So you know how we’ve been talking about the BlackBerry 9000’s ridiculously high selling price? Well, it looks like RIM is gearing up to launch a 3G-less BlackBerry 9000 so to speak. It looks pretty similar but there are also a few changes to the design like a larger bezel around the front, and a whole different back case. Besides no 3G, we’d imagine the specs to be pretty similar to the BlackBerry 9000. Enjoy a larger-sized photo of this conceptual sketch after the jump!

Because most people live outside of a 3G coverage area and this will make it cheaper.

Probably for T-mobile. Who knows when they are ever going to get their 3G network fully going.

i am with ATT and where I live there is no 3G… Not everybody lives in a big city …. So is this gonna be cheaper…. Perfect… Blackberry email service is designed for GPRS… So EVDO, UMTS and so on is a bonus

This only seems to confirm for me that there will be two models of the iPhone come June. The fabled $199 will be 2.5G while the $399 and $499 price point will become 3G.

good selling point as many have jumped on the blackberry and now general smart phone ships.
to the poster near the top, how many people know what 3G implies for them is a better question.

The 3G-less device is aimed at the business user that must have the longer battery life (assuming the 3G-less will have the 9000’s larger battery) and targets a lower price point. Since 3G drains the battery quickly, biz users will not use a device that has to be charged every 2-4 hours. As a new device junkie and biz traveler, I am not going to pick up the 3G version of the 9000. Being tethered to a 3G device would be great for layovers at the airport but I cannot sacrifice RIM’s excellent battery life for speed. I would hate to be one of those guys always looking for outlets (holes ala Seinfeld).

Anyone have a guess at the price on this thing? I’m curious to learn how much extra the 3G chipset costs, also what else is in the 3G phone that ramps the cost. Thanks in advance.

I guess I can see the point of it from a business side when email and battery life are the 2 biggest factors. 3G would be less important to them……unless they travel to Korea and Japan, then it would be essential so they could finally travel with 1 phone. Choices…..

Becuase you will be able to get wifi and gps on one device. By your sugesstion you would need a bb curve 8310 and 8320.

I’m trying to ponder how a Canadian web site posting a leaked picture of a phone made in Ontario is an issue for the SEC?
If there was any harm done, it’s not evident in the shares of RIMM which trade on NASDAQ, they are at a new all time high today.
If some kid at RIMM sneaks into the toilet to take a picture of a new clamshell design, if BG didn’t post it, a dozen other sites would.
I think the SEC has it’s hands full chasing down insider-trading, rogues, sos-bandits and Arbs. People actually trading, manipulating, and profiteering.

Agreed! I have heard that the developers of the EDGE network (not AT&T by the way) are working on a software upgrade (remember that’s all EDGE was for GPRS) that will make EDGE faster. I am not suprised this hasn’t been mentioned as the only people that would benefit are the CUSTOMERS!
