Rogers makes new BlackBerry plans official
Rogers has just released a slew of new BlackBerry data plans for your emailing and browsing pleasure. There’s still no unlimited BIS option, which is a bit confounding given the upcoming unlimited iPhone Data plan, but this is Rogers after all, so we’re not terribly shocked. The new plans breakdown as follows:
- $30 - 300 MB
- $60 - 1 GB
- $80 - 3 GB
- $100 - 6 GB
Um, yeah. That’s not cheap, though we have a hard time imagining a scenario in which 1 GB of data isn’t enough for average monthly usage, let along 6 GBs. Then again, with the upcoming Bold and its 3G radio, the potential for exorbitant data usage will certainly increase.
Thanks, Paul!

Ouch….let’s hope that ATT doesn’t get bummed out of its head and do the same…I’m not changing my plans….unlimited data with 1500 messages for $30 (P.S.: happy camper)

WOW, how freakin lame is that. Sorry Canada.

@shON It’s cool, we’re used to it.

Note that Telus offers $30/month unlimited BB (email, browsing, apps). I’m surprised more people aren’t into that. Sure it’s CDMA, but they have a worldphone BB (CDMA + non-North-America GSM) that you can use anywhere.

Yeah, we’re very, very used to it. They don’t even use lube anymore.

lmfao! Yes, very very used to it. I’m not sure if I’ll get an iPhone now… I was figuring that if they dropped the data price to $30 for unlimited, then my bill would end up around $90 a month, up about $10 from now. This though? Even if I cut back on my current plan I’d still be way over $100 to make this useful.
I wonder though. 6 GB sounds enough, as I think AT&T actually caps out at 5 GB. But what would really be needed? Would 1 GB be enough if browsing the web daily, and using WI-FI when it’s available? Or would that go by quickly with Google Maps and all being used? Hmm…

Yo! There is no word that there will even be an unlimited data plan for the iphone. I’m a rogers dealer and to be honest…yeah it’s all shit but canada cell plans are shit in general. the iphone isn’t going to be the rogers data savior. it’s just going to be another turd in the toilet bowl of canadian cell carriers.

It’s actually a step in the right direction at least. I’m paying $25 for 4 Megs of data. before that ( 6 months ago ) $25 for .5 megs and something like 10/meg for overages.
Stand rate for unsanctioned devices or roaming is .05/Kb or 50/Meg. We definately need some competition here for the GSM market.

How much is the pay per use rate (not signed up for a data plan)? Please tell me it’s not still 5c/KB.

We’ll get unlimited plans when we get another gsm carrier. ( i.e unlimited with Bell and telus )

@guess WHO
Cause if they don’t introduce lower pricing, what’s the sense in people switching, leave one carrier and pay an ETF only to move to another carrier that’s gonna charge either the same or more, ya that makes sense..
Plz use your head..Galvatron may not know how to spell very well but this time he was right..if T-Mob comes to Canada they will NEED to introduce lower pricing.

Well, rogers should atleast mail out samples of ky jelly in your next bill for christ sake. I cant beleive the government would just sit back and watch this happen. Very sad to say the least.

I switched to the $30 plan and now I have no data connection. When I try to send a PIN or email it says service blocked.
Rogers said anyone who switched their data plan over today is having the same problem.
Be warned - Rogers strikes again!!!

While not perfect, let’s remember before today, 25MB used to cost $60, with $5 per megabyte overage. That’s $5000 per gigabyte, guys.
While not perfect, these prices are a BARGAIN compared to before. Thankfully.

By the way, these new plans come just as Bell introduced it’s new, UNLIMITED BlackBerry data plan for $30.
Bell made the switch because Rogers got the iPhone. Rogers made the switch because Bell has such cheap unlimited rates. It’s a viscious cycle!

canadian consumers get taken for a ride everyday. don’t forget those lovely prices get you locked in for 3 years unless you buy the phone for $600 or whatever it will be.

Rogers has the BB unlimited personal email & blackberry instant messaging for $15. I assume that is BIS. Sadly the government let Rogers have Fido or else it may not have been a monopoly.
As for the 6 GB one, yes you could use it if you are say a photojournalist who needs to transmit pictures to the office & news wire ASAP. Just one example, but it does not apply to the whole population.

I would actually pay the full price just not to have myself LOCKED with any carrier for 3 years.

@ shon what do ecpect from a socalist system? this is why socalism is bad for economics
Robbers is no doubt a GSM monopoly
another GSM carrier need to com along with lower rates and compete canadians WILL flock to it forlower rates an featured plans
See Robbers isn’t used to competition 3year contracts thas BS id get my broom stick and call shnanaigans. thr p0bably have you would think rates would be lower since the canadian doller is worth more than the US doller

@Galvatron: WTF are you talking about? This has nothing to do with socialism. Canada may have enlightened social policies but unfortunately when it comes to wireless it’s all about capitalistic greed, and the laissez-faire Conservative government just stands back and watches us get hosed. If we truly had a socialist government, they would have stepped in by now.
