Skype releases beta software mass-market handsets

Skyping from your lowly non-Windows Mobile phone just got a lot easier. Skype has just released an official mobile client that supports supporting over 50 handsets. Specific phone models aren’t listed, but the press release promised support for phones from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson. Not bad at all. The new software reportedly allows for free Skype-to-Skype calls, and allows you to utilize Skype-out for all of your landline needs. We haven’t had a chance to test it out just yet, but we’re assuming that you’ll need either Wi-Fi or a 3G connection to carry on an intelligible conversation.

Wohoo… a good step forward. Hopefully more phones will be supported, particularly on UIQ. Until then I will use Fring.

Skype is the future! Carrier’s revenues will soon be limited to selling high speed data plans– no more monthly cell phone bills! Just a Skype Out plan and that’s it. Now THAT’S what I’m talking about.

I use iSkoot on my e61i to make SkypeOut calls. Works great and seems to be a lot lower overhead (less bloated) software than fring. Plus it doesn’t require me to have a WiFi connection going. iSkoot has a blackberry client as well, but I’ve never tried it.

@john - IM+ apparently works on blackberry… not sure what the performance is like but there is a 7 day trial.
