T-Mobile looking to acquire Sprint?

This one will stay firmly in the rumor pile for the time being, but a report out of Germany points to an impending T-Mobile takeover of Sprint Wireless. On the surface, the move would make sense. T-Mobile has struggled to gain traction against its bigger competitors, with a sub-par coverage footprint and device selection that would make your grandmother laugh. Sprint, on the other hand, has been hemorrhaging absorbers and cash as of late, and seems to be stalling on their promised WiMAX 4G data rollout. Their powers combined might allow for greater success, but we do have our doubts. The two carriers operate on diametrically opposed frequencies and technologies, so marrying their coverage would be a nightmare. More importantly, however, would the combination of two troubled houses truly allow for success, or simply create a greater magnitude of trouble?

You honestly want verizon buying both the cheapest and fastest data providers in the country so they can cripple their networks and rip off their customers? I personally don’t.

Maybe this is the beginning of the American CDMA Sim Card or the R-UIM card. I am not sure if they have the same size specs or not. But maybe it is a possibly?

Each phone would have a Dual Sim Card. One GSM, one CDMA (R-UIM) and maybe that could get the job done without having to make some drastic change.

I don’t see where T-Mobile is in trouble, they just bought suncom to increase coverage, so they are moving forward, not back. Why does BG always bust on T-Mobile is my question!!!

It would make it the number one service provider in this country, which would be hilarious given the amount of disrespect this website and some of its visitors give it. However, the deal is, if beyond speculative talks, nowhere near an end in sight. First, there are huge legal ramifications for a foreign company owning that much American business, especially in telecommunications, not to mention the above problem of a CDMA/GSM conflict with product manufacturing, etc.

    I wish them luck, however.

How is T-Mobile troubled? As was mentioned they just acquired SunCom, increased coverage, surpassed 30 million customers, launched 3G, opening more retail locations. Hate, Hate, Hate, BGR is the one who is in trouble. How about report news and not just your biased opinions. Hemorrhaging credibility post by post!

Puleeze! T-Mobile in trouble? I happen to love my T-Mobile service! I’ve been a happy customer of that TERRIFIC company for more than three years and I have NO intentions of switching! I agree with kchino above me when I say: Stop being biased and post some facts! That’s what a REAL telecommunications website would do!

We have seen what happens when two competing technologies are slammed together as a result of a merger. Sprint went from darling of the industry to an eye sore. The stock holders and/or board of Deutsche Telecom would never let the buyout/merger happen. Perhaps T-Mob buys some tower space at dirt cheap prices?

Joshua: T-Mobile doesn’t gain traction on the larger cellcos in terms of customer base due to lack of any huge acquisitions. They aren’t doing poorly at all however and are actually the fastest growing carrier when broken down by scale.

AT&T Mobility would not be the AT&T it is today on new organic growth alone. The former Cingular had to buy the old ATTWS and in the process gained 20+ million subs overnight.

I thought even you would know that?

    “Two Troubled Houses” ?????

What is that all about? Unless you mean Sprint and Nextel, I don’t know what you are getting at here. Since when did T-Mobile become “troubled”?

Does T-Mobile actually gain customers? I don’t see why anyone would consider T-Mobile unless their friends were already on it.

Oh, and spare me your anecdotes of excellent customer service.

This merger makes a ton of sense. T-Mobile has the customer service, GSM technology, and price plans. Sprint has the Multimedia (TV, Music Store, and handsets). Each complements the others weaknesses. Moreover, they would probably discontinue Iden, and convert from CDMA back to GSM as Verizon will be doing. As for T-Mobile being troubled: Hogwash! I work for T-Mobile and that is utter nonsense from the BG boys.

It doesn’t have to be them merging like Nextel and Sprint did. It could simply be DT buying Sprint so that TMO could use Sprint’s spectrum and any other assets it desired. TMO and Sprint could still remain separate, but allow customer’s to switch to the other without an ETF. They could even keep the sales and everything separate until they found a way to combine technologies at a way later date.

Damn, TMO customers are so sensitive, you would think they all have a personal stake in the company. Right now TMO is second best to ATT as far as coverage, that is fact. Sprint is second best to Verizon. Sprint miscalculated snapping up Nextel, and basically screwed Nextel up in the process along with themselves. Call it what you want, but Nextel customers were very loyal, and thats why Sprint thought they wanted them. Truth be told Sprint has a bad habit of making people leave.

Tmo buying Sprint, I doubt it. I would think at this point you would have a better chance of Sprint just committing business suicide and closing its doors.
