BlackBerry Bold video mimics iPhone, except it’s fake

Yeah, we’ve heard it all before. “How many different ways can you present a phone on video?” “No, it’s not copying the iPhone commercials and video walkthroughs.” “You’re an Apple fanboy!” Blah, blah, blah. But we’re sure we’re not the only ones a bit surprised to see RIM offering a video sneak peak at the BlackBerry Bold. As nice as that is, there are a couple things that really get under our skin. First off, RIM has never done this before. They’re trying to get the consumer market and be hip, and we get that. It’s just that the Bold isn’t really a consumer device. It’s more targeted at corporate users with its high price. So why bother? They may be scared that small and medium sized business users are going to switch over to the new iPhone — which could be partly true. You know, seeing as how no one in the U.S. will be able to buy the friggin’ thing until mid-August. But our real big issue with the video is (stop comparing it to the iPhone, damn it!) that it’s fake! It’s all a render! Nothing on that video is real except for the person’s hands over a green screen. And that’s still questionable. The OS and device are all computer-generated; every single thing you see in that video is not real. Does that not bother anyone? Web browser? Fake. Email? Fake? Phone call? Fake. Home screen? Fake. Come on, RIM. You’re better than that. You’re resorting to fake phone demos now? Mmm.

You mention high price? I didn’t remember anything about price being said about the Bold. However, If RIM is smart, they have to make this device as cheap or cheaper than the iPhone.

Oh boy… the RIMM stock is crashing afterhours! This is wonderful, sucks to be a RIMM investor tonight/tomorrow morning, sleep well, like I said earlier: goodnight!

The Street thought RIM’s Q1 was an easy layup, but the BlackBerry maker missed both revenue and EPS estimates, and issued mixed guidance for Q2. Specifically, Q2 EPS guidance is below consensus — and well below some bullish estimates — and net subscriber additions are below some estimates, too. Shares are down 9.3% after-hours to $130.00.

NOT SURE HOW YOU INVEST BOB…. but this is a freaking awesome opportunity to buy…

This is making me sick. The iPhone groupies acting like their team just won the superbowl. “Bob” being the head cheerleader.

I’m at the mall sitting outside an Apple store RIGHT NOW. No one in there has an answer for:

    1. Cut/copy and paste,
    2. MMS
    3. Stereo bluetooth

Do you Bob? I can’t wait to hear it.

And why is Rudy silent like the tomb? Maybe he posted and I missed it.

As you all know, I’m a Mac computer guy, through and through, and a BlackBerry phone man, through and through.

But RIM is killing me!!!! Hell yes, mid-August is a long time – a LONG f-ing time!! Are you kidding me?

Someone posted above, “give them a chance.” Uh, with pleasure! Put the damned phone in my hand and I will.

I’m thinking hard now about the e71 but that’s not available either, is it?

RIM needs to make an official statement RIGHT NOW.

As for BG, he hasn’t misstepped yet – that I know of.

In actual fact, Rim opened at $140.00 today and is now trading at 131. Down 6.4% TODAY. If you look at Rim a year ago it was $55.00, That’s up 238%.

Rim Also sold 5.4 million devices in the first 3 months of 2008, and didn’t release a new device.

    RIM’s press release
Revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2009 was $2.24 billion, up 19% from $1.88 billion in the previous quarter and up 107% from $1.08 billion in the same quarter of last year. The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 82% for devices, 13% for service, 3% for software and 2% for other revenue. During the quarter, RIM shipped approximately 5.4 million devices.

The last three quarterly reports from RIM were the same so people have been driving the price up in anticipation of the press release. When a good press is already “priced in” before the press release you are going to get people who sell once the press release is made. That’s just normal. That fact that it only went down 6.4 % is actually great news.

I’ve got an idea BOB, put your money where your mouth is and sell it short. Dare ya.

Like I said Bob= troll> more biased than all the regular apple fanboys ive seen on this site
also bob has not explained why you can’t do mms and cut an paste and stereo BT along with the weak camera an the still crappy voice quality

so far hes just offered negative talking points

but yeah rim seems to be the Sony delaystation 3 right now

also so fare apple offers more the same as last year the only real difference is the addion of hsdpa radios an som increased storage capacity

no micro-sd card slot also if you recall at the developers conference in california jobs metion it was tested in fortune 500 companies
by did not specify wich ones

I can see NDA but I can also see marketing sales pitch

Now what would be interesting if appl actually stopped locking down their devices like they make em for verizone an open up to 3rdparty developers

a year has passed an they still have not done either

i can see the battery delay though com on they don’t need to bat press stories lik Motorola ala the phone battery over heats explodes an kills someone

@Galv – Are you all serious? No MMS? No Stereo Bluetooth? No copy and paste? Not open to third party developers? Those are last years bullet points. MMS is HORRIBLE. Stereo Bluetooth would be nice and copy and paste can be added via a software update.

And did you miss the iPhone 2.0 roadmap? Miss WWDC also? Its open to developers and that third party action is gunna be SWEET.

Also its pretty funny they rendered a WHOLE video and everyones like ohh well give them a pass. Give me a break the Bold is done…

dude why does bgr always act like rim is losing business or doing poorly? i mean i switched to an htc device awhile back but last i checked rim was only continuing to dominate, not slowing down any at all. yes i know alot of people are picking up iphones but that has not affected rim yet. most people i know that use bb’s are boring and own old handsets… that they love like whores love crack. im sure when its time to get a new phone they would be thrilled with the bold. new yet familiar. and functional. period.

Are *you* serious? You said MMS is horrible. What does that even mean?? I use it all the time and it’s not “horrible,” it works.

You agree stereo BT would be nice and cut/paste can be added by 3rd party applications. Assuming the latter is true, which none of the Apple folks mentioned, I don’t want a phone I need to tweak. So you agree with Galv’s points.

Last years bullet points? Exactly! LAST year’s. Why these are unaddressed is beyond me. I thought the only choice I’d have to make is if I can live without a true keyboard.

IPhone has a LOT going for it but it’s negatives are indefensible.

Well…if by horrible you mean who would use MMS if they have a full featured email client, my guess who be yes for people who still have flip phones with T9.

Well we both agree stereo Bluetooth would be sweet and even though I love the iPhone I mean WTF seriously with the copy/paste? I highly doubt Apple will do it anytime soon. Maybe iPhone 3 but who cares, I loves me some mobile safari…

Speaking of this…I just noticed something…look at the video screenshot pic, i.e. the area below the Space key – is it just me, or is the skin of the person’s hand going INTO the silver trim? Gives new meaning to the phenomenon of people getting attached to their devices… ;)

    @ eJay

    My last word on this.

As for the MMS – almost everyone in my life does NOT get email on their phone a la bb or iphone, etc. So yeah, I MMS pix of my son to them all the time. It’s not horrible and iPhone shouldn’t be ignoring this.

The video is fake. All of it. Even the hand. I don’t care. I know the phone will kick serious, serious ass. But I may not wait. I’m a “cut my nose off to spite my face” kind of guy. E71 will have BB support.

This is a surprise that it isn’t a real phone? Wow, how naïve. And I have to agree with the many posts here, you guys are so pro apple. I’m an apple consumer, but find it interesting with your style of reporting. RIM has exceeded Apple in sales of phones and new customers since the iPhone came out. RIM must be doing something right.

bob rocks! Anyways I have owned many BBs and an iPhone. There are pros and cons to each one. I thought BB was the best you can get until I received the iPhone as a gift. Still like BB but never was as impressed as I am with the iPhone. They are both very nice devices but I think the iPhone is the best for what I want a phone to do. We should all just give the BB – iPhone war a rest. Let’s attack something else. I hear Moto is down. Who else got some kicking boots on?

So yeah, it renders & switches apps pretty freakin fast. That video isn’t gonna win any Oscars for cinematography, but it gets the idea across. And unless they’re totally lying:

“How’s the browser? Damn skippy. It not only renders Giz correctly (a feat that makes most mobile browsers cry blood), it’s fast (thanks AT&T), and zooming in and out with the trackball works pretty well.”

So, let’s see, what else? Copy & paste? MMS? Shooting actual, moving VIDEOS with the built-in camera? Sync with iTunes? Slingplayer client? divx? IM clients?

Of course I’ll reserve judgment till I get my hands on both devices.

Looks like RIMM is down on marketing spend mainly, you know, all those new commercials aimed at going after the consumer catagory.

Sounds to me like money well spent, but the shares will get hit hard as the momentum boys run for cover.

Fluck ‘em, I wouldn’t bet the farm against the Canadians.
