HTC Touch Diamond firmware fix hands-on

If you’ll recall from our recent review of HTC’s new Touch Diamond handset, we were initially a bit underwhelmed by the performance of the company’s new Touch FLO 3D touch screen interface. The unit that HTC sent us was remarkably sluggish, responding rather tepidly to our best efforts and wrangling it into submission. Turns out we weren’t alone in our observations, and it seems there was some basis to our claim. According to HTC, the test units were sent out with a pre-release version of the ROM that had been let loose without some much-needed final adjustments. Acknowledging their error, HTC recently distributed the official ROM to us. We’re happy to report that the new firmware breathes life into the handset’s interface. Sure, it’s not the most responsive phone we’ve ever used, but everything seems to move much more quickly, making the Touch Diamond a wholly usable handset, which isn’t something we would have said about the first version of the ROM. Furthermore, HTC plans to have yet another ROM revision out by the end of this month, so anyone that might have been turned off by our initial impressions should certainly consider giving this one another look.

Good to hear. I’m impressed they were able to get the UI moving in the right direction. :)

Unless it has a bigger battery, this is a useless update…

Maybe if these phones packed a bit more punch then they wouldn’t have these issues. Or maybe WM6/6.1 are too much OS. I’m not bashing HTC or WM (I’m typing this on my Tilt) but the sluggishness can be frustrating.

Good news indeed. Any perception of sluggishness is a potential deal killer.

That sluggishness is what turns people away from winmo. A phone with a 500+ mHz processor should not be sluggish out of the box….

that sluggishness was not due to wm, the hardware, or the acceleration. its just htc didnt fully finalize/optimize their touchflo 3d. its kinda like the original touchflo(cube animations etc..). it was no where near as fast as it got in later rom revisions. they can release something to the public now that works ok and make it run supper fast later or make you wait months till they make it super fast. watch how good it will get in say 2-3 more rom updates.

The original review was based on a pre-production unit. That is to say it was not ready for release. It is only natural that there are still issues to be sorte out. So come August when it is available in Australia Telstra and I will have this great phone.

You know what might actually be a deal breaker for me with their new qwerty phones & the Xperia? The side the d-pad is on when you slide out the keyboard. Though I love the 8125, I hated that particular aspect. I loved the 8525 & Tilt for this but I’m not liking HTC going back to the “old” design. Sadly this might push me to get an iPhone or SE C9050.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but is a new ROM going to help a 900 Ma/hr battery last more than half a day with winmo 6.1 and a blazing fast processor?
