Nokia E71 and E66 Get Offical

We know, we know. Since we gave the world an exclusive and extensive video walkthrough with the Nokia E71 last month all other E71 news has been, well, boring. We showed you just about every inch of the Nokia’s slender new stunner, both inside and out. The shinny new UI enhancements, the ridiculously hot form factor, the sleek metal case and every other nook and cranny. It seems like it took forever but Nokia has finally made the E71 official along with its little brother, the E66. Since we already knew just about everything there is to know about these skinny devices, all we were waiting for is release dates and price points. Although the official launch took place easrlier today, we’re still fuzzy on both issues. In typical fashion, we were given “Q3″ in terms of when the handsets will become available. Beyond that we were told that the E66 will be under $500 and the E71 will be over $500. We won’t get into this too much, but which would you consider a better way to announce a highly-anticipated handset: “You can get it on July 11 for $199″ or “You can get it sometime in the third quarter for somewhere around $500″? But we digress. Some new live videos are popping up around the internet today from Nokia’s not-so-secret London launch event so if you want some live E66 and E71 action - again - go seek them out. In the meantime, we’re wondering what we should do with our E71? How about a nice “Will it Blend” video? This is what the E71’s market share will look like in the US because Nokia couldn’t get its act together and release it before July… Vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Nokia MIGHT have gotten my money if it was released before July 11th. But since I would have to wait longer anyway…

If the E71 price were closer to par with the iPhone, I may have been convinced to get the E71. But starting over $500 is a hard sell to me, especially when my company just gave me a blackberry (that I would have used the E71 personally over it were it not for the price to get one).

Seen the device. Read an extensive review. Thinking… Judging… Considering….
Initially not very impressed!! Expectation was much higher! And the hinted price is also at much higher side considering what is being actually offered!

I really like this device. Nokia has always been sturdier than iPhone or Moto. Though, it also highly depends where you buy your products from. Remember the RAZR? I spent 500.00 on that phone, bought it from dubai but it was worth every penny. The build quality is better and more resistant. It wasnt made of a stupid plasticy material like phones here in the US. Other reason it was 500.00 was because i got it 6 months before the release in the US, so that was nice. I remember dropping it a few times and still being alive, again unlike the ones bought here.
Point being- Nokia is very sturdy, and its quality is excellent- better than the iPhones i may add, and for 500, it may just be worth it

QR, just a quick comment for you because you seem very interested in the build. I’ve used a lot of phones in my day and the E71 is far and away the most sturdy handset I’ve ever held. The E61i it replaces had incredible build quality - among the best - and it can’t even touch the E71. The weight, the materials, the lines, the feel… All phenomenal. Add to that an awesome form factor / size and the giant battery (1500 mAh, same battery as the N810) and this phone is hard to pass up. No, Nokia is not marketing its release properly AT ALL in the US but of course they did an amazing job on the phone itself.

Would you guys happen to know if it’s true: that the E71 doesn’t have an orientation/acceleration sensor but E66 does?

It’s a real bummer if Nokia left it out of E71; together with for example multitouch it’s one of the most innovative features to build applications on.

Ah, it’s time to suck it up and go buy one.

The trouble with the iPhone comparisions is that the $199 when you sign your life away for 2 years on a VERY expensive phone plan. Compare the Pay-As-You-Go price in Europe to the Nokia E71 and you will find the E71 is quite a LOT cheaper. Now if only Nokia could get carriers to stop their high end phones I wouldn’t have to pay unlocked prices. I Love the iPhone but I use T-Mobile because of the business practices of AT&T so I can’t have one.

Nokia E66 or E71 are another story than iPhone 3G … the phone is unlocked, you can travel in any country and change the SIM with a local one to have a cheaper data plan (roaming data is muuuucchhh too expensive), you can use it as a modem for the laptop, you have tens of thousands of software applications/games (and this is a huge point), better javascript+flash support in the browser, a decent camera (autofocus, 3.2 MP, video at 640×480x22 fps), MMS, radio, better bluetooth like stereo blutooth headphones, replaceble battery, videocalls, microSD and a lot more. My average cell fee is under $20 per month, including 4 hours of calls (in the same network but which covers 90% of my needs), some calls in other networks and internet option for mobile AND laptop (8 GB traffic but time limited, paying extra after reaching the limit). A time unlimited mobile internet plan (without laptop option) is about 5$, and that is 3G speed, 500 MB traffic included. So I really have no reason to pay $80 per month as I never in my 10 years of owning a mobile phone had reached more than $40 per month. So if you have to choose between a Nokia E71, paying $500 + $20 x 18 months = $860 and a SIM locked iPhone paying $199 + $80-90 x 18 months in UK (or $70 x 24 in the US at AT&T) = aprox $1800, with Nokia having more features and iPhone having bigger screen/touchscreen what would you choose? How many would pay $1000 extra for the iPhone just to have a bigger screen, touch controled device but less business oriented (as it does not support modem function and does not have serios business software made for it yet)? I realize in US you see things differently, but in Europe Nokia E71 and E66 will sell about 50 times better than the iPhone 3G. In Europe most of the people don’t spend $1000 extra just to be cool the same way we do not buy cars which have a mileage of 8 mpg (about 30 liter per 100 km) because nobody makes these kind of cars here :) Probably an average US citizen earns more money than an average European citizen (if we include the poorer eastern countries) and can afford that … but I’m not sure if it is about affordability or something else. So yes, I will wait until sometime about the end of July for the around $500 Nokias instead of the exactly $199 + $1500 contract iPhone on July 11 (which of course will have tottally different prices and launch dates in Europe)

Looks great. But not crazy about the 2.5 mm headset jack or lack of usb port. Also find the keyboard lay-out very odd. I agree with BG, or Zach, can’t remember which said it, why didn’t they put the “z” under the “s” and slide the period over. Duh!

Also, I LOVE the BB trackball. Pretty sure I’d miss it. Yeah, E71 is super thin, makes the Curve look pregnant; but there is a point of diminishing returns when the devices get smaller, smaller, smaller. I’ve never for a second thought my Curve was too big, too thick.

Further agree with Zach about the marketing strategy - Nokia/bb, WTF? Got it give it to Apple for telling us when, where, and how much.

Would love to see a side by side (by side) comparison b/w the Bold, E71, and iPhone 2.

I love those ’shinny’ things. They’re normally on the front of the legs. Then, of course, there are ’shiny’ things, that tend to shine.
