AT&T Rolling out 3G Upgrades, iPhone 2 Soon

Remember last year just before the initial iPhone launch? EDGE dropped off for a while and then came back with a vengeance. Prior to the iPhone waterfall that clogged up all of AT&T’s shiny new pipes, we were seeing data speeds of up to 200 - 250 kbps on AT&T’s EDGE network in the New York area. Then the iPhone dropped. Here we are again, getting close to the inevitable iPhone 2 release and oddly enough, AT&T’s 3G services started getting spotty yesterday afternoon in the New York area. Outages sometimes lasted several hours at a time. This morning however, 3G seems to be live again in and to the west of New York City. What’s more, it looks like HSDPA speeds have received a nice little boost since coming back up. For the past few months we’ve been seeing average download speeds between 500 - 800 kbps with a spike here and there. This morning’s tests however, are yielding between 1400 - 1500 kbps. Nice. We’re now hearing that AT&T 3G is still down to the north of the city so one can only assume we’re in the midst of some rolling upgrades. Enjoy it while it lasts people; the iPhone 2 will be out soon enough and AT&T’s networks will be hammered just like last year.

    Yes, if this is true I’ll dump Sprint and get back onto AT&T. I’ll wait until after the release of the 3G iPhone and reevaluate the network speeds again before dumping my $30 all included plan with Sprint.

    I know up here in Albany 3G is pretty good and my son has the Tilt and has great speed. Thing is that AT&T is spotty and its like there engineers throw it against the wall and pray it sticks/works. It’d be nice if there was more confidence in the AT&Ts data network, I have to say that Verizons is probably the best. Sure would be nice if Verizon went GSM, but than they put there cheesy interface on all the great phones and pda’s and ruin them and disable services to make a buck

    It won’t be the iPhone alone that’ll be hammering the 3G network, can’t forget about the Bold too…

    What are these “network problems” around the release of the iPhone that you people speak of? I don’t remember having any issues with my service around that time. And I live in the market area that this post mentions.

    It’s important to note owever, that some portion (perhaps a large one) of the iphone’s market is saturated because existing users may not upgrade to the new, 3G model.

    I agree with Chad, that will also soften the ‘blow’ to the 3G network.

    Anyone who purchased an iPhone is eligible for two year pricing on any device because the phone wasn’t subsidized. You have to be willing to extend your contract, of course, but you’ll still get whatever the subsidized price is.

    Very good business move by Apple and AT&T.

    I am an iPhone lover that works for an at&t authorized rep. A lot of my customers have been returning their 3G phones because the voice service is terrible. I WAS really excited about the new 3G iPhone until I started noticing how many problems there are with the voice service. I might just stick with what I have. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. We’ll see.

    This is great news for at&t. I hope they find a way to keep the speeds up even with many users clogging the pipes. Come on at&t, we are rooting for ya!

    I was on the Acela yesterday going down, and then back, from NYC to Washington DC where I usually get solid 3G coverage and can use my blackjack tethered to my laptop for a reasonable remote work experience. However, yesterday the data service when tethered was unusable - it wasn’t even just slow, it wouldn’t work 95% of the trip. I also noticed that my phone was flipping to Edge much more often than usual (but still not working).

    I guess that explains it, thanks again AT&T for proving that you remain #1 in abysmal
    network performance and horrific customer service. Maybe it’s time for me to unlock my iphone and go back to T-mo.

    @Dayne,
    I remember when 3G was the new thing in the Harrisburg area, if I was on a phone call with a 3G phone, driving into a 3G area, 9 times out of 10 my call would be dropped. Now that was a couple years ago but I’ve had at least 3 or 4 3G phones returned to me and the customer kept what they had to begin with or went with a non-3G phone. They called me when they got home and were happy again.

    Oh really?? I think that I heard T-Mobile is rolling out 3G service for voice only, not for data…

    …now tell me, what good is talking on a 3G network when your still surfing a slow internet??
