Great review, thanks! As I suspected, the E71 has once again come short of what it could be. I had decided to give Nokia three chances to make things right after the fabulous 6820 phone:

The E70 was great for its time with the resolution and Wifi but way too bulky and very slow especially when switching orientations.

Then came the E61i that finally neiled the slim factor but continued to be as slow as a turtle, especially compared to the Curve.

Now comes the E71 that seems to fix the responsiveness but then again the competition has moved again with the fabulous browser of the iPhone, the super convenient and efficient shortcuts of the Blackberry, etc. Nokia has completely given up innovation. Its focus instead is to take yesterday’s technology/trend and mass produce it for economies of scale, hoping that the name will sell.

Not anymore. I am giving up for the BB Bold. My key complaintes with the E71 based on the review are:

    1) Still slow, especially the browser

    2) Lack of 3.5 mmm – effectively unable to compete with the iPod because the Nokia headphones suck

3)It takes for ever to do simple tasks such as addding a contact, responding to an email – just the user interface is yesterday’s

    4) It looks 95% like the Curve – can’t you do a little better, Nokia?

    So, bye-bye!

    Hello BGR

Great walkthrough I’ve been so long waiting for real pictures of this phone. Unfortunately I am in the army now so I couldn’t ask my question:

Is the PDF solution of the E71 satisfying? Especially compared to the BB Bold which is more recommended to read PDFs?

Can you show us a picture of the packet contents so far? I’d be interested in knowing whether the headphones are like the ones from the n95 8gb(mic with 3.5mm headphones possibility)

Thanks a lot for your help,

    Greetings from Switzerland

I’ve been using the E61 for ages. Been waiting for the e71 for a long time. I don’t use GPS and why is Nokia shoving it to me? A TV out for presentations and an acceleration sensor for games would be have been greatly appreciated. Business people play games too.
I love the looks and OS but an N96/N95 specs with keyboard would be the King Kong of mobiles.

Acceleration Sensor, G-Sensor or call it what you like, but please say yes or no: does it have an acceleration sensor?

Thanks a lot for saying yes or no!

Umm that would be more like the Ding Dong of Mobiles, i.e. SE Paris/P5/P200/what have you…

wow! what a piece of shit! 500 keystrokes to do anything! The web browser was seriously lacking.

You can have your Nokia. One of their serious marketing mistakes is having 300 models. What’s the difference and who cares?

Great Reviews. disappointed with the screen size. seems the same as motorola. also, why isnt there touch screen function, like the palm or sonyericsson G900. be great to have those functions. not much coverage on the calendar functions, isnt that what a buisness phone’s basic function – scheduling. seems diificult to key in events. really need more explanation. still deciding between the e71 or iphone.

How can I activate the menu transitions? It looks as if this option is missing in my E71, there is no option to enable/disable this feature, and obviously it’s not working as on the Video, I get the standard menu browsing like other FP1 devices. What’s the firmware version?

    Hi,
It is a wonderful phone. However, the earpiece hurts the ear and might case headache. It can easily pick up a paper clip off the table. The magnet in it is dangerously poerful.
