Apple US and UK online stores run out of iPhones

Would you just look at that? Both the U.S. and U.K. Apple stores now show "Currently Unavailable" for both the 8GB and 16GB iPhones. We don’t think Apple simply underestimated demand at this point — they’re up to something! But, it’s only May 10th, a full month ahead of a possible 3G iPhone release. Then again, you have to prepare people. They can’t just show up and say, "Hi. I’m the new 3G iPhone." Though Apple would love to do that, they need to give a bit of a heads up as they’re dealing with a different beast here — a cellphone. People have contracts with other carriers, etc. So, what’s the general consensus here? Did Apple just run dry, or are we a lot closer to heaven than we originally thought?

Thanks to Jose, E, and everyone else that hit us up!

P.S. It’s not just the online store that is out. We’ve been hearing that almost every Apple store is currently out of stock.

I think they’re just letting the 2.5G iPhones run their course. I wouldn’t be making a single more one of these if my 3G device were just around the corner.

Who’s to say they aren’t letting stock dwindle in order to have shelves cleared for a WES announce in a couple days? After the flack they took over replacing original 4/8 with 8/16, and the flack over the first price cut? Even if the 3G models aren’t on shelf for another month or two, there will be much knashing of teeth and bashing on blogs but the “faithful” will wait.

I bet ATT and Apple are going to make a 14 day gap so there are no chances of giving refunds. That was a catastrophy for both companies.

Well with the 3G’er round the bin and the Apps Store approaching. Also the on and off again AT&T “Free WiFi” @ all Starbucks here. I think this is going to be one hell of a summer for the Cellular world. VZW? Is that the biting of nails I hear?

If I were rich I’d hire a corporate spy to find out when the 3g will drop. I can’t take it anymore. I hate my phone, I hate my network. I must know when I get my hands on one of these!

Now if I am not mistaken, doesn’t shortages on items just increase the expected ship date? Usually when something is in high demand it will go from “ships in 24 hours” to “ships in 5-7 days” and so on. I don’t remember ever seeing a product on the Apple site just saying “unavailable”. Seems a bit strange to me

It usually takes about a month for a device to clear the FCC. As far as we all know, the 3G iPhone hasn’t been submitted yet. But it is possible that the FCC finally managed to keep a secret (very unlikely).

something tells me that getting our hopes up on this one is just going to make us even more disappointed when these come back in stock and the 3G device still doesn’t ship until the end of June. Here’s to hoping I am wrong though…!

Does anybody else think it’s a little weird that the iphone wasn’t 3g in the first place?
