Canada set to get Nokia N95 and iPhone by the Summer?

If these reports pan out, we could have a lot of happy Canadians on our hands by the end of the summer. According to two separate reports, both the iPhone and the Nokia N95 could be hitting Canadian soil by summertime. The Toronto Star seems to have it on good authority that the iPhone will be coming to Rogers in time for an upcoming promotional campaign including the LG Vu and HTC Touch. Notice a theme? The promo campaign is supposed to begin sometime between late May and early June. Could this all be timed to coincide with the next gen iPhone launch? Time will tell. On the N95 front, rumors point to a May 2nd release for the high-end handset.  If true, Rogers will be launching the N95 for $699 retail, with subsidies expected for new contracts. As always, these are rumors, but it’s high time both handsets were made official up North, so we wouldn’t be shocked to see at least one of these pan out.

Is that a joke? Canada didn’t have these phones (The Touch, iPhone, N95) ALL THAT TIME??

is it gonna be an iPhone 3G or the old one? Does Canada even have 3G? Unbelievable.

Canada DOES have the touch and has had it for quite some time… But yeah no iphone or N95 but to be honest you can just buy unlocked ones and use them anyways… Which is what most ppl do..

    1 GSM provider does suck.

    @ TareX

Canada has 3G and all providers have the Touch.

As for the iPhone and N95, you must buy those from cell phone stores and dealerships as unlocked devices.

Did you know that our 3G is better than that of the US? In fact, we have it on both 850 and 1900 band. And it’s 7.2 mpbs.

Well, if you’ll remember, rumor had it that T-Mobile may be coming to Canada. They did register their name with the government, which hints at something.

Damn I wish Telus would get on the band wagon and get some decent phones. Rogers is just over taking them by a mile and Telus does nothing.

yes Canada has GSM and yes we have G3. We also have extrodinarily high data rates and no unlimited data plans. unless that changes the uptake of the iphone will be minimal.

The real reason the iphone isn’t already available is there is a legal dispute over the name “iphone” a company here in toronto (comwave) registered the name before apple. they sell a VOIP product called the comwave iphone, so apple can’t legally use the name here in canada.

until the trademark dispute is settled there won’t be an apple iphone in canada. Currently both companies have until june to make their case ( either company could extend that dealine by 4 months by requesting it ) In all likelyhood comwave will drag this out until apple pays them off.

N95 is coming for sure. 8GB, HSPA and will likely be a Vision phone.

The iPhone rumor may actually have some merit as I have just received Comwave’s latest mail out and it mysteriously lacks mention of their iPhone. Every mail out I have received from them previously has had big ads on the iPhone. Maybe just a coincidence, as it is still listed on their website. Lets hope not though.

The iPhone didn’t come to Canada because of Comwave having the name.
The dispute was between Apple and Rogers as for the fact that Apple wants revenue sharing + profit from every phone sold. Rogers was not will to give Apple that, also for the fact that Rogers is trying to push 3G (”Vision”), and Apple has yet to produce a 3G iPhone.

The N95 is a monster of a phone. I have the iPhone now (1.1.4 unlocked), its a great phone but I can’t wait until i can actually hold an N95 in my hands… it really boils down to data rates, and features. N95, iPhone V2 or Blackberry 9xxx are the only devices I’m looking forward to seeing.

Canada has 3G since mid-2007. It was slow then but as mentioned above it is already capable of 7.2mbps.

The are. They started putting GSM radios in the Vancouver area but it will only be used for ROAMING for other phones but Fido/Robers. Basically, it’s a very small slice of spectrum to be used by tourists visiting Vancouver for the next winter olympics in 2010.

I’m surprised BGR has not reported on this already..

T-Mobile was part of the Niagara Networks group that was slated to bid for the upcoming spectrum auction. T-Mo pulled out of the consortium and the rest of the investors followed suit thereby ending the Niagara Networks plan for spectrum auction participation.
So T-Mo is not coming to Canada any time soon due to that and current foreign ownership rules. That could change in a few years when the 700 mhz auction happens in Canada.

@ Adi, CRTC and Rogers would have a significant amount to say if T-Mo was placing towers on Canadian soil. What is more likely, they could place towers on the border with a strong signal into Canada and hope to provide native network traffic access that way.

As for the N95 and iPhone rumors. Boy Genius is currently half right. One will be coming.

@ Max, Your question regarding TM and GSM, it will probably be announced in the near future. Stay tuned. Bell will probably follow with a similar announcement if not at the same time.
Goint to be some interesting times.

    @bob

I was referring to Telus. I have reliable inside information that they have already started converting towers in the Vancouver area to GSM radios in order to have a hybrid GSM/CDMA network for the 2010 olympic games.

Agains, this is from a RELIABLE source from inside Telus.

No idea what Bell has in mind in regards to GSM conversion plans.

Rogers WILL have the Iphone before the end of May. I will have one in my hot little hands within the next 3 or 4 weeks and yes, it is going to be 3G. I can’t and won’t elaborate on how I know these things but you can take it to the bank that I wouldn’t bother posting this if it wasn’t true. Data plans have been worked out and we will have a service for Iphone much like the plans in the USA. This is going to be big when it drops in the next couple of weeks!
