Dell Mini Inspiron is… Mini

Dell’s upcoming Mini Inspiron is a nod to the relevance of the Eee space as Dell has apparently realized that they need be playing in kiddie pool. Its first entry, a sub-$500 UMPC, is presumably Windows-powered and looks to be a solid entry into the space, barring the candy coated shell. Specs are a bit scarce at the moment but we can all recognize Dell knows how to build a computer so this will likely be workable. For the time being, all we can tell you is what’s on the outside. Three USB ports, an ethernet port, VGA out and a card reader. Exact size is unknown as well but Dell press shots show that it’s just a bit wider than a standard pencil. Translation: that’s one tiny keyboard! For the teeny PC market this will surely make a splash however, and it’ll match your lip stick.

Im trying to figure just what audience These Eee Pc’s are targeting?

For about the same price you can get a powerhouse of a laptop, minus the compact size I will presume but hey!

    Any comments?

    I like.

Hey, how many execs (ok, forget other execs, let’s just talk about STEVE JOBS) carry around unannounced (testing phase) product and bring them to major conferences, presumably to use as primary means of taking notes/checking email/whatever else they need to do?

Love news on tiny laptops! Keep them coming.

On another note, just a pet peeve… please STOP spelling ‘lipstick’ as two separate words… it hurts my eyes when you guys do that.

From the pics I saw, it looks like it suffers from the same problem that led to me trading my Eee Pc for a Mini-Note.

The keyboard looks like an RSI nightmare.

Other than that, it looks pretty good.

Strange how they put the Dell logo upside-down on the lid. Maybe it’ll be fixed in the production model?

Sounds neat, but until they can squeeze a dvd-drive into it, I’ll stick with the larger laptop.

I don’t think the logo is upside down. The picture was just taken that way.

Aw, come on Nate you know what I meant. In the link, when the lid is open the Dell logo is upside-down. I remember when Apple started flipping the MacBook logo’s on the lids after they saw that it was upside-down on some show and everyone else followed suit…

This is the story of how the new Dell Mini-Inspiron saved Jeff B. from a nasty run-in with an English teacher.********

One day Jeff was sitting in class and realized “oh shit the papers due”

Acting quickly, he remembers that he had an almost finished copy on his Tilt, and that he took his Black Mini-Inspiron with him today.

He used the Bluetooth on the Tilt and laptop to transfer the paper quickly and silently then started typing his conclusion on the Mini-Inspiron.

Before he knew it he was done and asked the teacher if he could plug it into the printer to finish the deal.

5 minutes later he had a hard copy of his paper turned in.

That’s the story********** of how the new Dell Mini-Inspiron saved Jeff B.

*******story is very untrue…except the Tilt part, I do have one of those.

Sounds too much like a Toyota commercial.

EEEPC is a cheap low end pc for web browsing, chat and mild word processing etc.

Its not marketed as a powerhouse and it simply isnt one. You find most laptop users simply type documents and browse the web on the go. You dont need a dual core system with 4Gb DDR2 if the needs are so simple.

Yes a little more cash can be spent to get a “full” laptop but why spend it when you don’t need to. I’d rather use it to have a night out.

Its a great innovation and many companys are following suit (MSI’s Wind and Dell’s Mini Inspiron to name but 2) but its a good idea. If you don’t like it thats fine but I think its great.

Who says you can’t. It may take work or it may all work out of the box. Ive seen sites saying it will ship with XUbuntu (I’d say itdperform better with Fluxbuntu but thats my view)

    Peace out bro

We did some measuring in photoshop and our guess is a 8.9″ screen and overall dimensions of about 8.5″ x 6.6″ x 1″.

The target market? Students, bloggers, and journalists are the prime market is my guess. Since the prices starts under $400 this won’t be too expensive for students to get and work on.

The system isn’t meant for gaming. It sounds like it’s 1.85 ghz Atom CPU and 2 GB RAM on top end. It is meant for people who do a lot of typing. It’s a perfect homework computer, or if you are a person who travels and does reporting, then this is a light weight version of everything you need.

It sounds like DELL may ship it with Ubuntu installed already. If you didn’t know DELL offers Ubuntu pre-installed on their PC’s now.
