A couple exclusive Palm Treo 800w shots!

While this post might be reserved for aretheystillreallyinbusiness.com, we thought we’d be doing a disservice to public humanity if we didn’t run this. The first shot is of the Palm Treo 800w by his lonesome, and the second shot has the 800w in the middle of a Samsung Upstage, and a PPC-6800. Check them both out after the jump!

How could you be excited, hardware upgrades like HSDPA, WiFi, and WM 6.1, are nice but for the love of god what the fuck is with having only one design. Jesus hire some people Palm, or close your shop and hand it over to HTC, who may fuck up on hardware from time to time, but at least they have the common courtesy to have some new looks

Note to Palm. It’s 2008, not 2001. Thin is in.

I personally am looking forward to this phone. Can anyone tell me of any bar phones that have a touchscreen, wifi, 3G, GPS, and a full keyboard available on a US carrier?

This belongs in that cup of ice with the old Treo in it below. Palm has cooled off…a long time ago.

But it really is amazing how they still have money to pump out another ugly p.o.s. every week.

Wow - so Palm really doesn’t get it.

@Vik: Yes, its the 3G iPhone and it will be out on AT&T or jailbroken on any GSM carrier worldwide, by the end of June.

Oh and it will still be 1/2 the thickness of the 800w.

    @PALM: FAIL!

I think I’ll keep my treo 750 and get the new 3G iphone when it comes out. There is nothing new on this device that is really that great over their older devices. Just a better screen res. Wifi when you have 3G, what is the major difference. GPS, my car already has that. I would rather a 320X240 display with a front facing keyboard for a change of pace, that I might buy.

Vik, I’m kinda in the same boat in terms of what I’m seeking. Closest thing I’ve seen is the Samsun i780 which is only triband and non-US 3G at this point (though rumor is that they may make a US 3G version).

I don’t like the Treo 800 form factor / look any more than any one else here, but like you say, what alternative phones have the same feature set? I dare say there is nothing on the market today (and the 800 ain’t available yet, either, so let’s see which horse wins the race to market!)

    - Quadband GSM + some flavor of 3G (ideally tri-band 3G including 2100MHz so I can use it in Japan and Korea - i.e. a true world phone)
    - WiFi integrated/internal
    - GPS integrated/internal
    - Touchscreen
    - QWERTY keyboard on the front of the device to support real one-handed use (no sideways slide out).

It’s possible to get 3 (even 4 in rare cases) of the 5 features above, but not all 5 of those features on any device available on the market(anywhere) today…..at least none that I’m aware of.

Umm…except for not being a slider phone the at&t TILT has all of that, even the 2100MHz.

    Gotta love HTC.

But I’m gonna stick to my Blackberry 8110. 3G is not important to me, I have my home computer with broadband for browsing the internet. And I hate Wifi because I don’t like to be tied down to somebodys router that (unless it sucks) you still have to pay for.

the imate 8502 has all the above features, but its ROM sucks in my opinion. The Samsung i780 has nearly all and is a fabulous phone. I used to be only a palm user, but boy have they fallen behind with this ‘me too’ device. its a shame as I think my old treos were still by far the easist devices to use.

nambi - The iMate 8502, the Palm 800, the HTC Touch Dual Pro all meet all the specs I posted. They all have the same shortcoming as well — not available today in the market. That was my point.

I would actually give up the built-in GPS and continue to use my BT GPS unit if I could buy something that met the other 4 specs today.

I’ll go ahead and correct myself….the iMate 8502 is available in the market. And I’m shocked that it looks un-brick-like…!

How’s the hardware in your opinion, specifically the narrow keyboard (narrow like a Centro according the spec dimensions)?

    Sure wish it had WM6.1.

I think the Treo 800w sets the new standard for other smartphones to try to equal. The critics seem to have it in for Palm for unstated emotional reasons rather than the features of the device. I have had a Treo 700p for several years, which I think was the best device at the time. I have looked at all the latest smartphones, and I haven’t seen any smartphone by any manufacturer that provides more functionality and more ease of use than the Treo 800w. It might not have a radically new look, but that is because radically new looks don’t make a device better functionally. The design of the Treo has been a great design and still is, as shown by all the imitators that use a similar layout. I don’t think the slide out or fold out smartphones are as good as a design for a business user.

An advanced, integrated OS-to-hardware user experience is the standard that Palm is blind toward. The benchmark is advanced intuitiveness without reliance upon 3rd parties to smooth out the most basic of wrinkles. If HTC can go the extra mile in the direction which is only a natural progression of sophistication, so can Palm. However, Palm, in their infinite arrogance, will die with their head in the sand (or elsewhere equally dark!)
