Ahh Wednesdays. Is the first half of the week over or is the second half of the week beginning? Optimist or pessimist, here at BGR we’re doing our part to make today as painless as possible. How about we start out with an exclusive dose of some live shots of the Palm Treo 850! Truth be told, this puppy is pretty smooth looking! Details are still coming in but we can tell you it’s sporting a 400 MHz processor and 100 MB of RAM. Hit the jump for a nice comparison pic with the BlackBerry 8800.

Oh, see I was talking about Phones and the phone market and not the stock market. I could give a crap less about how Palm’s Execs and the people gambling one way or another on Mobile Tech stocks are doing.. This market is like playing Keno for the long term. Good chance Palm will come around or stick around and this was the first step in that…
So now what has RIM done in 1 year exactly? I dont see any new form factors out. And how exactly are they new compared to stuff that has been out for oh like 3-4 years from other manufacturers…
And so you dont understand a-gps technology.. Thats ok, you can read up on it again…But Im not sure where you even got that it was aGPS. Just making it up for your argument or?
Here’s what I love about this market an all the so called blog experts. They all think it moves faster than it does. Especially in the North American Market most people are locked on a 2 year deal on a subsidized phone and then throw in exclusivity deals and the fact that most of the market doesnt jump carrier to carrier each phone. So the fact that HTC came out with something 2 years ago, but it finally made its way to my network 5 months ago really takes most of the 2 years to late stuff out of the picture. Most everyone has to skip about 2 phone generations anyway…
Yes Palm could do a better job of turning over devices to hit more of that spectrum. Or they could just make it right as they appear to be doing now if it is going to have a 2 year shelf life, so that they have higher customer satisfaction and better word of mouth, probably learning from earlier mistakes…. We’ll see….
But you keep basing your phone design opinions solely on whether or not some stock analyst says sell and any other bad information you may have gotten on the interweb.
And dont actually come up with anything that you would feel is innovative(unless it the same thing re-hashed by one of the companies not on the sell list) and you definitely keep making your arguments stronger…

I have to admit that this is the best looking device that Palm has come up with to date. I still think they need to get away from the same form factor though. Get rid of the keyboard. Move the tilt button pad and four buttons around it to the bottom of the phone and make the screen larger. I’m still one of those people that like a physical keyboard so then make the phone a slider and move the keyboard under the screen.

@bird(of-a)feather:
Mischaracterizing what I’ve stated is just *so* you. -sigh-
When I state “market”, I refer to the market competition which gets a quaint chuckle from Palm’s existence. Sort of like the slightly slow team member that can’t keep up. For the record, this market plays on the field of the stock market, therefore they are inseparable, despite your conveniently created delusions.
You’re clearly aware of RIM’s new offerings in 3Q and 4Q this year. A full make-over of their OS for the ‘Thunder’ and the first clamshell Blackberry with its own set of OS enhancements for the formfactor. You may not like the offerings, but this shows RIM’s flexibility and strength to explore new market segments unreached by competitors. The market responds to those companies who engage it. Truth’s a bitch, boy.
See you at the funeral.

@backbeat - Wow! do you actually work at one of the phone companies that manufacture these types of devices? Nice back seat driving…

Did you mean: sentence?

Great.. and yet neither device is even out or guaranteed to do anything new and/or make any money at all.. Really, these 2 phones explore NEW market segments?? Now you got me laughing.
You can go on with whatever makes you feel superior, while most of us are sitting here thinking exactly what gadgetfreak just said. Im sure you are brilliant in the stock market and phone innovation business… Or you’re some entry level sales kid at an At&t store in rural nowhere aspiring to be more… I didnt bother to figure out which one.
Good Luck to you.

Looks good. Real good. Will there be a version with the promised new Palm OS?

I completely forgot. TechnoFascists, such as yourself, drunken by their guzzling of Palm Koolaid, wouldn’t know the first thing about attracting new market segments, since they only (re)sell to their own klan. Talk about an incestuous relationship!
None of this makes anyone here superior, dolt. Yet the truth remains unchanged and undaunted. Don’t like reality? Don’t care for me? Here’s a dime. Call someone who cares. Truth’s a bitch, boy.

Boy! Thats funny.. So you are trolling…
I guess to have the opinions I have, I dont need any Palm Kool-Aid. And nobody is denying that Palm’s stock isnt up. Now go back and figure out what we are supposed to be talking about and then keep convincing yourself that Blackberry is going after New Market Segments and is super innovative. Yeah, the form factors are new to them, but ancient to the Smartphone Market. Those Crazy Innovating fools!
And as no one at all has disagreed with, Palm needs to be not far behind with other form factors… But they also need to take care of whats keeping them afloat. There’s your reality.
This phone looks good. This phone has a very competitive feature set. This phone will sell millions!
But you argue with yourself some more…or get back to showing Feature Phones to little old ladies…

Stock isn’t up … why? Cause & Effect are market laws from which Palm is not exempt.
When was it that Palm OS was re-engineered for a pure touch interface? Ummmmm … Never!
What percent of this expanding market segment does Palm own? Nada!
When was it that the _Treo_ was available in a flip-phone with OS integration into the new formfactor? Ummmmm … Never!
What percent of this expanding market segment does Palm own? Nada!
This 850 phone is already behind leading-edge, and already released, units from Sony, Nokia, Apple, RIM, and Samsung. You’re sucking air, Palm.
Trolling? You define the word as only trolls focus on slamming others with that which is unprovable.
Truth’s a bitch.
Idiot.

I like argueing with children. To get their point across they mumble the same things over and over in parallel to what is being said instead of at it. And then they’ll call a name when they cant come up with anything else constructive.
So Because Blackberry decided to rip off iPhone with a “touch only” version, they are innovating. So is every feature phone maker in existance.. What % does BB own.. Nada! Can they implement it poorly?? Extremely possible with BB’s Poor one dimensional OS.
And in this volatile market, with overpushing a dud phone and a couple more outages, Blackberry’s stock takes a dive… A sure thing. No.. But either is Palm not releasing similar form factors soon after… Its not as big a stretch, since Umm… 98% of all Palms ever have had touch screens…
A Smartphone flip phone is an expanding market segment?? He he!!
Umm.. Behind the Edge iPhone with no GPS?Behind which released Sony? Behind which released RIM? One Samsung might have similiar specs, but isnt pretty, is pricey, and cant even get into the North American Market. Something Palm will have no trouble doing on multiple carriers! And a weird thing that affects these ‘market laws’ is price. Treo will win that battle on most fronts.
But I give you that there are probably a couple Nokia units in Europe that compete, but on price and in the US? Havent seen em..
And trolling is slamming and provoking others because you cant get your point across… or dont have a valid one. Ill stop now before you degrade any more. It was fun sparring until you started showing your age…

Obviously, comprehension of the english language is not your forte. Maybe you could have James or Goatboy pinch-troll for you.
Again, provoking with off-topic personal assaults you cannot prove nor have the integrity to intelligently argue. Tsk, Tsk!
Have a pleasant day (and the last word as trolls do).

“GPS is *a*-GPS, relying on triangulating cell towers to get you within 0.33 mile of your destination. R&D couldn’t be bothered with a real GPS receiver? There goes the real market right by Palm again.”
Clearly you win for being a techno idiot and you hereby surrender any notion of authority on the subject when you say things like this.
AFLT = “triangulating cell towers to get you within 0.33 mile of your destination”
aGPS = satellites and/or tower assistance servers
Confuse things much?
I say “and/or” above because the tower assistance servers (who do the the computing) are optional–so optional in fact Sprint does not have then enabled by default on their WM devices (Q9c, Mogul and 800w), though they can be enabled via registry to give a faster response (TTFF) and work indoors.
Good lord - never EVER cite backbeat if YOU want to retain ANY hint of credibility.

Sprint-absorbed apologia spoken like the sympathetic troll-surrogate you are. Brav_O!

Following the lead of a Palm-apologist only results in the same result as the no-go 800/850. Going down?
Surrogate-trolls who base their entire knowledgebase on Sprint is the very definition of oxymoronic. Thanks for the clarity!

@ Outrigger:
I did have a BB Curve and the double space bar works for a period, but alas, not an elipse, and I’m way too fond for using those to stay with RIM…
@ Jas:
Thanks to a small little piece of freeware called Keycaps, my Treo outperforms my Curve by a wide margin!

Best thing that can be said about the 850? ……
Unlike the 800, it didn’t get its worldwide pictorial ‘debut’ in a men’s room being squeezed by Senator Larry Craig!

Will it be available for ATT with Palm system?

DUHHH…WELCOME TO THE 90`S…..SOME ONE PLEASE GIVE THIS PERSON AN UPDATED CALENDAR!!

Sorry, bub, but since your “3-year-old 700wx” was only released just over 2 years ago, you may want to look into a more adequate calendar.
Good luck with your soon-to-be-released Retro850! LMAO!

God you guys sound like a bunch of old “Bitches”.
I love my Treo 750. Size, shape, functions… The only reason I would go with the 850 is more RAM and a faster processor. If you care what any phone/PDA looks like you’re being childish. If it serves your purpose, that’s all that matters….
Just my $.02

Some of the people on here criticizing the Treo form factor have most likely not used one. It is simple to use and once you enter the period, if you start typing again, it will automatically capitalize the first letter in the next sentence. The formfactor may be unchanged very much and many are stating that blackberry is better piece of equipment but that device does not yet have a touchscreen. If one wants to criticize a device for being outdated, one would want to criticize a PDA w/out a touchscreen. When it comes to the revolutionary Iphone, it wasn’t nearly as revolutionary as many believe. That phone’s revolutionary features, are recycled ideas and many appeared on the Treo long before either as proprietary or 3rd party software. Visual voicemail is now available for this device via a 3rd party company. That is the one item that was missing from the Treo. One other issue people complain about is that this phone is not very friendly towards the consumer market, that is due to the fact that it is a device oriented towards the business market. I state this as an employee of one of the big 3 telcos and I have experience with the different devices but have developed an affinity for the Palm devices.

who would be the carrier for this phone?

If the rushing sound of business away from Palm bothers some precious pets out there, tell it to Wall St who mirrors the results of Palm’s abysmally poor Main St-market performance.

*Jas said: “for example there is no dedicated “period” button as is on the Treo750. So I have to push “alt” then the “period” button?”
Uh, there IS a dedicated period button - it is the one to the left of the return button. This is the same keyboard as on the Centro.
