AT&T announces full HSPA for 3G markets by end of June
Here’s some good news, folks. AT&T has just announced that they will have full HSPA coverage across their entire 3G network by the end of June. Currently, 275 AT&T markets sport full HSDPA/HSUPA coverage. That number is expected to rise to 350 by the end of next month. If all this sounds a bit familiar, you’re probably on to something. The company embarked on a massive EDGE network upgrade last year, just prior to the release of the EDGE capable iPhone. It’s no secret that Apple’s new handset will sport a 3G radio, and the proposed USP improvements are no-doubt related to the impending launch. As excited as we are, we’d still love to see full 3G penetration across their entire network, but we’re guessing that might take a bit longer.

I wish AT&T would show us 3G phone owners, who don’t care about the iPhone some love. This type of news make me think that AT&T could give a shat less about us. Oh well, atleast they will let us in on the new and improved 3G network.
Anyone have a tilt or any other 3G phone on AT&T network outhere????? is so, is 3G data price the same as the $20 unlimited they charge for EDGE???
I have the Treo 750 on AT&T, the data price is 30.00.
Does anyone know if HSUPA requires an different radio or simply a software upgrade?
I have a 3G phone on AT&Ts network, and the unlimited charge is $49.99, and that’s not including any txt…and tethering is extra. I think I pay a total of $79.00 for unlimited data with tethering and unlimited txt.
There is no separate charge for 3g vs edge. You pay for the right to use broadband in any fashion you can get it.

you need to go back to the store and have them fix that bro…it’s only 30 now for data on a smartphone (15 for regular phones) and 20 for unlimited text

HSPA/HSDPA/HSUPA aka 3G is an actual hardware upgrade
Keymaker –
Data is cheaper on the iPhone for several reasons:
1)the existence of Wifi
2)edge
3)Apple/At&t agreements
Yeah, but if you have a Tilt and you flash it, you can get Exchange email, FULL Tethering, 200 SMS messages, plus unlimited internet browsing for 15.99 a month with ATT. They of course don’t want anyone to know about that, and only suckers pay full price for everything, but yes it is possible to use the HS*PA now and get all of the benefits it can provide (read: Skype, VoIP, VideoCalling, etc…).
but if you already have a phone with 3G capability, can the HSUPA be enabled with a software/firmware upgrade?
HSDPA is nice to have but if they’re just doing ti for the new iPhone, then g-d shall damn them to hell. Damn them all to hell.
Silly iPhone haters. Get over it.
Everything that happens is always some cause for someone to bitch about the iPhone.
So what if they are only doing it for the iPhone? It still benefits those devices with the hardware to use it. If AT&T is going to step up and upgrade services and its network, who cares why.
Someone let me know what “perfect” device they are carrying. And by perfect, I mean one with absolutely no shortcomings and that EVERYONE in the world thinks it’s perfect.
The changes in 3G speeds are for the towers only. The speed at which your phone moves depends on the manufacturer and the processor. As a company, we will always upgrade our systems. This is why we are rated by 3rd party sites as having the fastest mobile speeds. Not to mention, we stick to our guns on our policy, make alot of money doing it. We buy out smaller companies for poops and giggles. All and all, AT&T has money to throw around and they make intelligent choises on when they upgrade, ie 3G iphone and Bold. These two devices will fly off the shelves. Come see me and I will sell you one!
Prices- Unlimited internet for any PDA- $30
Unlimited internet for any consumer device-$15
Unlimited Text for any device-$20
Unlimited Tethering is replaces any data feature at-$60
If anyone wants fast speeds for the fututre, go with Apple or Samsung. the Bold will need to be in my hands before I can say anything about it. Sorry for the fragments.
I couldn’t agree more with the iPhone haters comments. Does someone really care what AT&T’s motivation is behind rolling out a better, faster network?
I believe Jack Nicholson said it best….
“I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it.”
It doesnt make us haters because we dont own an iPhone and we’d like radio upgrades because we need/want them.
Motivation for doing something can be a bitch and offensive. I.E. Lincoln wanted to free the slaves – but his motivation – sending them back to Africa.
I could care less why they are doing this. But it really ticks me off that they are upgrading the speed of their current coverage area & forget getting 3g to everyone else. We were told 3g would be available last year & still nothing. If AT&T has so much money to throw around why isn’t their 3G network as wide spread as Verizon? If CDMA phones didn’t suck so bad I would switch in a heartbeat. AT&T needs to get in gear.
i thought 3g was supposed to be network wide by now, wtf bloomington IL has it its getting closer to me !!!!!!!!!!
oh i agree with cokeman Evdo is in the central IL market whree i live i might be tempted to switch but i like having a butt load of phones to insert my sim into, ( wow that sounds kind of perverted lol )
UMTS is an entirely seperate network to the existing GSM(EDGE). there is a multitude of reasons why 3g isnt network wide, the main ones being time, money, and priority. Since UMTS is a new network, it requires lines, antennas, and new base stations at each and every existing site. Then you have to renegotiate existing leases, then there’s the availability of equipment, then there’s initial opimization by the network vender (Ericsson, Siemens, Lucent, or Nokia) which is decided at the market or region level. Why you dont want EVDO is in the acronym (at least it used to be) EV-DATA ONLY. UMTS can handle voice and data simultaneously, and our phones are better, sorry to be so honest. This year and next will see a huge 3g ramp up.
