AT&T Dishes iPhone 3G Info

AT&T has just posted a whole bunch of official iPhone 3G info on its site this morning as it prepares for the hoards of people waiting to snag the new Apple handset on July 11. First and foremost is the announcement that the iPhone 3G will be available for sale at 8:00 am next Friday. Wait, where have we heard that before? We’re guessing there are going to be some pretty early lines forming this year. Next comes the official plan pricing which goes as follows:

AT&T Nation (unlimited data included)

  • $69.99 - 450 anytime minutes, 45¢ each addtl minute, 5,000 night / weekend minutes
  • $89.99 - 900 anytime minutes, 40¢ each addtl minute, unlimited night / weekend minutes
  • $109.99 - 1,350 anytime minutes, 35¢ each addtl minute, unlimited night / weekend minutes
  • $129.99 - Unlimited minutes

AT&T FamilyTalk (includes 2 lines, unlimited data & night / weekend minutes, $39.99 each additional line)

  • $129.99 - 700 anytime minutes, 45¢ each addtl minute
  • $149.99 - 1,400 anytime minutes, 40¢ each addtl minute
  • $169.99 - 2,100 anytime minutes, 35¢ each addtl minute
  • $209.99 - 3,000 anytime minutes, 25¢ each addtl minute
  • $259.99 - 4,000 anytime minutes, 20¢ each addtl minute
  • $359.99 - 6,000 anytime minutes, 20¢ each addtl minute
  • $259.99 - Unlimited minutes ($129.99 each additional line)

Add Text Plan

  • $5 - 200 messages per month (individual plan)
  • $15 - 1,500 messages per month (individual plan)
  • $20 - Unlimited messages (individual plan)
  • $30 - Unlimited messages (FamilyTalk plan)
  • 20¢ per message if no plan is selected

Beyond all that, the contract price points were announced by Stevo at WWDC so there’s no news there. AT&T customers who aren’t eligible for an upgrade will pay a $200 premium ($399.99 for the 8 GB and $499 for the 16 GB) so the $200 subsidy rumor was indeed spot on. There is also an interesting note found on the site: “Coming soon, AT&T will offer a no-commitment option of $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB.” Re-he-healy?

What is a “no commitment offer? Does that mean, “to use on ANY network?” ..??? Thats positively ambiguous, but it’d be nice if my inerpretation is accurate, as ultimately, whether sold directly from or by, tmobile would then be allowed to have support for the phone that are specific to it: graphic vm … where you can choose to hear them selectively on the UI.

Any word on a TrackID like feature? Or Java program?

I can’t wait to see the idiots line up to buy this phone. If anyone recalls the last iPhone release we know there will be plenty and I think there won’t be as many people going for this phone initially. I think some will wait to see if it really lives up to the hype others are weary of another price drop 2 months after it is out.

Either way Apple is not in the Nintendo game of holding back inventory, they want everyone to get their product as soon as possible so it will be great to see the idiots taking time off work or better yet paying someone to wait in line for them for a phone you can get anytime you want.

I’m sure no commitment means no 2-year contract.

I am so glad I have a good cheap Blackberry plan…Looking at the canadian rates makes me glad I’m in the states (as a Canadian BTW…)
The rates are much higher for the iPhone than any other phone I’ve seen..even Blackberry.
    Lets do the math:
The plans are over priced by $30. The catch is…they included the Data and priced it just like the Blackberry…hmmm, so data is not an option for this phone.

P.S.: Am I the only one here that is thinking that a phone review has anything in it but the actual phone quality? which is the main purpose..

I believe the ETF is still $175 so after the fist month you can pay that fee and keep your iphone with no contract.. i’m guessing? so it’d work out to $199 + $175 = $374 for an 8GB vs $599.. all we need now are some mac hackers to jailbreak’em…

Jailbreak and unlock and use it where? on T-mobile, whose UMTS runs on a different band than AT&T (and likely not supported by the iPhone)?

Apple threw up the biggest brick with that 5-year commitment to ATT. In five years, the rest of the industry will have comparable offerings (if not already) not to mention by then the only people left to “illa” over the phone will be fanboys. How many iPhones would be in the market right now if not for exclusivity?

Such a bummer for Apple and the rest of the mobile handset community that the 5-year commit will keep the handset out of the hands of the rest of the U.S. mobile market. However, prices like the above certainly take the shine off the device.

This is an easy fix. If you have a line that is upgradable, congratulations you have nothing to worry about. If you want to buy it unlocked and use it overseas or on tmobile then that is the person who will get effed. The only reason the price of the no contract phone is so it will be translated to the buyer of the phone. the people who will sell them unlocked with ultimately transfer the price increase to the buyer so their margins will stay unaffected. it will make the person buying the phone unlocked think twice about ebay and probably walk into a att store and buy it for 200.
    what do you guys think?

    just a thought
$200 for the 8gb + $175 early termination + $75 for the lowest voice plus data and $5 text package + $36 dollar activation fee=$486 thats before taxes. so this should quell the “buy it and cancel” idea

Actually, it’s 199+170 (drops $5 every month)+70 (one month of service) +36 (activation if new)=475. Still less, just less less.

Amir, the pricing looks like it’s exactly in line with AT&T’s 3G Smartphone plans. Blackberry may be cheaper but AFAIK, they’re not 3G right?

What a bunch of thieves. 20 cents for a text message. All the carriers suck, but AT&T has got to be the worst.

They still haven’t coupled texting onto the plans?!?!?! Apple + ATT + crappy cell phone = massive FAIL. When the hell did any plan cost that much? This is outrageous but if I were to ever buy one of these they wouldn’t dare mess with my plan.

Send Apple an email complaining about the cost of text-messageing with the iPhone. (20 cents to send and receive is obnoxious).

All that money for a phone tha has no MMS capabilities. You also can’t have your own ring tones. I will stick with my Treo 755p with Sprint. I have the SERO plan and I pay $30 a month for 500 minutes,Unlimited night and weekend minutes,Unlimited mobile to mobile,Unlimited WEB and Email and last but not least Unlimited texting and MMS. Yea I know Sprint isn’t that great, but for the price who cares. All you idiots go ahead and pay $70+fees and taxes+$5 for only 200 text messages.

If they can sell an unlocked, no commitment iPhone 3G 16GB at $699 they’re in the business in Europe too. Still, Vodafone Italy announced 569 euro for prepaid so about $899 (so not quite $699). That is a little too expensive, but still comparable as price probably with the upcoming Nokia N96 (16GB, far better foto/video camera, DVB-H, radio, modem but smaller screen and no touch) and with the HTC Diamond (cheaper but only 4GB, higher resolution but stylus input for text).
