Sidekick LX OTA hits the streets June 25th, contains madness
If you’re like us, you’re not giving that Tony Hawk Sidekick LX the time of day. But, you don’t want to feel left out when all the other cool kids in school are taking videos of their gnarly sk8board tricks. What’s a Sidekick-toting fellow to do? Well, the much-awaited OTA update for the LX will hit on June 25th. It will be a rolling OTA as usual (they slowly spread it out across the devices which can sometimes take up to 4 weeks) and we’ve got the exact details on what it will contain. Below is an easy-to-read version of what we were able to translate.
- Capture videos using the new video mode
- Playback from the SD card or email attachments using the media player
- Share videos via email, Picture messaging, and Bluetooth
- Listen to songs or videos using a stereo Bluetooth device
- Send and receive photos, videos, or music via Bluetooth
- 3 IM clients & enhancements to AIM® and Yahoo!® Messenger
- Create and join group chats
- See who is logged into IM from the address book or email and instantly start a conversation
- Set a custom status message then keep chatting
- Search for friends in a buddy list
- Got more buddies than you can keep track of? See who’s online right from the address book or email, and search for friends in your buddy lists
- Select how Web pages are displayed based on preference
- PC-like, full-size layout to pan & scan while reading o Standard Sidekick screen-size layout to simply scroll down the page to read · Mini Page to zoom out on an overview of an entire Web page
- Save images from Web pages to the SD card Personalize the way you want to surf
- Device does not restart after a download. Just install an item, and it’s ready to use
- Capture videos and share them directly from the Camera app
- Video integration for playback, send, and save to gallery
- QuickFind: search for keywords across applications to find messages or information
- Spell Checker
wooooooowww!! omg this is great i cant explain how excited i am. the sk is already kik ass, now its the best! VIDEO!? n that buddy list from address book sound interesting also!
whaaaaat the LX is capable of all this? I thought it was a crippled device and just a rehash of the sidekick 3 in a newer body. Well actually it is a sidekick 3 in a new body and why they decided to hold off on video for so long is a mystery, if they had implemented I would have replaced my sidekick immediately.

I’m going for the iPhone 3G… Pros: 3G, GPS, MobileMe, App store, better camera. I know that the iPhone doesn’t currently have video recording capability, MMS, or copy & paste, but this stuff could very well come in an update very soon. Heck, there might even be and update right after the release on July 11th. Plus, how long do you think it’s gonna take to send video over and EDGE connection on a LX? Pretty long, I’d say. Plus the camera quality isn’t that good, so how would you expect the video quality be? Not on par either.
So this is only for the LX?
sidkicks are lame, you can have all the features you want wifi 3g and gps in a symbian smart phone or a windows mobile one, why waste your money on a sidekick thats like 5 gens behind some of the more better smart phones.. if you like the side kick so much get an unlocked htc 8125 or 8525 or tilt, iv seen unlocked 8125s on ebay for like 170
Iphone is nice, no one can deny that, but as long as its on AT&T, I will never have one. Say what you want but I love Tmobile and this is making me so happy that I have a sidekick. This is not a kids phone and edge is not that bad. I’m always on here and engadget and I have you guys in my mynewsroom app.

I gotta give props to Danger (M$) on this one, this is a long over due update and it looks pretty cool. Although there are superior handsets like the HTC’s and iPhone, the SK is a great device. It’s not bad looking and the UI has got to be one of the friendliest out there. I have friends who are such SK Fan-Boys they’ll give the Mac one’s a run for their $30/month data plan when it comes to defending their device.

“Ketchup”, ever use a Windows Mobile phone? Its one of the buggiest slowest operating systems in the phone industry next to Motorola’s crap.
The sidekicks aren’t built to be a do-all device. Its a text/IM/email device. And its very good at what it does.
The operating system on the SK’s is the quickest in the industy. The speed in which the phone can switch from the email program to anything else and right back to email is amazing.
Also the browser on the sidekick is probably right up there next to Safari in terms of ease of use and speed.
Pocket Internet Explorer is crap.
Also the SK is capable of reading Excel and Word documents, even though its not market for that.
So again, you’re bashing on a phone for not doing something that its not marketed to do. Its like hating on a F1 Racecar for not being able to go off-road like a Jeep or a Hummer.
The sidekick is awesome, I had 8 phones last year (I work in the phone industry) and 2 of those phones were WinMo phones (Dash and Wing).
Don’t get me wrong, the Dash was awesome. But in terms of speed, reliability, and ease of use, the Sidekick has it beat.

BTW, BB Thunder is going to blow iphone away. Ala MMS, video recording, and the ability to play itunes, just to name a few.
Nice cant wait now thats a whole bunch of an upgrade cant wait now yay you know i rather danger test the video then the sidekick keep crashing so the way they did isnt bad they just wanna make sure it runs smoothly unlike other phones with this ota just shows you the future of sidekicks will only get better..
Actually if we had these features on the sk3 and under devices all of it wouldnt look right because of the resolution so the lx and hopefully side make the best choice for these features…

hmmm…if you are not a fan of the sidekick why read & comment about it? the sidekick is a fun and awesome messaging phone for teens and young alduts. its NOT supposed to be a full out smartphone like the tilt so please go on about your at&t buisness

@james the sk is not a smartphone, its targeted at teens and ppl maybe under 35 who aren’t in to all the extra crap just myspace/text addicted ppl. Myself personally am indifferent i love each os for some reason or another but the phones they put them on make or break the deal. if palm os was on a sk that sux ass cus its not a treo! now the treo and winmo work prty well together and i plan to get the 800w whenever VZW gets it…but yeah yall get the point…..I am going to risk getting a sk and get kick off Tmobile cus i want as sk but only roam on ATT 100% of the time but they have good service. (yeah im still rambling and your still reading so ill go on) when i finnaly got my sk3 from suncom they did away with the national plan so it was 500$+ bills for me when i roamed
I can type 60wpm on my sidekick (which I’m using now) without looking at the keyboard. Name a phone with a keyboard big enough and comfortable enough to do that. That’s the main reason people keep their sks. That and the ability to alt tab (jump button) to any app in a split second. Why else would microsoft buy Danger? Because they want Dangers expertise on building a stable phone OS.
Didn’t the Ocean do all this from launch? Glad Danger has finally taken notice and is trying to compete. Still not going back T-Mobile+Edge=The Suck
