Lines already forming at NYC Apple store for iPhone 3G?

Yeah, the answer would appear to be “Yes!” Roughly 1 week before the new iPhone 3G becomes available, there seems to be a line forming in front of the 5th Avenue Apple Store. The collection of folks has formed with the specific intention of breaking the world record for longest time waiting in line. If you ask us, it’s not the most effective use of 7 days of your life, but if breaking obscure and meaningless records is your thing, you might want to jog down and latch on to this gravy train. Given the slightly diminished demand for the new iPhone relative to last year’s bum rush, coupled with Apple’s tendency to meet initial consumer demand for new products, we don’t think you’ll need to hit the line more than 30 minutes or so before the doors open to secure a handset on the 11th, but extreme measures never hurt a soul, right? Unless you’re an infant waiting in line because you parents forced you so you could break the above meaningless world record.

Uhhhh …. no. I had friends that waiting for hours in the initial launch of the first iPhone. Most people trade shifts with their friends. When I visited There were always people being switched out. I’m sure a few are there for a week though … others trade time with friends to keep their spot.

No. It would never happen with a WinMo phone for one simple reason. Its simply not as popular. There has never been as much demand for a WinMo phone. When the first gen iPhone released people waited in line the same way .. only it was a $599 price tag THEN. People that pay $599 for a phone most certainly work, and there were lots of them that did just that. If there was a $599 WinMo phone there would most certainly NOT be this kind of demand for it. Think about this … How many apps do you see are meant to COVER UP the ugly winmo interface? TONS. And how many of those try to mimic the iPhone interface? Tons? Enough said. Most people hate the winmo interface as evidence by everyone trying to cover it up. its crap .. its clunky .. its ugly .. and not geared for a touch device.

Galvatron, very selective in your history aren’t you? Why not mention the great depression? or all the meltdown of capitalist south American countries in the past 40 years?

Russia is now a capitalist based economy and it created a corrupt oligarchy, just like in the US. You are ruled by a dictatorship of the elite yet your too blind to see, because of all the symbolic bs rhetoric that is being force fed down your throat.

Time does not change the fact you are a nation built on genocide and war. A nation that still to this day lives off of war and exploitation.

We all know they deserve it.

    or…

It could be that there are many, many models of windows mobile phones to choose from. They don’t release just 1 a year.

Last I checked, there were like 4 times as many windows mobile phones sold last year compared to the iPhone.

What shows that us WinMo guys are smarter… we pre-order them and they show up at our door on release day.

Hey Ben, you bastion of smugness, what country are you from? No matter how you answer that question, I wouldn’t trade places with you. Whatever your answer, no matter what country you name, I’ll have plenty to say about it. Either your country sucks in innumerable ways or your hands aren’t so clean historically either.

This is a tech site. I have no interest in reading your condescending, preachy insults about my country and by extension, me.

Why are people always amazed at people who wait in line for stuff like this? People do it for PS3 games, pro sports tickets, star wars premiers, book signings, concert tickets, Broadway show tickets…and much more. Who cares that they wait?

I don’t get all the iphone hype, its just a phone with a touch screen. Its not the fastest phone, its not the most reliable phone, its not the securest phone. Its a touch screen with an eye catching interface. I have a ipod touch, which is basically just like the iphone and i dont know how these people type on that keyboard.

The blackberry may not look the coolest, it may not have a “cool” media application. or other things to mess around with while you’re on the unemployment line or hanging out in your parents basement, but its functionality is superior to the iphone.

Then again, people buy phones for how they fit with their day to day lives. So i can understand the smelly iphone junkies that are waiting on that line.

@ Max (not Ben, sorry Ben)

Swiss?? A swiss miss is criticizing the great power in the world? You don’t have the gravity in this arena to be taken seriously. Now I’m not so annoyed. On the global stage switzerland is irrelevant. It suffers from a severe inferiority complex and why not? Their greatest claim to fame is the cuckoo clock. If you want to criticze our chocolate, have at it; it sucks compared to Lindt and the rest.

USA foreign policy *has* been imperialistic. Like England, Germany, France, China, Japan, etc., etc. Not the Swiss, of course, who’ve sat out every war since the 1600s. I neither applaud nor condemn that. It is what it is.

Expansionist ass kicking aside, there’s a LOT that’s great about the US but I’m not going into it. Res ipsa loquitur.

Swiss. Sideliners. Chocolate. Alps. Nice. But of no consequence or moment historically or modernly.

It’s poor form, not to mention cowardly, to sit behind a computer and insult a country on its birthday no less, on a tech site! We just want to talk about gadgets. Not politics, morals, or philosophy.

Sorry I lost my temper there.

    @McHale

Only because of the sheer numbers of WinMo phones sold across ALL carriers. iPhone is sold by one carrier, and there is one of them. Still look at its popularity. Tell me … who out there tries to mimic the WinMo interface to put on their phones? Nobody. Most people out there think WinMo interface is ugly and clunky, which it is. How many projects FOR WinMo tries to mimic features on an iPhone? Countless. THAT is the mark of innovation … when everyone tries to mimic what you have done. WinMo adds a new feature? Absolutely nobody will care … and it will not generate a global buzz. It will WITHIN the community. Apple releases iPhone or announces something new? The entire world hears the buzz. You tell me which is more popular in most peoples eyes.

i just passed by the apple store on 5th avenue and wow! there’s a few peoples chairs and belongings but they are not in them. there is also a huge sign that says waitingforapples.com. So I can validate the authenticity of this image. Also the apple store is jammed packed at lunchtime on normal days, i’d hate to see it friday. I think the iPhone will sell out within one hour.
