Any word on whether roaming charges will change? I took my Rogers BBerry to the UK and was charged 10 cents per KILObyte. I can tell you, that adds up over a couple of weeks. It would have been horrific if I’d actually used any of the features; emailing pictures, GPS maps, web surfing etc.

I can confirm that these plans are available for all data devices as I currently am using the $30 one with my iPhone. I wasn’t sure that it would be enough, but I am using it fairly liberally and have only used about 10 MB over the last few days since I signed up for the plan on the 20th. I have pretty much done everything (browsing, email, google maps etc.) except for downloading music and tethering with my laptop.

As well, the Rogers rep told me that the plan included unlimited email, but I am still trying to confirm this…I don’t want to call them back because I despise there customer service (in most cases…some reps are fantastic, but my bill is usually screwed up in some way after I make any changes…)

I live in Sweden and I pay $6.50 for 1 GB of data/browsing.
And that’s with turbo 3G speeds up to 7.2 mbits/second.

Yeah those prices seem high when compared to what carriers in some other countries charge, but considering that until yesterday I was paying $60 for 25 megabytes I quite happily switched over to the $30 for 300 megabytes plan yesterday afternoon. I’m “saving” $360 over what I was going to have spent for the year, so I’m not complaining (much).

And to confirm what @guess WHO said, the plans are available for all devices not just the BB, and this includes unlocked non-Rogers/non-Fido phones, with or without a contract. Also, tethering is now explicitly allowed, at least on Fido, which is my carrier.

All in all, not great, but significantly better than what Rogers/Fido had before. It’s a good step forward.

Rogers has the BB unlimited personal email & blackberry instant messaging for $15. I assume that is BIS. Sadly the government let Rogers have Fido or else it may not have been a monopoly.

As for the 6 GB one, yes you could use it if you are say a photojournalist who needs to transmit pictures to the office & news wire ASAP. Just one example, but it does not apply to the whole population.

By the way, these new plans come just as Bell introduced it’s new, UNLIMITED BlackBerry data plan for $30.

Bell made the switch because Rogers got the iPhone. Rogers made the switch because Bell has such cheap unlimited rates. It’s a viscious cycle!

While not perfect, let’s remember before today, 25MB used to cost $60, with $5 per megabyte overage. That’s $5000 per gigabyte, guys.

While not perfect, these prices are a BARGAIN compared to before. Thankfully.

I switched to the $30 plan and now I have no data connection. When I try to send a PIN or email it says service blocked.

Rogers said anyone who switched their data plan over today is having the same problem.

Cause if they don’t introduce lower pricing, what’s the sense in people switching, leave one carrier and pay an ETF only to move to another carrier that’s gonna charge either the same or more, ya that makes sense..

Plz use your head..Galvatron may not know how to spell very well but this time he was right..if T-Mob comes to Canada they will NEED to introduce lower pricing.

It’s actually a step in the right direction at least. I’m paying $25 for 4 Megs of data. before that ( 6 months ago ) $25 for .5 megs and something like 10/meg for overages.

Stand rate for unsanctioned devices or roaming is .05/Kb or 50/Meg. We definately need some competition here for the GSM market.

I’m a rogers dealer and to be honest…yeah it’s all shit but canada cell plans are shit in general. the iphone isn’t going to be the rogers data savior. it’s just going to be another turd in the toilet bowl of canadian cell carriers.

I’m not sure if I’ll get an iPhone now… I was figuring that if they dropped the data price to $30 for unlimited, then my bill would end up around $90 a month, up about $10 from now. This though? Even if I cut back on my current plan I’d still be way over $100 to make this useful.

I wonder though. 6 GB sounds enough, as I think AT&T actually caps out at 5 GB. But what would really be needed? Would 1 GB be enough if browsing the web daily, and using WI-FI when it’s available? Or would that go by quickly with Google Maps and all being used? Hmm…

Note that Telus offers $30/month unlimited BB (email, browsing, apps). I’m surprised more people aren’t into that. Sure it’s CDMA, but they have a worldphone BB (CDMA + non-North-America GSM) that you can use anywhere.
