BlackBerry launches TV ad campaign — finally!

You know how we always beat RIM over the head for not doing some mainstream advertising? We’re hearing they are going to start with their own ads (not carrier-sponsored) tonight. You can catch them all on NBC this evening. They will air (have already aired) on My Name is Earl, The Office, and 30 Rock. Anyone catch one of them yet?

I was watching the Office when it came on. I had the show TiVoed and actually stopped to see what the commercial was, I thought it might be one of those HP ads. I was impressed.

Uh did you see their financial results for last year? If the iPhone is hurting them I can’t even imagine how much profit they would’ve posted if it didn’t exist. Your fanboy armchair business analysis is adorable, though.

    J,

It’s not the quarter that RIM just posted that’s the issue, it’s the upcoming quarter. 5 major corporations announced recently that they are switching their entire fleet of phones from BB to iphones when the 2.0 version is released.

They want to improve their presence in the consumer world to help balance the losses they see coming in these corporations.

Although honestly, is 5 corpoarations worth a knee jerk reaction when you have tens of thousands?

RIM has been trying to edge into the consumer space since before anyone outside of Cupertino had even heard of the iPhone, so to say RIM is just starting to do this now because they’re afraid of iPhone in the enterprise is kind of silly.

I’ve not heard of the 5 major corporations that are switching but as you alluded in the last sentence of your comment, this is really not a big deal given RIM’s extensive enterprise customer base. For the majority of companies and governmental organizations, a switch from any smartphone to any other smartphone is a multi-million dollar investment. Apple needs to do a whole lot more than implement device side Exchange support to make any significant dent in RIM’s, or any other enterprise mobility provider’s, market share.

RIM doesn’t need these, everyone knows about blackberrys, and they already had an ad campaign.

Someone show me a samsung or nokia ad on cable. Apple ads got stale 3 years ago, I want them forced off the air by companies with more money and better hardware.

Problem is, *nobody* has more money than Apple. $40 billion on the balance sheet. That’s why they’re always being rumored to make a big acquisition.

    Rumor they’re buying Adobe.

    Rumor they’re buying Pixar.

    it never ends

I think you’re missing the point if you think these ads are aimed at corp types…
The real money is in the consumer space and RIM took a kick in the teeth from the iPhone’s release in the consumer space. These ads are targeting the non-smartphone user that looked at the iPhone ad and said “Cool I’ll get an iPhone, because nothing is cooler than that”.
RIM has never made a “sexy” product that consumers pine for. They’ve always made function over form, although lately with the leaks you could argue it’s going the other way.
Either way RIM has some comfort room in the enterprise markets, but in the consumer space they don’t. RIM on the whole needs to get moving along instead of making promises they obviously are not keeping (4.1SP5 anyone), and another WES and another introduction to Argon…

It might have been the ipod touch instead. Since they got the deal with Itunes, Apple products have been all over American Idol. All the contestants had touchs, and when it shows them using the computers, its always a mac.
