Samsung Instinct Selling Like Hotcakes; Relatively Speaking

While sales figures were wisely omitted from Sprint’s press release, it has announced today that the Samsung Instinct is the fastest-selling EVDO-equipped handset Sprint has ever offered. Apparently the Instinct is so desirable in fact, that many Sprint locations have run out of stock. All things considered it is a nice handset supporting just about every service Sprint has to offer. The nice big touchscreen, and familiar form factor don’t hurt either. John Garcia, President of Sprint’s Wireless Division had this to say:

“We had high expectations going into the launch so our initial order to Samsung was the largest for any Sprint EVDO handset to date. The strong early response tells us that wireless customers recognize Instinct as a highly-innovative and convenient touch-screen device combined with the fast speeds available on the largest national mobile broadband network. In the first few days of availability, many Instinct devices were purchased by existing customers upgrading their wireless device - we thank our customers for their endorsement of this device, our Simply Everything pricing plan and our company.”

So what exactly do the Instinct’s record sales tell us? People bound to Sprint wish they could get an iPhone.

Nice phone for those who choose to use Sprint’s service. I’d rather have the Mogul with some WM action. But to each their own.

BGR needs some non-iphone fanbois. Maybe people were looking for a phone that could do video…

I was one of those that got the first Instinct phones out. I am still trying to figure out if I “need” this thing. I do admit that the creature is slowly growing on me as I get constant notices of newly arrived text messages, emails, and voicemail. I was flabbergasted when I needed an address and map to a local hospital. I called up the “Live Search” option and said the name of the hospital. In less than a minute the address, map, and GPS options were listed on the screen. Wow!

There are things that irk me about the Instinct. Such things like the small keys that cause me to hit other letters when I type emails and text messages. Also, in trying to backspace I hit an adjacent button that totally collapses the screen. This is bothersome.

Overall, I’m kind liking this thing.

It also tells us that sprint made a really good move in releasing the phone before the iphone. It allows them to lock their customers in and retain them for another 2 years.

    Nice move

So what exactly do the BGR postings mean? People really wanted to post on Engadget, but there is log-in process.

Both of the above are equally idiotic, and narrow minded comment.

What I dont get with iphone fanboys is this - other phones copy the iphone they moan, other phones dont copy the iphone, they moan and compare it to the iphone. Are we all supposed to be mindless sheep and all buy the iphone? Should all other phone companies stop producing phones? What happened to choice (which at&t and apple have restricted with the iphone) and personal preference? The iphone may be good but lets be honest and realistic, not EVERYONE wants one. And those that actually want one, what is the main reason they do? Because its cool which just demostrates that most people suffer from a Lemming mentality and cant think for themselves.

There’s the Bold, 8MP Sony Ericsson and others so lets stop pretending the iphone is the only desirable phone on the planet.

I had high hopes for the Instinct..but then I played with one yesterday at the sprint store and it is a piece of junk……the responsiveness of the touchscreen is lackluster at best, the live TV was pixelated and grainy, and the web browser on this thing is just as bad as we’ve heard it was….

I recently played around with the Instinct and its fairly good however there are two cons to it. First being that the qwerty keys are too small, they need to be a bit larger. Secondly, I love the idea of watching TV on the Instinct however there’s no option for us 30 million people with hearing loss to watch TV with closed captioning.

It doesnt tell us that at all. If you read it says most sales were upgrades, which means they had the option to leave if they really wanted an iphone. They chose to stay. Everyone always hating on everyone that isnt and iphone fanboy.

Well, at least we all know why the “I” in Boy Genius has the flashing bars on top of it. The iphone certainly has it’s share of copycats, but has every smartphone that has a full qwerty keyboard been called a knock-off of the Blackberry? It’s pretty obvious that people like the look of the iphone, so of course companies are going to give people what they want. This site is starting to annoy me more than inform me. Unlike when it started and everything seemed unbiased.

Just a sign of the times.

“Smartphones” are becoming increasingly common. Soon it’ll be second nature to have internet, GPS, email etc. in the Palm of your hand. The sales of this thing and the iphone are probably more a testament of the changing times than they are of the superiority of the phone.

On the topic of who copied who, here’s a thought!

Who said iPhone form factor is original. Didn’t Apple rip it off from HTC, or even the iPaqs and palms before that? I mean, a screen with some buttons below it and on top of it………

Not really. Uncle Belvis says it best. For a while I’ve been thinking of removing BGR from my feed reader. This kind of dumb analysis almost seals the deal. Get out of the distortion field and get back to reality.

where is you iPhone and/or Apple joke ?
Unlike the one in almost every Microsoft and Sprint posting.

This used to be an information highway, and is now a useless fanboy club, lead by the “news reporter”.
The whole site is becoming a joke that no one gets, nor wants.

The problem, as I see it, isn’t that people don’t know a joke, it’s that fanboyism has become so prevalent that when someone does make a joke, it’s immediately regarded as them being a fanboy of [insert company name here]

Don’t worry BGR. You’ll still the best out there.

Your post just to seem to piss people off some times. The bashing has gotten a little out of hand but if a BGR reader can’t handle what you or your team has to write then they should stay away from blogs feeds all together..

People need to remember what a blog is. It’s just a simple web logs of someone’s interst or opinions and thoughts on a any subject. Blogs are often a great source for information but by design they will always be just someones thoughts or opions. Me personally I like reading blogs. What other type of web site can you comment on a story try doing that on cnn.com. If you don’t like open opions or thoughts you shouldn’t read blogs.
