BlackBerry BIS 2.5 presentation, OS 4.5 not coming ’til September!
By now you all have heard that BlackBerry BIS 2.5 is rolling out to U.S. carriers on June 29th. Heck, there’s even going to be some downtime. But, maybe that isn’t enough? Maybe you’d like more information. We’ve definitely got you covered in that area. We just got a hold of this presentation outlining BIS 2.5 and all the various features. The sad part? As some of you know, all the sexy stuff requires BlackBerry OS 4.5 which according to the presentation will not be available until September. That’s not to say some of you aren’t running it already, but September guys? For reals? Head on over to the gallery to check it out for yourself, but we’ll break down the more interesting stuff here for all you lazy bums:
- You can save attachments including audio and video formats.
- Full list of supported downloadable attachments are: .doc, .ppt., .xls, .wpd, .txt, .html, .pdf, .zip, and the aforementioned audio / video formats.
- File size of attachments is limited to 3MB.
- The 4.5 OS will be “available for all BlackBerry’s in September.” This includes the 8100, 8800, 8820, 8300, 8310, 8120, and the 8110. No 8320 love?
- “If a BlackBerry launches before September, it will have 4.5 software.”

What about the CDMA versions? 8830, 8130, and 8330? I suppose since the the Thunder is an upcoming release, it will have the new OS, but again, what about the other VZW models?

I am guessing that since the 8320 isn’t getting it the 8330 isn’t either? Boo! I was one day away from getting a curve. Do you think this warrants a change in plans?

Huh, but the 8300 and 8310 are listed. That is weird. Anyone have any idea if the 8330 will get the update or not?

Yes, I noticed there were no xx30 versions listed too. However, I just downloaded a tried a beta os for my verizon 8830, which, while is was indeed a 4.5 build, it was horribly buggy and unstable.
So, while I think 4.5 will be coming to CDMA, god only knows when.

I am trying really hard to remain a loyal Tmobile customer, but unless they have something up their sleeve to surprise me, they have really screwed the pooch on this one. At LEAST another 4-6 months for the Bold and no 4.5 upgrade for the Curve (8320). The 3-G less Javelin is basically a Curve with a new OS and case…like putting lipstick on a pig! With all the carriers offering unlimited plans for $99, what is the incentive to stick around? I love UMA for when I travel internationally, but it just isn’t worth being left in the dust at every turn!

There are at least three 4.5 releases for the 8320 floating around, as mentioned some even officially released by providers, just upgrade to that and enjoy.
TMO support didn’t complain that I was running a higher version than their’s, if that is your concern.

the 8320 4.5 os is fine, and does have UMA support. make sure you get the latest build
4.5.0.44
the .37 fries your sim card so make sure you dont get that one. otherwise the .18 and the .44 build are pretty stable for me and i have had them for days. the .18 has a memory issue though but nothing that messes up the device.
it just really upsets me that they wouldnt be giving out a 4.5 for the 8320 in the US. its almost if they want us to forcibly buy the javelin or bold. well i dont want either so they are screwed. i am staying with my curve for as long as it lives. and i take pretty good care of it.

WTF you guys talking about. I’ll make a presentation that says 5.0 is coming in September too, but the fact is 4.5 is here for the Curve aka 8310. So to me, that means it’s here.

I’ve been running 4.5 on my old trusty 8700 (AT&T) for 2-3 weeks now. The first week was sadness but with a LOT of browser tweaks I’m functional now. A few of my 3rd party apps are either flaky (google mail/maps) or no longer work (berrysearch, Yahoo Go) but the overall email experience is much better. No HTML email yet (bis 2.5?) but the presentation and even the speed seems to have improved. I’m noticing new little touches all the time.

while there were reports of SIMs frying, I have been running .37 without anything going up in smoke.
Yes the google maps app does not work unless you jump through some hoops but hey, it is a beta OS, can’t expect every third party app to release an upgrade just cause the OS was leaked. I am sure they will have an update soon.
RoseGold, search blackberryforums or crackberry for the file names and just google those, plenty of Rapidhare and torrent links to be found. Not to mention the official releases from a couple providers.
download, install, delete vendor.xml, launch DM, plug in BB, done.

Everything you are all saying is true regarding 4.5 “floating around” for the 8320. BUT, they are all still betas, and unsupported if you are not an authorized beta tester. I am comlaining that TMobile’s last release for the 8320 was 4.2, and from this story, it doesn’t appear that they are going to release 4.5 any time soon for the 8320. I always run beta software, but that doesn’t mean its supported by my carrier, and certainly not by RIM. Just because I speed too, doesn’t mean Mr. Policeman is going to buy my story that I have to go to the bathroom and the car can go 155 mph.

I’m so confused.
Okay, so this weekend it took me about 4 hours to upgrade my 8320 to 4.5.0.10 (and it works just fine thus far) and now you’re telling me I have to hunt for version 4.5.0.37 all so that I can receive HTML email?!?!?!? there’s got to be an easier way!!!!
