BlackBerry KickStart: T-Mobile launch and a whole bunch of specs!

You didn’t think we’d actually leave you hangin’, did you? To follow up on on yesterday’s post of the BlackBerry KickStart photos, we’ve got here a couple more images of the phone with T-Mobile branding and some interesting details on the physical design attributes. It looks like the screen is monochromatic with a color glow. Whatever that means. We’re imagining the border around the screen to possibly "glow" different colors and when the outer display is off, it’s invisible. You just see the shiny black face. There’s a whole bunch of colors set to launch with the KickStart and they’ll be anodized. Additionally, the back battery cover will either be a soft-touch rubberized finish, or a low gloss finish. We’d imagine some sort of customization opportunities for the end user with the low gloss finish. Perhaps you could get the battery cover with personalized images and things. Sounds fun. Ready for the hard specaroonies? Who are we kidding — you know you are!

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
  • "Next Gen" SureType keyboard
  • 2 Megapixel camera
  • 16-bit color LCDs
  • Internal LCD is 240×320, external one is 160×128
  • Wi-Fi b,g
  • 3.5mm headset jack
  • OS is 4.6

We’re not going to flat out call it, but look for a release around September on T-Mobile! Hit the jump for the rest of the shots!

This handset will solidify RIM in the consumer space. For me, I’ll wait until Curve 2.0.

I wouldn’t mind a flip for the weekends. Curve for the week, and flip for the weekend. Less bulk, same performance, same access to everything. If this has the same functionality as all blackberries than it will be a hit with the younger crowd who wouldn’t mind a BB but dont want the bulk of a qwerty phone and don’t like the pearl.

And I don’t know what you guys are trippin on, TMO coverage is great in my city. 5 bars everywhere and at least 2 or 3 inside of pretty much any building. Can’t say the same for any other carrier.

Its WIFi so coverage bonus with WIFI networks! TMO coverage is as good as everyone else as they have roaming agreements with the other carriers in area they don’t have towers! Phone itself look interesting, but not a business phone

i wonder what their inside guys think the cannibalization rate will be between pearl (next pearl) and this one. They are bound to hurt each other to an extent.

Will T-Mobile ever manage to sway their haters, this company is going to launch something different and you still get people bitchin and moaning. Give T-Mobile a break they are starting to improve on some of their problems.

I am not sure why people are going gaga over a flip phone. Size-wise it looks the same if not larger than the Pearl. The Pearl line is sexier and has an a microSD slot somewhere on it. Flip phones are so early 2000s. Look at most of the new smartphones coming they are either sliders or the shape of the Blackberry, iPhone, etc. Whats so great about a flip phone?

Its Tmobile of course no 3G! Well, to be fair they are rolling out a 3G network … based on 3G technology nobody wants (UMTS) and is only a hair faster than EDGE anyways. Anyways, its going to take a while for Tmobile to get their “only slightly faster than EDGE” supposed 3G network up anyways. Tmobile doesn’t even have the money to roll out good 3G! Whats up with that?

Who are all these people that think TMOB has poor coverage. I read Consumer Reports and they rank them just below Verizon and way above Att & Sprint nationwide. READ people. It has been a while since they tired the servcie. They also have 3G in some markets now and all by end of year. They seem to be a pretty solid
player latley. They won the best business solution as well in 2007.
The phone…..It’s a BB. They all work great for business.

@Judge Roy Bean - No they have not been a solid player. They are rolling out 3G, but they are saving money by rolling out a 3G network that nobody wants and carriers are switching FROM. They are using UMTS, which is only a smidge faster than EDGE anyways. I was thinking about switching BACK to Tmobile until I heard about the 3G technology type, then I realized that even after their rollout they will still be the slowest carrier when it comes to data. I love Tmobile, but I must have 3G data on the go for work reasons. Unless they actually stop being cheap and roll out some fast 3G, they will not catch up to the other guys for business users.

I agree with Marco who cares what cell phone company you have everyone still has to pay monthly fees and we are all strapped to one or two year contracts. Edge or 3g I could give a crap, I have had contracts with all the top four cell phone companies in the United States. If I see a phone I like I switch over and pay early termination fees or stay with two phones. To put down someones choice of cell phone carrier is pretty immature and idiotic take it from me every company has it’s flaws.

As a former T-Mobile employee I find it amusing to continue to hear the whines and gripes of some of the folks here. If you dont like what T-Mobile offers then get another service. Let me give you guys a hint: T-Mobile decided a long time ago that you guys that want ultra-fast you-tube and streaming episodes of “Heroes” aren’t really that profitable. There are more people who just want a phone service to talk and text than you guys. So you know what? Why not just concentrate on what actually makes the company money. That’s why the Kickstart and new Sidekicks will do well. They are made for people who are completely satisfied with what the phones have to offer.

Preach on it, Bigsmooth. This is phenomenal for Blackberry, it shows versatility and will reach a different market (any good company cares more about broadening their bottom line by adding breadth to their consumer base). Don’t like it? Don’t buy it! No one’s forcing you into a contract with T-Mobile or with Blackberry. That’s the beauty of a free market economy.

I can’t tell you how much I would love a Blackberry slider. Maybe in X1 Style or Tilt style… Either way, it would be amazing, bigger screen and bigger keys.

The comments seem like a religious debate on form factors. While BB’s to date have been various forms of candy bars (including the old pager style for which I was a beta tester), go into any store and you find lots of flip phones of all sizes and types that sell very well. So why not offer the flip for the people who want to put it in their pockets and not worry about keys being depressed accidentally. I applaud RIM for doing this. It seems very disappointing that this is still an EDGE device (I graduated to the EV-DO Pearl on VZW and it is noticably faster on non-EMail tasks). But there are a lot of happy Pearl users still on EDGE that now have another form factor option. BRAVO RIM for giving the consumer a choice.
