BlackBerry Javelin and BlackBerry Niagara explained!

There was a little bit of confusion with the 3G-less BlackBerry 9000 we posted. We heard two different codenames: Javelin and Niagara. Well, we were just told some more information on both devices. It seems the BlackBerry codenamed Niagara is actually an EV-DO device slated to hit Verizon in May of 2009. That seems a long way away but here are the specs on that model:
- "Large screen family"
- QWERTY keyboard
- 480×360 LCD
- EV-DO Rev. A
- aGPS
- 3.2 megapixel camera
- 4.7 OS platform
- BES 5.0 support (HTML email, etc)
- Qualcomm MSM7600 processor
That’s the Niagara. What about the BlackBerry Javelin? Well, here you go:
- QWERTY keyboard
- 480×360 LCD
- Quad-band GSM/EDGE
- GPS
- Wi-Fi
- 3.2 megapixel camera
- 4.6 OS platform
- BES 5.0 support as well
- ArgonV processor
Both devices look extremely similar in physical appearance, thus the confusion. So, look at that. You just got two devices for the price of one. Who’s out there in Verizon land and excited for this one? May of next year, though…doesn’t seem right does it? Then again, you never know with Big Red.

BGR, so since these models both have 3.2 mpx cameras, is the 9000 with 3g on GSM going to have a 3 mpx cam also?

May of 2009 doesn’t sound right to me.
Take just the camera’s pixels. Why even talk about 3.2mpx? That’ll be like Fred Flintstone come a year from now.

RIM evolves as fast as… Damn, I can’t even think of something that slow.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my Curve, but DAMN. They are slow.

rim is always spot on with their lackluster steps. same boring form factor over and over again. kickstart was finally a breath of fresh air to the blackberry line.
anyways a year from now. it takes a year from now to change the insides of a phone from gsm to cdma. thats pitiful. anyone else see palm 2 coming here?

No they won’t. They’ll be “Sprint Mobile” once they merge with T-Mobile and bring each other to crumbs.

I overheard a Verizon rep last week say he suspected they were phasing out the 8830, in favor of the Curve…could this actually be the 8830 replacement? Does it have GSM capability (the Curve doesnt…so I dont understand why they would phase out one of their only phones with international capacity…)

Your Verizon rep is on crack. They won’t phase out the 8830 for a camera-berry. What with the 8703 being phased out, lack of a non-camera berry would mena mass business customer defection.
What makes SENSE is this replacing the 8330 Curve in May 09. So now we know its run on VZW will be 1 year (and 3.2MP will be an improvement over Curve’s 2MP). Aweful long time to wait, but it obviously takes VZW at LEAST a year to approve a new device on their ‘open’ network.

The Blackberry 9000 is the next business phone from RIM. The Blackberry Niagara will support GSM Quadband, comes with a 2 megapixel camera, WiFi, A-GPS, 480 x 320 resolution display and microSD card slot.

That actually DOES sound right from big red. They have been a year or more late on most things. So why wouldn’t this be any different? You go with CDMA, you go with slow or crap device releases because world wide, nobody cares about CDMA.

Looks real nice and up to date! But for now, not a year from now! I’ll stick with my Curve for now with turtle edge! However I will make my way over to Nokia once the E71 drops. Now if that device has BB mail capability, well all I have to say is, hello my new phone!
