Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 hands on

If you asked the general public what the #1 Windows Mobile device they’re waiting for, you’d probably lose count of how many times people said XPERIA. Sony Ericcson, for the first time, has entered into the Windows Mobile market, and our first impressions? Wow. You really couldn’t throw better specs on this thing if you tried. From your local flavor of UMTS/HSDPA, to an optical joystick (fire!), to a whopping 800×480 VGA screen, and even cool funky notification lights, this thing is packed! Let’s not forget the physical design of the device as it’s one of the coolest and hippest-looking phones we’ve seen in a very long time. Since our unit isn’t a production version, the software runs a little slow. Even so, in most tasks, it performs very well. We can’t wait to play with a final production unit. It has us that impressed! One major flaw, though… Do you really want to know? The keyboard! Listen guys, if you’re going to throw on a QWERTY, at least make sure it’s worth having, ok? Not to say that this keyboardis absolutely terrible, but it’s one of the worst. Think Sony UX computer, for those of you that have one or have used one. The sliding mechanism comes right ontop of the keys, and thus, the keys don’t travel a lot when pressed. They give little to no feedback despite having a cool triangular design. We’re putting together our review, but in the meantime, you know where the goodies are!

Um, yeah, I think the reason it’s slow has nothing to do with being pre-production. It’s that the thing runs Windows Mobile. Still pretty sexy, though.

I think this proves that the Xperia is gonna be a game changer. To have the only real negative thing be a keyboard that doesnt have great feedback - that says alot.

I think ill be getting rid of my AT&T Tilt in favor of the Xperia when it comes out.

Whats not to love about this phone, you can find some more info about the phone at the unofficial sony ericsson xperia site.

SE has a history of so-so QWERTYS. Look at the P1i, for example.

Hey BG as long as they do a proper review with a benchmark thrown in I think a lot of poeple will be happy.

And do let us know how videos run on the device like vga or videos at the 800×480 resolution run as with a good memory car this becomes a awesome media player on the go.
