HTC Touch Diamond hands on

Thought we were done with HTC news for the day? Not a chance. After today’s press event we got a chance to spend a bit of quality time with HTC’s new Touch Diamond. While we were admittedly playing with a pre-production unit, we came away slightly…unimpressed. It’s a cool device to be sure, and the new TouchFLO 3D stuff looks great, but in practice, everything seemed to be moving about 3/4’s of a second behind each screen press. Slow motion was the name of the game. It’s thin, but not that thin, and did feel quite nice in the hand. That said, it’s not going to break any design records here. The most impressive part of the handset is, without question, the interface itself. The YouTube implementation is pretty impressive, and everything is really shiny, clear, and tastefully done. Let’s hope the laggyness was due to a non-final ROM. Hit the gallery for all the pics!

    Unfortunately, the laggyness is the same thing it’s always been: Windows Mobile.

    No, not a Microsoft hater here (or even WinMob for that matter), but that’s always been a feature of that OS and it will probably never change.

    What is with the HTC video on the YouTube photo. They want to sell handsets so badly they are willing to use porn? Anyone know the link to this?

    Sounds like a lack of video drivers is behind the lagginess.

    Doesn’t sound promising.

    Why put the phone out on the demo floor if it’s just going to piss people off?

    HTC updated the website.

    There WILL be a GSM 850/1800/1900 HSDPA 850/1900 version of the Diamond.

    If HTC does the no-driver dance again, I might just have to skip on Raphael.

    I’m getting tired of the wasted potential.

    I’m afraid this UI is too good to be topped by the Android Dream.

    i’m guessing the focus on the improved touch interface will be leveraged to sit on the android os too – which would be the efficient thing to do if you are htc.

    so, gradually the os sinks to the background, and the devices differntiate on capabilities and user experience. and speed. speed looks to be winmo’s achilles heel…

    @Reader,
    Um…idk if it was BGR or Engadget that wrote it but it does actually ave updated drivers.

    This seems to be riding along with the X1 platform type body styling. Not like I’m complaining, personally I think it is sexy as hell, just a little variation would be nice…ish.
