Hello all,

I have just bought the new Nokia E71 from US but am facing a simple problem that I live now in UK and the 3G is not working as I have checked and found that the mobile I have bought is ( E71-2 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/1900 HSDPA ) which support the 3G in US only and what should I have in Europe is (71-1 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 900/2100 HSDPA )so is there is any way to have the 3G work within Europe or is there is any software upgrade ??

I love the Nokia E71, but I also love the iPhone 3G. In fact it is the first time in a number of years that I think there is a great phone out there (even 2 now). – Over the last couple of years all of the phones available always had major drawbacks. Now finally devices are really great.

its a bad phone whenever i open gps the phone hangs and the only option i’m left with is to remove the battery and start the phone again..

hi there,
i have been using my E60 for two years now, and i dare to say that it has been perfect.
since NOKIA announced the E51 i have been into it since i read a roumer of NOKIA LIAM (or E71).
that, really kept me from going for an E51. now, i can say that your review and photos show that i have done the right thing to wait for the E71. but i still have questions:
1. is the keypad comfotratble to use, considering the size of the keys?
2. can you compare the build quality of the E71 to the flawless E60?
3. is the processor an arm11, 369 MHz, or what?
4. how long does the battery last for you ( pls mention your usage)?

From the E71 i have in my hand, it does have FM Radio and GPS but definately no 3.5mm audio jack. It’s running on FP2. Shares the same battery as E61i. The charger connector is at the bottom of the phone below the mic.

Agreed with boy genius, the interface is blazing fast, I dare to say it’s faster than some phones running on S40 as well.

I bought a N82 while waiting for this one, finaly its nearly here.

As a E61 user for the last two years, ive been waiting for the update and hoping would include GPS, A2DP and 3.5 jack.

(note to the article author: if you’re going to talk about “US 3G”, don’t be lame and only mention AT&T; if you’ve actually done your homework on this phone, you know two things: a) you’ve failed to mention the OTHER US 3G service, and b) that Nokia did in fact manufacture 3 versions of this phone, not just two … if you’re going to talk about “AT&T only” support, don’t call it “US 3G”. If you’re going to talk about “US 3G”, then don’t leave out 1700MHz devices … burying your head in the sand and pretending that “US 3G” == “AT&T 3G” just shows that you’re no longer up to date on current events … not a good sign from a tech gossip column)

They have in fact manufactured a 1700MHz version (ie. T-Mobile-USA), as it was seen passing through the FCC documentation along with the Euro and AT&T versions. But whether or not they’ll actually sell both of the US 3G versions is unknown.

Any news on what USA provider and when this may be out for purchase? Does it support the T-Mobile 3G or just ATT? Also, how is call quality? I rarely see call quality and volume mentioned when discussing cell phones anymore.

huge old school Nokia fan here…not been too happy with the offerings of late, but this looks like a real winner. Thanks for the scoop BG-look forward to more info and a video.
Need a new phone in a bad way…been waiting for the ’summer of phones’ to make my selection….lineup in no particular order: BB Bold, iPhone 3g, Xperia, and now the e71….decisions-decisions-decisions!

Hey BG, the Luna 8600 charges over micro usb.

Either way, this is going to be the phone to have. How the E61i improved on the E61/E62…the E71’s feels like a needle shot of steroids!

The only thing you give up is the screen size tho =(

I don’t believe the headset jack is actually 3.5mm. At least it doesn’t look like it. Will check it out.

The USB port is a microUSB port. Will also check out charging it via USB, but I doubt it.

It has a software macro mode, but not something that’s controlled by the camera hardware.

Above the USB port/cover is the microSD cover/slot.

There is definitely still an IR port.

Yes, the front-facing camera is to the right of the ear speaker, and to the left is the light sensor I believe.

In general, the phone flies! It completely destroys any other E-Series device I’ve used, and its pleasurable to use, too. This will set the Nokia bar way high and will potentially do some damage to other smartphone manufacturers.

Like I said above, will check on it, but highly doubt it. Only Nokia that I’ve seen that will charge over microUSB is actually the Vertu Ascent Ti, which isn’t exactly a regular Nokia.

As someone who’s been using an E61i full time for nearly a year now (since mid June 2007), your wonderful photos show a host of improvements that aren’t evident in the high-level spec list:

1 – They’ve added some space below the bottom row of keys (or moved the keyboard up slightly). On the E61i, it’s a bit hard to use the bottom row one-handed due to balance of the device.

2 – Added a 3.5mm standard headphone jack. Maybe I’ll actually use the music player on the E71 (and the pretty good music sync software).

3 – Added a USB port. I can’t tell (due to the flap being closed) if it’s standard mini-b or a micro-b variant…but if this means I can charge it natively (out of the box) from my laptop, then yahoo!

4 – Auto-focus (and 3.2MP) camera should be a great improvement over the already pretty-decent fixed focus 2MP of the E61i. Hope it has macro mode, though that may be asking for too much.

Now, if I may ask some questions, BG:

A – Above the USB port – what’s the next button? Looks almost like “play” type of arrowhead, but I can’t tell for sure.

B – Is that an IR port still present 2 steps above the USB ?

C- Is that a front facing camera on the right of the main speaker?

D – Does the UI Navigation feel snappier compared to an E61i ?

BBC will work fine, and the display is indeed 320×240. Also the VoIP client is the same as the one in all S60 devices. It’s ok, not great.

does this have FM radio? Any chance of trying if a BBC client, of maybe E90 ,gets installed?

This and E66 got announced by TIM on Saturday in Madrid. My guess is Nokia would announce it too by the next week.
