Internal AT&T Memo Indicates Groundbreaking iPhone 3G Feature: MMS

Check this out. New reports are coming in that a very interesting memo is currently circulating internally at AT&T. Said memo reportedly lists a variety of features that will supposedly be included on the upcoming iPhone 3G. Among them is an exciting new service that - get this - allows you to send SMS-like messages that include multimedia attachments. Imagine! The service, cleverly named Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) supposedly allows users to attach one or more image, audio file or even video and deliver the message along with text. The recipient of the message will then see and / or hear the multimedia on his or her mobile. Nutty. None of this is confirmed as of yet, but how sweet would it be if a mobile phone had functionality like this?! Oh Apple, you’ve done it again! Next thing you know we’ll find out that Apple has figured out a way to copy text from one place and paste it to another. Ok, that’s just crazy talk.

    Hmmm, why are you so curious about this feature? It’s not new at all and a lot of phones already support it…

    @Conrad

    Sorry Conrad :), statistics show that 88% of the MMS users are under age of 22. You seem to be one of the other 12% :) You should be happy you are so “young at heart” at 45 :)

    MMS is more of a european app.

    Underused perhaps because of setup, usability and reliability issues. It predates 3G.

    Wow… “Iphone” v.1 without GPS, 3G and MMS,
    Iphone v.2 is now called “Iphone 3G”,
    Maybe Iphone v.3 should be called”Iphone MMS”

    Please other phone manufactures don’t copy the MMS feature otherwise we’ll have to read those fanboys comments again for the zillionth time.

    I guess this is a tongue and cheek piece, because my phone already does this, and I’ve had it almost year now before I got a cable and then a Bluetooth adapter, I would make my own ring tones and email them to my phone considering the number of vendors that have been doing MMS. Just to name a few: Huawei, Openwave, Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, Motorola, LG, NowSMS, Wireless Technologies Finland.

    I’m an engineer, and Apple couldn’t patent it, because one they didn’t invent, and it’s a protocol mandated that any manufacturer of a phone that is MMS capable also be capable of supporting all formats. A phone can send an MPEG-4 video in AVI format, but the other party who is receiving the MMS may not be able to interpret it.

    All mobiles should follow the standards defined by Open Mobile Alliance members include traditional wireless industry players such as equipment and mobile systems manufacturers (Ericsson, Thomson, Siemens, Reti Radiotelevisive Digitali, Nokia, Openwave, Sony Ericsson, Philips, Motorola, Samsung, Texas Instruments) and mobile operators (Telefónica, Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile), but also software vendors (Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, IBM, Oracle Corporation, Symbian, Celltick, Expway, Motive, Discretix).

    @Ghime
    So iPhone v.3 will be called MMS :) … And Apple v.4 “Stereo Bluetooth”, v.5 “Radio”, v.6 will “Modem”, v.7 “miniCard”, v.8 “video recording”, v.9 “Flash” etc :) So at a rate of one model per year by 2017 iPhone will be a complete phone and will have most of a Nokia 2004 features :)

    Aw but I love getting those sms’s when friends send me MMS’s to my iPhone and having to write down the super secure username and password and then logging into the viewmymessage site via EDGE and entering the super secure login info (hopfully before it expires!) just to see a picture of someone’s kid. Simply being able to send and receive MMS takes all the fun out of it.
