Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 hands on
If you asked the general public what the #1 Windows Mobile device they’re waiting for, you’d probably lose count of how many times people said XPERIA. Sony Ericcson, for the first time, has entered into the Windows Mobile market, and our first impressions? Wow. You really couldn’t throw better specs on this thing if you tried. From your local flavor of UMTS/HSDPA, to an optical joystick (fire!), to a whopping 800×480 VGA screen, and even cool funky notification lights, this thing is packed! Let’s not forget the physical design of the device as it’s one of the coolest and hippest-looking phones we’ve seen in a very long time. Since our unit isn’t a production version, the software runs a little slow. Even so, in most tasks, it performs very well. We can’t wait to play with a final production unit. It has us that impressed! One major flaw, though… Do you really want to know? The keyboard! Listen guys, if you’re going to throw on a QWERTY, at least make sure it’s worth having, ok? Not to say that this keyboardis absolutely terrible, but it’s one of the worst. Think Sony UX computer, for those of you that have one or have used one. The sliding mechanism comes right ontop of the keys, and thus, the keys don’t travel a lot when pressed. They give little to no feedback despite having a cool triangular design. We’re putting together our review, but in the meantime, you know where the goodies are!

Again i say they dropped the ball here.
1. TOO MUCH WASTED SCREEN POTENTIAL. You have a slide out keyboard and a touch screen why not make the screen as big as possible.
2. WinMo
If this does not have T-mobile 3G it will fail because AT&T already has too many contenders for the throne
Don’t tell me it’s gonna be another 4 days for the review to surface!
@PHug
1. Because people like dedicated keys, and a certain amount of space is needed for the optical joystick/D-pad anyway so it just makes good sense to use the space around it.
2. I don’t see the problem with using Windows Mobile. What would you have it be, Symbian? Blech.
I hope it doesn’t take too long to get used to a phone that opens the total opposite of my Tilt.
holy moses! too late i got a crimson crackberry 8310 n waiting on da crackberry Bold…thanks bg u tried tho.
I’m thinking I like the Touch Pro a whole lot more
Thanks for the 14 photos- but could you please have included one from the side perspective showing its thickness! I’m tired of phones that fit in my pants like a potato.
The big plus for me is:
1. Wide screen hi-res screen
2. slide out full keyboard
3. WM 6.1
The hard decision is whether to choose X1 or Touch Pro. Both of which could be the best smartphone of this year.
Visit Bengal boy to see how LED diods work! So far he made best review of Xperia I have seen.
my thoughts exactly.
Why are you showing the WAP version? Certainly it can do the true version. If not then thats pathetic.
how does this compare to the htc toucch flow pro?
This device is also built by HTC and not Sony.
Bengalboy says the keyboard is fine and one of the best he used
Im gonna take his opinion over boy genius because Bengal boy has had the phone for weeeeks
And his review is very indepth…he took his time with the phone
Maybe it just takes getting used to
@Steve.
Thank you. People seems to miss that part a lot about this phone. That is why this is going to be the best PDA phone Sony has ever had. You can’t beat em… so hire them to make a phone for you.
800×480 screen… damn.
I know I saw a spec sheet somewhere that listed every radio frequency (including 1700), so this thing has GOT to come to T-mo.
C’mon T-mo! For once, just for once, can you get a must-have kick-ass phone 1ST?? Please? No more Sidekicks? PLEASE?
I Heard The Pricing is going to be around $700.
I’am Definately Gonna buy it, I Bearly Found out about the Stylus! This Phone Has So Much Features.
Couldn’t get a confirmation from T-Mobile and my firends at HTC aren’t talking, but they didn’t say no when I asked.
Please tell me it has instant messenger (AOL, Yahoo, MSN). If so, I’m gettin’ hands down.
You, are an idiot.
ive raed a few reviews where people LOVE the keyboard, and watched some videos of it where people comment on it, so im going to wait and make up my own mind on it!
I am sorry to break this news to all the T-mo fans. In many live demostrations and pictures of the x1 there has been a at&t panel on the panel interface of the phone. Take a look at this article.
here is the link for the page that was perviously stated above about the at&t panel http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/03/05/xperia-x1-shows-atandt-graphic-at-cebit-what-could-it-possibly/
I heard that this phone will be coming to T-mo US by the end of September. Can anyone confirm this?
