LG Dare Now Available on Verizon Wireless
In yesterday’s post about the Samsung Instinct, we semi jokingly suggested that the Instinct was Sprint’s attempt to keep customers from jumping ship come July 11th. Apparently some readers were offended by the allegation and here at BGR we try not to make the same mistake twice. So with regards to Verizon’s newly-released LG Dare we’re going to keep this post serious. We will not say that like the Instinct, the Dare is Verizon’s attempt to wrangle would-be ship jumpers with a sleek touch-only handset. We will not make jokes about the familiar form factor or metal accents. No, dear friends, we will not say things like Verizon higher-ups would set their LG distribution contracts ablaze if it would result in even the slightest possibility of Apple cranking out an iPhone EV-DO. We’re better than that. In fact, we won’t even mention the iPhone a single time in this post. Nope, not one iPhone reference. So the LG Dare is now available for Verizon Wireless customers looking for some touchy goodness. Proximity sensor, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, 3.2 megapixel camera, EV-DO Rev A, HTML web browser; the Dare has all the goodies you can handle. Maybe. A click on the read link, $199 and a 2-year contract will get you in the door. Definitely a good option for the “keepin it real” crowd still paying homage to the CDMA networks of our fathers. Wait, was that a joke? Crap.

I’ve been out of contract for months and have been watching the forthcoming phones with great anticipation. After much review and debate, I have all but decided a switch to Verizon and the Dare are in order. Yep, even over the soon to be released iPhone 3G and the cheaper Instinct. Why? More than anything, the network.
AT&T has piss poor 3G coverage, and where it is available around me it is spotty at best. And the iPhone still lacks significant features and specs that can be found on almost any other phone on the market. And while the Instinct is a decent phone, Sprint’s network in my area is an absolute joke. What is the point of owning a cell phone if you can’t even make a call on it?
So within a month, I’ll be locking myself into a 2 year contract with Verizon.

keep in mind verizon has a 5 gig data cap and helps the feds spy on you domesticly

The LG proprietary UIs always suck. I recomend getting the glide (croix) on verizon if you want to go to that network, at least it keeps most of the interface from the GSM version, just slowed down and with dumb icons that coud likely be remedied with a reflash of the original Croix firmware.

are you kidding me? no one fking cares about this sh!t… post the new rogers iphone plans from rogers.com

A couple things to keep in mind, BG, when genuflecting for Mr. Jobs, et al…
1) the Dare’s camera puts the iPhone’s camera to shame with a quickness.
2) Verizon’s 3G coverage puts At&t’s to shame now. With Alltel merged to VZW, At&t will be lucky to catch up in coverage by 2011. It may be the “network of our fathers,” but it’s still bigger and (mostly) faster.
3) the 3G iPhone has an enhanced feature set for corporate users, but it still isn’t a corporate device in the way a Blackberry is - specifically because it lack the granular level of device management that BES provides. In this way, Verizon is smart to compete with the iPhone on the level of a “pro-sumer” class device, rather than a corporate device. Of course, that’s bascially what the Blackberry 9500 will be for…
4) Data services are cheaper on Verizon for essentially the same feature set (and you get EVDO Rev A upload speeds on the Dare - why no full HSPA on the iPhone?)
So there you have it, a decidedly non-fanboy assesment of the inevitable non-comparison comparison.

3.2mp camera that can record at 120 fps. i care

Zach, well said, I appreciate the laughs at work. Either way, the phone sounds decent, but it still won’t match the marketing machine that is the iPhone. Marketing is so underrated it’s incredible.

Thankfully a picture is worth a thousand words.
Since obviously the description of the phone is condensed to a sentence and a half, and the rest mocks those same users that said enough is enough.
I guess kicking someone when they say it hurts, and is no longer funny, is a cool thing to do.
Overall and unimaginative and uninformative post on the launch of what appears to be a nice phone, as compared to 90% of currently available phones.
Apparently there is only one comparison that can be made here, and only one segment of BGR readers to make fun of.

Hey it just occurred to me its the 80/20 rule, lets make fun of the 20% so the 80% are happy.
Well done!

All this iPhone stuff boggles. Yes, AT&T scored a major win with the iPhone. and it is a nice phone for what it offers (mostly aesthetics, but we are a shallow society, aren’t we).
But from a running your business standpoint…AT&T bit what VZW wouldn’t chew on, and that was the revenue sharing, and now, having to be raped by Apple when subsidizing the equipment.
AT&T has had the upperhand in total base thus far, but their churn, although coming down, remains higher, their ARPU is lower and their network and customer service is constantly behind VZW’s overall network and quality and availability.
Finally, it’s all a waiting game. Eventually when everyone rolls LTE out, and VZW opens their network, eventually, there will be an iPhone for everyone…
So apple fanboys, fret not, eventually the love will spread. AT&T fanboys…uhm…good luck with that. VZW Haters..I mean, you make some good points

Galvatron,
What makes you think that other networks haven’t done the same thing as VZW, and just haven’t been named publicly. I read a law suit that named all of the carriers for doing the same eaxct thing.
BTW, I think all carriers have some kind of cap on data usage.

most carriers have the 5GB data cap. except tmobile but hey maybe they do maybe they dont. i dont see how someone can get 5GB of data over edge though

Just like always, Galvatron doesn’t know what he is talking about. 5gig cap is on broadband service. “Verizon Wireless helps the feds spy on you” - Proof please?!

WOW. It finally happened. After enjoying your website for a long time, BoyGenius i gotta say: You are full of shit! Talking about CDMA like it was inferior to GSM when its the complete opposite with reason for comparison. You must wear your Dad’s Underoos that have GSM splashed all over them. WOW, absolutely ridiculous.

Galvatron,
What makes you think that none of the other carriers have done the same and just haven’t been barraded publicly?
I have seen lawsuits filed that named most of the other carriers for doing the same.
As per the data cap, most carriers have a data cap. And if they don’t already, they will eventually.

Its very easy to decide what phone and provider to use. ATT and iPhone for a mac user/infotainment consumer in a 3G covg area.
Vzw and BB for biz user and any other phone for a PC user.
Nothing radical will change until the new networks are rolled out so a 2 year contract is not a hindrance at this time.
ATT: move here if you want to sacrifice covg for a device.
Vzw if covg is most important and device is secondary.

Sad that its GSM counterpart, the Viewty, has a 5MP camera and has been out for the months. Then again, the Dare is cheap, and that seems to be mean everything in the States.

Personally, I think the touchscreen is impressive: on par with ipod touch technology. And that’s the only review that’s even been remotely negative about the touchscreen

I was in a verizon store before I cancelled with them and moved to an iphone, a big fat verizon sales person saw my iphone and told me “o we passed up on the iphone we didn’t want it” Then she told me to check out the LG voyager and how much better it was. Nuff said….
Now this LG is out to try and compete with the iphone again. Let’s face it, every carrier wished they had the iphone. I am no fan boy, back on a BB bc I am a heavy email user. I wonder if they are rolling this LG out in 72 countries? Hmmmmm
GSM=90% World use
