Another day, another iPhone rumor
By now you’ve obviously seen all the rumors about Apple’s 3G iPhone. If you’re hip on your news, you’ll have noticed that everyone is reporting the new 3G iPhone to be thicker than the first generation. I’m not making this statement based on any information I have, but I ask, do you really think that Steve Jobs will release a new iPhone a year later that will be thicker than the original? Yes, it will have 3G and GPS, and possibly a larger battery, but after one whole year, do you really honestly believe the phone will be thicker than the original? I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen some pretty damn small phones that have 3G radios in them. Of course, my feelings could totally turn out to be wrong and Mr. Jobs will use his reality distortion field to make it seem like a thicker iPhone is better than a thinner one, but I don’t believe I am. Anyone with me?

Dude I have been saying the same thing since the rumors starting making there rounds. There is no way it will be thicker then the current gen iphone.

I couldn’t say it any better myself, even the the part on how Steve Jobs would convince us a thicker one is better. And plus nothing and I mean nothing at apple in version 1.0 became thicker in 2.0, Nothing. And if he does this I’ll be pissed and keep my 1.0 iPhone until 3.0 iPhone comes out. And then whats next 3g iPhone will be thicker again, no. So I strongly believe that the 2g iPhone will be thinner then the first.

We can take examples on their products’ history. From their computers to the iPod lines, they all have shrunk. Ex : look how thin the Nano is! compare to last year model; even the standard size iPod now called Classic. So I am assuming they are going in that same direction with the iPhone eventhough it will have more features than the current one. I’m just hoping they bring it down to the iPod Touch thinness.

It HAS to be thinner. I would hate to be the some of the engineers who look at the product designs from Jonathan Ive and wonder how the hell they’re gonna create what he wants.

He is what I think. I am surprised no one else has mentioned this… It is going to be the size of the Touch. When 1.0 came out everyone knew the size and specs so they could make cases to keep this crazily overpriced phone safe. This time around no specs? No way that they release iphone 2.0 naked into the wild with no case. That would be crazy. So the only option would be that they got it to fit into the touch body. A little smaller and thinner.

I agree with maikel. Just look at the iPods. More storage, more features, bigger screens, smaller device.
What’s REALLY amazing is how resilient the dock connector has been regardless of how thin the iPods have gotten. See: current gen nano.

LOL, totally. Ive is a master and deserves the credit he gets, but man they’ve got some clever engineers locked away in Apple Land.

Comments, I meant comments, not “posts”. I’m sorry, I’m done now. Four posts. J’apologise. FAIL. Ha ha ha ha.

I actually had been wondering why they would make it thicker….The iPhone even seems thick to me for a phone without a tactile keyboard, so even thicker would be awful. Hopefully the new iPhone will be 0.4 inches thick or less.

If its making room for a larger battery then I dont care if they make it thicker. I mean not brick thick but you know what I mean. I doubt it though with Apple’s obsession for thinness.

I don’t want one but I’d like to hold one for a few minutes.
And lol @ “reality distortion field”.

Im with Tech Teen, going 3G means more battery drain. If Jobs tells me this thicker iphone has ridiculous battery life, I will be a buyer.

I’m sure that if it is thicker everybody would be like fatter and heavier is better…der…(sheep)

Slow news day my friend? What’s this all about? An opinion about a phone that will be released in a couple of days…why? Bored?

i think it will be thicker i am an engineer and if they plan to make the device smaller or the same size as before it wont be possible to make it thinner.
having 7 bands(speculations), gps, wifi, a larger battery, more memory etc wont be easy.
just a larger battery and same screen will make it thicker, and remember this is not an ipod where they just add more memory for every new model. phone design and especially 3g bands is really new for apple.
anything can happen but i will be totally impressed if they can do all this within the same dimensions.
and by the way apple, don’t make it 2 pounds heavy again.

They have gone to a thicker device before. There were a few occasions in the iPod age where the newer model is thicker when it has MORE capacity. Because there is simply no HDD in existence that can go to the same thin-ness. Same applies here. a new iPhone 2G (iPhone Nano) CANNOT be thicker. But a 3G iPhone with all the new additions might HAVE to be thicker.

Man, it’ll be a real downer if the thing is thicker, and Lawdy forbid if it’s heavier too.
No, I don’t believe Jobs would roll out something clunkier than the previous form factor. It’s pretty obvious he’s all about the guys making things smaller, shockingly smaller.

I’m just being the devil’s advocate here, but didn’t the specs sent to case manufacturers state that it will be slightly thicker at its thickest, but more tapered at the edges?
