BlackBerry Bold video mimics iPhone, except it’s fake
Yeah, we’ve heard it all before. “How many different ways can you present a phone on video?” “No, it’s not copying the iPhone commercials and video walkthroughs.” “You’re an Apple fanboy!” Blah, blah, blah. But we’re sure we’re not the only ones a bit surprised to see RIM offering a video sneak peak at the BlackBerry Bold. As nice as that is, there are a couple things that really get under our skin. First off, RIM has never done this before. They’re trying to get the consumer market and be hip, and we get that. It’s just that the Bold isn’t really a consumer device. It’s more targeted at corporate users with its high price. So why bother? They may be scared that small and medium sized business users are going to switch over to the new iPhone — which could be partly true. You know, seeing as how no one in the U.S. will be able to buy the friggin’ thing until mid-August. But our real big issue with the video is (stop comparing it to the iPhone, damn it!) that it’s fake! It’s all a render! Nothing on that video is real except for the person’s hands over a green screen. And that’s still questionable. The OS and device are all computer-generated; every single thing you see in that video is not real. Does that not bother anyone? Web browser? Fake. Email? Fake? Phone call? Fake. Home screen? Fake. Come on, RIM. You’re better than that. You’re resorting to fake phone demos now? Mmm.

Seriously it’s sad to see that video. It looks so chopped up and put together its embaressing. I am a Rogers user and eagerly awaiting the Bold but If i was still deciding on whether or not to purchase the Bold then this video would’nt sway my opinion either way. It seems pointless
I love how he receives an email while on a phone call though
OH MY GAWD!!!! I’m so offended *sarcasm here*.
The production is lousy, but how else you going to pack all those features into a 30 second demo?
Really, you did an article about this? Slow day?
What a surprise, more iPhone knob-slobbering.
This site really sucks anymore….
It’s not nearly as good as the HTC touch video with the fingers walking through everything…
Okay, obviously it doesn’t render this fast or switch between apps as quickly.
But as a marketing tool, who can blame RIM for wanting to show off what will be available with the phone even if it never works that fast or easy?
Better to get a video out showing what is possible to counter some of the iPhone mania than to be silent.
I got nothing but lust for the Bold, even if the video is just to satiate the BlackBerry crowd for another couple of months or so.
BG lay off the No Doz pills, maybe you need to switch to Decaf too.
I don’t mind the video, heck I just want it to come out already.
Is Mid-Aug really that long of a wait?
The BlackBerry TV commercials also feature the written disclaimer “screen images simulated”. Isn’t that kind of self-defeating if you’re trying to tout (among other things) the multimedia capabilities of a device? This is something that needs to be *demonstrated* in an ad, not suggested, implied, or outright faked (since you’re bound to get busted sooner or later, just like this post shows…)
SMH!. . RIM should jus drop the BB THUNDER
dis fone is a waste of time its the sidekick id of BB’s
It’s one thing to fake screen images, but to not even have a physical product in there? Come on! That typing looked sooo natural. Lolz.
You go try to take a video of a LCD screen and report back whether images should be simulated or not.
Lol jon you haven’t seen the video reviews on here
Every screen image of every handset commercial is a fake. Nonbdy would ever present on a commercial the screen captured by a camera … you have to produce a screencast and then paste it on the captured video … ora on a rendered device. It’s a matter of noise on the image … screen resolution … and so on.
This is a thing that has to be made, by Rim, Htc, Apple … everybody … also for still images.
You beat me to it. And who really cares if it is real or not.
What the problem…that’s not the point. sheh…
So if they make it real people will say oh the iPhone’s is better..and if they make it fake, OH…they are just copying iPhone…make up your mind.
if you want the real blackberry bold video you can check it out on youtube and these are all real.
For such a big company, they must make an add that is more appealing than just the real screen (stop hitting on the company).
How come no body complained about the ads they have on TV already. It appears that the phone is too good to be on the corporate side of the world only since multimedia and various cool tools and options made its way after the pearl and curve.
Long story short: give em a break, give em a chance…
Kind of a silly comment from BGR… don’t get me wrong, but what kind of video do you expect them to come out with? Does McDonald’s use real burgers for their ads? I didn’t think so – who would? From a marketing perspective it’s a great video. Anything less would look amateur.
Who would? Did you not get the reference in the post to Apple’s commercials and walkthroughs? Totally unedited, with a real device. The sad part is Apple would be ripped to shreds if they pulled this kind of stunt. And for some reason, RIM has a pass.
@1adonis1, yes mid-august is a long wait, not to mention we’ve heard dates and they’ve just been pushed back and back and back. ALso, every day past July 11th is going to seem like 12 days….I mean if Lazirdis wants everyone to believe they’ve been working on this “for the past 3 years” and they still can’t keep the battery from overheating the phone, then he’s lying through his teeth. Yeah maybe it was drawn on paper 3 years ago, but if you can’t get a phone to production without overheating in 3 years then someone in RandD needs to be fired, caned, and left for dead. If they can officially announce a device that is still overheating a phone, then yes that mid-august will definitely NOT be mid-august but more like mid-september……..I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Thanksgiving before that is released. And no one in their right mind *unless their company pays for their BB* is going to wait almost 2 months for a BB 9000 that is twice as expensive as the iphone, they’ll just say screw it and get the iphone 3g….
BGR, my passes with RIM are all used up and this, along with the abysmal time I had with the Instinct at the Sprint store at lunch today, has definitely made my choice for me…iphone 3g.
ALl these people saying who cares if its real? well I do, as do other people who are paying $400 for a smartphone. Just like that stupid stunt they had when the 8800 first came out and the theme they showed wasn’t even available, all fake. And when Apple has upped the ante so much, you can’t make sophmore mistakes like RIM is doing and has done. Sure, they’ll keep chugging along at a nice clip with the enterprise market, but who cares. 90% of the enterprise market phone choices are made by the CTO/Email admins, not the user, so they don’t have much of a say so either way. SO even if they don’t lose any enterprise ground it won’t be because they’ve got a better phone, but because they don’t want to re-teach people how to use an iphone for corporate use….
I’d love to see a split screen with someone trying to keep pace with the speed of that rendered video.
And those fireworks looked 1080p for cripes sake.
What’s up BB fanboys? Fake promo video, oh man… maybe thats why the RIMM stock is taking a BEATING after hours. Down $13. If you were dumb enough to hold onto the stock after today’s announcement of the Delay… get rid of it NOW!! Opening tomorrow at 105 will not surprise me. SELL SELL SELL!
Maybe RIMM should first decide to include: A real web browser, a real media player, a real hard drive, a real touchscreen, etc etc etc. My favorite part of the new BB promo commercial, is when they pop out the SD card out of the side! HAHAHA, where is the hard drive? SD card?!? You’ve got to be kidding me. Nice fireworks display, btw. Watching any sort of media on that thing has got to be a blast!
Oh boy… the RIMM stock is crashing afterhours! This is wonderful, sucks to be a RIMM investor tonight/tomorrow morning, sleep well, like I said earlier: goodnight!
The Street thought RIM’s Q1 was an easy layup, but the BlackBerry maker missed both revenue and EPS estimates, and issued mixed guidance for Q2. Specifically, Q2 EPS guidance is below consensus — and well below some bullish estimates — and net subscriber additions are below some estimates, too. Shares are down 9.3% after-hours to $130.00.
