Telstra is similar to Rogers where it charges through the roof for what it calls a ‘premium service’. Their iPhone plan starts on a $35 plan with an upfront payment and only 5Mb worth of data. 5 megabytes. To have a Gb you need to pay over $100.

Optus (which is the telco that was mentioned previously) is doing so well for competition here, although the incumbent is yet to follow as they still have a lot of people signing up.

At the end of the day, if a corporation has no customers, they will modify their rates. It all boils down to user knowledge and education on what a fair go really is.

A family member in charge of the cell phone section at Rogers has been told that there will be a total of 2,000 iPhones for the entirety of Canada.

Hence, not all stores will be carrying them or very few, on the release date.

If half of the petitioners did this, lets assume their current monthly bills are about $60, if they reduce it to $20. Thats a monthly loss for Rogers of about $40. 25, 000 (half the petitioners) x $40 = $1, 000, 000. Not only will they lose $6, 000, 000 over the course of the next 6 months but a large decrease in their subscribers ARPU will be impacted.

Plus if everyone cancels in Dec/Jan, their churn will look brutal at a key time.

Is my thinking too simple? But with most of these things, people just like to bitch but won’t do whats necessary to exact any change, so any plans like these (hairbrained or otherwise) wouldn’t get off the ground.

No, the company’s profitabiltiy determine shareholder interest and therefor share price. Investors don’t buy the stock because they like the logo.

Ted Rogers does own the company (do your research if the fact that the company is called rogers isn’t enough for you) The kind of shares that you I can be are not the same as the one’s that Ted owns.

Rogers made 10 Billion dollars in 2007, 53% of which came from wireless business.

Also, apple doesn’t have a mafia style control over shipping companies. they can’t redirect our stock to Europe to try and get Rogers to change plans, then just tell the ship to turn around. This style of pressure, no matter how its looked at, would end up costing apple thousands of extra dollars.

Face it guys this is just a lame rumor. If apple is going to do anything it will be to wait out Rogers first release and see how it goes. This phone isn’t even launched yet. We don’t actually know if their sales are going to be effected largely by the petition. I mean lets be honest, the only reason those 40,000 people took the time to sign it was because at the end of the day they REALLY want an iPhone. How many of them will ACTUALLY hold out?

IF sales are minimal, and they can directly relate it to the public out cry for data costs THEN they will pressure Rogers before they send their next stock shipment. Lets not forget Apple signed a contract with Rogers to supply these Phones, the can’t just cut Rogers off.

I know everyone loves apple and in most peoples eyes they can do no wrong, but realistically Rogers probably proposed these prices to apple before they signed the contract.

Don’t worry to much though, Telus and bell now have unlimited Data plans, and its offered on every other smart phone rogers carries appart from the iPhone (since that is the only one rogers has exclusively). As soon as the initial hype dies down, Rogers will offer unlimited data to stay competitive with their entire product line. Remember, Rogers can’t survive off of just one phone, no matter HOW popular it is!!

Last time I looked, share prices did not dictate a company’s real world profitability.

Just because the shareholders have money, doesn’t mean the company is profitable. Ted may be the CEO of the company, but that does not mean he owns it – the majority shareholder do. Plus, his money is HIS money, not Rogers’. Also, that article did not specify whether *only* his Rogers stock increased, or whether his whole portfolio appreciated.

Not to say Rogers isn’t profitable…. just pointing out the error of your assumption. IE. if I owned Rogers stock, I’d be rich too.

Rogers has probably agreed to sell X amount of iPhones in Canada. Apple has to agree to provide them with X amount. Rogers could sue Apple for a breech of contract, supplying Y amount of phones.

Unless we Canuck’s vote with our wallet, and choose not to buy this from Rogers nothing is going to change. Really interesting the rates from Bell & Telus. They both suck equally, but I would have to lean towards Bell for my monies worth.

Why would the government interfere with Rogers ? The more Rogers charges, the more tax they get. Kind of like biting the hand that feeds.

I would like to hope that Jesus Jobs can help us.

Don’t bank on it though.
