a wireless contract at the time of purchase. Let the unlocking games begin!

Existing AT&T customers really get the BOHICA treatment, huh?

My wife has a first gen iphone and she wants to keep it. I want to get a 3G iphone. Can I use her upgrade discount to buy the phone but put my number on it? Or is this still unclear? Everything I have read implies that if you do this, it needs to be programmed with her number. thanks

So who would pay the non-contract price ($699/799) when you can buy it on the 2-year contract ($199/299) and pay the $175 ETF?

so does this mean that if a friend of mine has the original iphone with legitimate contract; she can go in and get the 3g one for 199 then give it to me and she can revert her plan back to the $20 a month one and i would have a 3g iphone?

Ummm….BG…this info was out there last week and ain’t “news” as such. Long holiday weekend for ya? I hope you don’t get excited about the orgo-farmers who are first-in-liners in NYC as “news” next…

Still love the site, of course!

i love the way they have the posters in the stores that say ‘twice as fast’ ‘half the price’ and there isn’t 3G for 100 miles around…

Why are people complaining? Price seems good –get a subsidized phone in return for a two year contract. I do wish they would give us the phone for free (like O2) but whatever. Noncontract prices are about what the iphone cost originally — and only a little bit more than an unlocked n95.

Good thing I qualify for the discount pricing! It looks like they want to make back all the money they pay Apple with the no contract pricing, and people without at&t will pay.

Charlie, Amazon were selling brand new BLACK Nokia N82s for less than $400 just a few weeks back…

$699 is not “only a little bit” more than the N95.

Old, old, old information. I like reading BGR generally, but a re-hash of information that has been widely publicized elsewhere is not “reporting”.
