Microsoft open to keeping XP around just a bit longer than expected
Steve Ballmer is full of quotables these days. Never one to shy away from saying something he might regret later, the Microsoft CEO went on record this morning, saying that Microsoft would be open to keeping the operating system on sale past the planned June kill date. If Microsoft truly listened to customer demand, the company would have stopped selling Vista months ago, and re-elevated XP to flagship status. Then again, a little concession isn’t bad. No word on just what qualifies as "sufficient" customer demand. In Vista’s defense, Ballmer goes on to say that "most people who buy PCs today buy them with Vista. That’s the statistical truth," Sure, but when was the last time you walked into your local Big Box retailer to find XP as an option? Yeah, we thought so.

get off your high horse.
Vista isn’t that bad. Have you tried it with sp1?
It is time they bury xp into the ground.
I loaded two identical machines the other day with xp pro sp3 and vista sp1. Hate to brake it to you but vista was faster, more secure and more stable.
The only real issue I see was that microsoft released an os faster then the hardware that could support it.
Now that the market is now flooded with adequate hardware the computing experience has changed drastically.
I can’t remember the last time an application crashed or hung my vista machines..

I recently got a Sony VAIO SZ that came with Vista and had a XP downgrade disc. And much to my surprise, I did not want to give up Vista. I have been using it for a year and have gotten used to it and its quirks. I like the search (sure you can use google desktop, but i like that it is integrated).
I do use XP machines as well and I feel that I have an easier time navigating in Vista than XP - less no. of clicks.

I just purchased a dell vostro 1500 and had XP preinstalled. however your right someone can not go into a bestbuy, curcuitcity or any retail chain and ask for a preconfigures machine with xp.

I agree with that last comment - It is impossible to go into stores and buy a pre-configured machine with XP. What they should do is survey all of the online direct-order companies (Dell, HP, Systemax, etc.) and aknowledge the truth that customers are really still asking for XP. The Dell service reps even suggest going with XP for business and some home applications. I just ordered 20 Opti’s with “Genuine Windows Vista® Business Downgrade, XP Pro Installed, English add $0″ just to hedge the bet.

Stop selling Vista and revert back to XP?
I would of never bought a new computer if that was the case.
If I were you and you REALLY wanted XP then stop complaining and just go the distance with formatting your hard drive and installing XP your self.

Of course you can’t walk into a store and by a new computer with Windows XP. Nor can you walk into an Apple store and buy a computer with OSX 10.0 installed. What’s your point?
As someone said earlier, get off your high horse. Vista isn’t as bad you proclaim it to be. It’s just different. I’m running it on a Celeron cpu with 2g ram. It’s a little slow, which I expected, but I’ve not had any issues with it since switching to Vista a year ago.

Yeah here we go again. Abother vista bashing session. The short and simple truth of the matter is this: if you have problems with vista than your an idiot. My grandmother uses and loves vista….no shit she really does….so you should be ashamed of yourself if you can’t
I know, your going to tell me your an IT professional and have been doing to for a thousand years and you invented c++ and html and that qualifies you to say vista sucks. Well I say to you don’t waste your time with that BS because that’s all it is and that’s all you are.

All I know is that vista recycled my recycle bin…how? I don’t know. That was the moment I said screw this apple here I come. Now I run mac leopard and xp sp2 on bootcamp and I couldn’t be happier.
SCREW VISTA!

All I see here is a bunch people saying well Vista isn’t that bad, I’ve gotten used to it yaddy, yaddy, yada…just sounds like you all have been institutionalized or something. Is Vista getting better though? Probably…the fact of the matter is they wouldn’t keep leaving XP around if there wasn’t a demand for it still. My next computer will be a MAC and until MSFT shows they really care about making an OS friendlier and innovative for “EVERYONE” to use, Apple is getting my money on the next purchase.

why would anyone in their right mind want to purchase a brand new computer if it is still offering the same operating system.
that’s like buying a 2007 camry and then going and buying a 2009 camry the same exact car. it makes no sense unless your going to buy the new model that has some changes.

vista may be faster in some cases but the issue I have isself comptability with the software I use. My main work is electronics design and embedded software and none of the software I use will run under Vista. if it did I would switch to it but until then XP Pro us ideal for me.

Vista is crap. MS is all but admitting it. Why can’t you guys who are blathering on about how stable, fast and secure your machine is with it? This isn’t just coming from an Apple fan, I’ve heard this repeated continually from all of my extremely loyal MS friends. Vista isn’t even allowed on our network. If you call us IT people whiners, just consider that we are the ones who have to constantly clean up after Microsoft’s messy patches, updates, and upgrades.
The reason that you can’t go into an Apple Store and by a new system with v. 10 on it is because 10.5 is a true upgrade improvement over the previous system. Vista is an abortion.
The only good thing about Vista is that it was the final straw for many users I know to switch to Mac.

That pic is indeed awesome - it looks like Ballmer is about to give oral pleasure to somebody. Steve Jobs, perhaps?

That’s not quite the best analogy. There is more to a computer beyond an OS: cpu, memory, gfx cards, etc.
I think Vista is fine. My biggest drivers/constraints would be 1) gaming in vista 2)new apps that are vista-only

Funny you say MS admits it. I hear this a lot. Please show the site where this is posted. I’ll love to see them dog the one thing they are trying to sell. As for those who have not use Vista. You can not bash something you haven’t used. I am open to trying new thing and tried Vista when it was slow and incompatible with everything. I simply stop using it until the hard and software caught up. It flies with virtually no issues at all. Only complaint is I wish there was more 64 bit software I could use to take advantage of that technology. BTW if you use a mac ” and most people will agree with me” You hate windows.. period.. Not because it don’t work for you cause you don’t understand it. I use to work with both and it was very frustrating but now they are comparable. More bug as going to be on a OS that sales more than one that doesn’t… it’s not a war between us and who has a better OS but giving credit where credit is to and good job to MS for making a few good systems in a row.
